Looks like a solid camera to me on the image quality side.

I have read some folks that think it’s a bit too “plasticy”. We’ll see when we get our grubby hands on it.

RAW Video for 5D2 & 7D?

September 18th, 2009 | 71 Comments | Posted in Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 7D, Canon Video

From Redusers
A little birdy just whispered something pretty remarkable into my ear. I cannot verify this AT ALL but rumor has it that Canon may be prepping to unveil a RAW or sRAW recording module for the 5D2, 7D, etc, which would record possibly via the CF card slot. Apparently they are being tested and used now.

Will post more details later if I get any. Don’t know about framerates or RAW vs sRAW. And again, this is totally unconfirmed, from a single “high-placed” source.”

From The Archive

Far Fetched Stuff?
I received many rumors that never appear on this site, I try to filter them a bit. However, times are slow right now. So here are a few I’ve received over the last month or so.

This post really is for entertainment value…….. for now. :)

EF f/2 Zoom
Canon is working on f/2 zoom to add to the lineup. Focal range of 24-60.

EOS 3D
We’ll see a 3D in the spring of 2010. It’ll basically be a 7D with a full frame sensor.

Full Line of EF-S Primes
Canon will release a full line of EF-S prime lenses on 2010.

Mirrorless Rebel
A mirrorless Rebel is closer than anyone thinks. We could see them for Christmas of 2010. The camera will be smaller and have an OLED viewfinder.

I’ll repeat it. I dub these CR0 rumors for the time being. I get a lot of wishlists. That being said, I felt the same way about my first 7D information back in January.

Goodnight.

*UPDATE* Canon Patents

September 17th, 2009 | 55 Comments | Posted in Canon General

UPDATE
Aren’t patents fun? One thing I hate about patents is I can’t read them. I read through the 4 of these and still had no idea what they were.

One of our commenters did however.

“The first patent is describing a read out shift which only is useful in video recording. The patents 2 and 3 rely on the optical IS element doing the dirty work and the third describes a way of moving the relevant lens elements in an IS lens. So nothing, as in not a single thing, is implicating more than the presence of sensors that detect motion inside the body – the chore of correcting for that motion falls to the IS group.”

So there you have it. Thanks Karl. I love when these things are explained in english.

Canon is apparently top 5 every year for patents awarded. They were #2 in 2005 behind Big Blue.

In Body & In Lens Stabilization Patents
I haven’t had any time to read through these patents thoroughly, I only have my phone. However, I’m told the following 4 patents may be of great interest to Canon users.

New York Loves Canon

September 16th, 2009 | 14 Comments | Posted in Canon General

New York and Canon sitting in a tree…………

Text from PDN

Canon U.S.A. persuaded the state of New York to spend $8 million in taxpayer money to widen a road that will lead to its new headquarters.

About 1,200 people work at Canon’s current U.S. headquarters in Lake Success, Long Island. The imaging company plans to open a bigger office, which will eventually employ 2,000 people, in Melville, further out on the island.

Politicians were desperate to keep Canon from fleeing to New Jersey. As part of a deal to keep Canon in the area, the New York State Department of Transportation agreed to add one lane each to the service roads between exits 48 and 49 off the Long Island Expressway. Canon will also take advantage of some state and local tax breaks.

1D News From The Netherlands

September 16th, 2009 | 32 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4

From an email
“A sports shooter in the Netherlands told me that his agency has tested a new camera for Canon. It was still in a Mark III housing, but the inside was changed. Next week canon will send him two updates of the camera and a 7D.”

Lots of reports of 1D testing going on like gangbusters. Still looks like a 2010 announcement.

Official Canon Survey
Canon has sent invites to folks to participate in a survey geared towards video in SLR’s.

Survey Here: http://survey.cusa.canon.com/Pub/2wS26J/Link.html

The survey is only for US residents. You can tell a fib and answer “yes” to that question.

It’s nice to see Canon asking for feedback from the users.

7D Field Reviews

September 15th, 2009 | 124 Comments | Posted in Canon 7D

From Naturfokus
A new review of the 7D has popped up at Naturfokus.

Summary
“Canon 7D combine very good image quality with a fast and accurate AF-system. I think this will be a popular camera for shooting action. The camera is in many ways closer to the 1D Mark III camera, rather than the 5D Mark II, and a good step over the Canon 50D. I think many photo enthusiasts and pros will acquire the 7D camera. In my case, this will be the first 1.6 crop factor camera, I will bring in my photo bag on assignments and expeditions.”

