I don’t think that going from a 5D to a 7D is an upgrade.

The list of things that are better in the 7D is a lot longer than the list of things that are better in the 5D. :)
To some that single advantage the 5D holds over the 7D is significant, to others it isn’t.

the most important thing to keep in mind is, the 7D is a 1.6x crop sensor, while the 5D is full frame.
so if you “upgrade” (not really an upgrade, more of a switch) to the 7D you will need to get different lenses in order to keep the same focal lengths that you had with the 5D.

One feature that I’ve found is the “Quiet Shutter” option.. Might come in handy with wildlife

“Quiet Shutter”? This camera is SOLD if this is true… I shoot theater performances, and people are always looking over at me when I take pictures because my 40D sounds like a rifle…

Please give us some crop examples of image parts at center and border taken with the new lenses with at 18mm,22mm,31mm,53mm,85mm,135mm or 15mm,17.5mm,22mm,31mm,53mm,85mm . Unfortunetly Canon shows us only two MTF-charts with a lines-per-mm scale not reflecting 18MP of a crop sensor.
With lenses are available yet?

Please let us know how it stacks up against the D300s…I myself currently own a Canon XTi (400D), and was positively set on jumping boat over to Nikon before I heard of the 7D. Now I’m really stuck on the fence. I wanted to switch due to Canon’s lack of a capable opponent in rivaling Nikon’s (previously?) superior semi-pro cropped sensor lineup…the 50D was no match for D300, much less D300s…but now the 7D has changed everything.
I really can’t decide on this one. Could anyone offer some opinions, as non-biased as possible? (Of course, I accept the fact that I am posting on a Canon rumors site…)
Oh, and how sturdy is the build quality/feel stack up to Nikon this time around?
Thanks in advance!

We must wait until the first reviews are published
The sensor will require L lenses to deliver the most of its capabilities
Bad lenses or entry level lenses are not for this camera

Bad lenses or entry level lenses are not for ANY halfway-decent DSLR. Even Rebels benefit from top-quality glass.

I have had the same thoughts…switching from my old Digital Rebel/300D to Nikon. The info. I read/samples I saw from the 50D did not get me into the store to buy one. I considered the 40D but am interested in the video option. I am probably going to wait to see what the 60D brings because I do want the basic modes so my wife can use the camera too. I assume/hope some of he new technology trickles to the 60D. Plus, the 60D will probably be $400-600$ cheaper.

Cr guy!
Could you test it’s dynamic range?
My biggest problem with the 50D was the lack of dynamic range compared to older, bigger pixel sized cameras…
Like RAW headroom…
It would be great to see if there is any improvement about this, I’m sure the other features work just as fine as advertised. Or not? :)

tell us you’re joking. really.
the only two things that can possibly MAKE you take better photos are:
1. your own motivation
2. someone threatening you with bodily harm
both have worked for me

That’s not a difficult test.. Even my 50D could do that.
I’m more interested to see the performance when trying to capture a smaller, faster bird against a busy background (i.e trees).

My 7D Just arrived from Amazon.com via UPS (I’m in Southern NJ).
Body Only was ordered on the Sept 2nd, and I’m a Prime Member for the $3.99 one day shipping option. My Charge Card showed the hit :-) Monday Morning, so I knew it was coming.
Also you should know I was in a local Mall here in South Jersey today, and the Ritz Camera Store had 20!!!! in stock. I would have bought one right away, but I had mine on the way from Amazon.com already!
Now what’s really funny, i walk right out of the store and call them at that exact Ritz Store! I’m told on the phone there is “NONE in stock” at all until the end of October into November. Sounds fishy to you? Here is what i was told when I confronted them while I was still on the phone walking back into the store. “The 7D’s they have arre ONLY for the walk in customers, period!” I felt like I was an undercover 6 ABC News Reporter or something. I think the Manager almost pooped himself when he saw me walk in holding and talking on the phone to him. I wish i had a film crew with me to catch the look on his face!
We’re all still laughing here at the office about it.

I cannot under stand how I entered my CCV wrong when the transaction was accepted when I pre-ordered the camera.
well, Good things happen for those who wait (or so they say). Beside I’m not going to use the 7d for anything soon anyway (My first photo shoot with it will be in F1 race in Abu Dhabi).

apreantly the first patch in adorama was sold out, and I didn’t get mine because of the “payment issue” I believe that the payment issue was a cover for not getting me my camera. I still cannot understand how the CVV can change. I’ve also been waiting for their response for 12 hours. nothing yet.