From Jeff Ascough (My favourite wedding photographer)
Jeff had a 7D and has apparently fallen in love. Yes, he’s a Canon ambassador so he may be biased. :)

Summary
“It can be hard to deduce any conclusion from a bunch of low resolution jpegs on a blog, but this camera will be my main street/travel camera, there is no doubt about that. It produces lovely, very film like files, with loads of detail and tonal range; I just love the ‘feel’ of the files at 1600 iso – they make me feel nostalgic!!

Zeiss Distagon T* 3,5/18 ZE

September 14th, 2009 | 45 Comments | Posted in Third Party Lenses

Carl Zeiss presents the Distagon T* 3,5/18 wide-angle lens with EF bayonet mount
OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 14.09.2009.
Whether shooting the elegant lines of the Eiffel Tower or the vast expanses of the Grand Canyon, both situations require a lens field wide enough to reveal the unique and full dimensions of each image. With the new Distagon T* 3,5/18 from Carl Zeiss, EOS camera users now have an ultra-wide-angle lens at their disposal while benefiting from all the other optical qualities that ZEISS lenses are well-known for. The lens’s extremely wide 99°-angle view is suitable especially for full-frame sensor cameras, delivering an array of new creative possibilities. From landscape and architecture photography to advertising images, cameras equipped with the new Carl Zeiss wide-angle lens meticulously capture once-only moments and spectacular perspectives.

Despite its short focal length, the Distagon T* 3,5/18 ZE has an extremely compact design compared to other zoom lenses in its category. Internal focusing also helps to reduce its size while delivering extremely precise and smooth focus control.

To prevent image aberrations during close-ups, internal lens groups are repositioned individually during focusing in what is called a floating elements design. This allows the Distagon T* 3,5/18 ZE to deliver exceptionally high quality—from extreme close-ups to infinity. Thanks to the ZEISS T*s anti-reflective coating and meticulously crafted lenses, the ZEISS T* is not affected by reflections or stray light. The result: razor-sharp images even under the toughest lighting conditions or with wide aperture settings.

Following the Planar T* 1,4/50 ZE and 1,4/85 ZE, already long cherished by photographers around the world, the Distagon T* 3,5/18 ZE is the first wide-range lens with EF bayonet mount on the market.

The Distagon T* 3,5/18 ZE will be available in autumn 2009 at a suggested retail price of EUR 1,049.00 (excluding VAT)*.

Rebel XS/1000D
The Rebel XS has been removed from the Vistek web site.

A local store has had the camera on “eternal backorder”.

The camera is still appearing on Canon price lists in the US and Canada.

EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS
Canon Canada recently started instant rebates on select lenses. The 70-200 f/2.8L IS was originally part of the rebate program and has since been removed in favor of the 70-200 f/4L IS.

If you see any current Canon literature on the rebate program (I can’t find it on the web), you’ll see the 70-200 f/2.8L IS still appears on some of the literature in background images and the image for the 70-200 f/4L IS is different than the rest of the lenses on the rebate amount lines.

Canon Canada late to know something? Wouldn’t be the first time.

I’ll post pics of this tomorrow, I don’t have the literature handy.

Could be nothing…

Price Watch EOS
I have updated the Price Watch EOS page. It now includes the 7D. I have removed the 40D and G10 from the page.

1D Mark IV Release Date [CR1]

September 11th, 2009 | 214 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4

Not in 2009
Received an email saying we wouldn’t see the new 1D4 until the new year.

Canon will announce the camera shortly after the 2010 Olympics. This would put the announcement into the first week of march.

The games will be used as the final testing of the camera. It’s apparently going to be quite vigorous. It’s Canon’s hope to have the camera in the hands of photographers for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

CR’s Take
This sounds plausible. Having a world class sporting event in the winter to test the camera sounds like a great idea. The World Cup is the bigger event.

Announcement Teaser?

September 9th, 2009 | 492 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4

UPDATE
It has been pointed out that the people involved in the presentation are in fact from Canon Business Solutions. This makes the chance of it being an EOS product remote. CBS does handle printers though, there could be something new there for the photographer.
