Why this? The existing 50/1.4 is sharp, has low PFs / CAs, and a fast autofocus. What do you miss?

    1. Imprioved optical performance wide open (up to f/2.0). center and even more so borders. Less lateral CAs and even worse Bokef CA – meaning “digital grade” coating of rear lens and inner lenses, preferably using the sub-light-wavelength nano-stuff. It needs to be redone from scratch – widebody design instead of “film-days 50″. Exactly like the Sigma and Nikon AF-S please.

I really hope this is a smokescreen for their announcement of a new 24-70 f/2 and 70-200 f/2.8 MKII.

Does anyone know anything about the new EF-S lenses they announced with the 7D?

Wow…what a disappointment. Canon has a huge press release to say they’re working on stuff. I hope they don’t come out with a new 24-70/70-200. I just bought those two lenses…

    Nick Reply:

Don’t worry. a 24-70 with IS would not only be heavier but cost much more than it’s current version.

As for the 70-200, It’s such a great lense, even if a new one comes out I don’t see how you should even remotly regret your purchase. I bought a 70-200 2.8 IS last month and it’s simply stunning.

I just bought these 2 lens too over the summer due to the canon instant rebates… man… that would suck if they came out with MKII of both lens.. oh well… what more can they improve on the 70-200 IS 2.8? As for the 24-70 i know they can add IS.. but thats pretty much it…

    joe banana Reply:

    >> what more can they improve on the 70-200 IS 2.8?

how about optical performance to match 70-200/4 L IS @ f4 (!) not to mention achieve the same performance @ f 2.8

and how about a current 4+ stop IS (as in 70-200 4 L IS)

  16. dwight Says:

I was really holding my breath for something cool… like a 1DmkV. They could just skip the mkIV and give us a V with 25mp sensor like the 5DMKII with 15fps, waterproof body, inbody IS that could work in tandem with IS lenses to give SUPER IS that could somehow predict the moving subject and compensate for it like panning. Now that would be cool!

If this is one of Canon’s largest and most important launches in the company’s history, I don’t want to hear about any Canon “regular” announcements… The thrill of this historical launch is more than I can handle!

  20. kubelik Says:

I’m amazed how many people are expressing disappointment in Canon for not living up to the hype when the only ones hyping it up was the rumors community.

most of the dedicated Canon watchers here all made notes and comments that it was highly unlikely that this announcement had anything remotely to do with photography or video.

I’ve never understood, and still don’t, the sense of entitlement and surety that EVERY rumor must lead to something, and EVERY press conference must be photo related.

    John Wasn Reply:

Well, you have to admit that for “one of Canon’s largest and most important launches in the company’s history” (quoting the announcement), it’s kind of a let-down, yes?

    Reply

    Ziggy Reply:

in what I have to do, the 7D is worthless, sorry and the Mark 3 is like Tylenol in the 80s. And it was their words, “Canon will make one of its largest and most important launches in the company’s history” If this is it, then they are talking the business side and not the photography side. So sorry I do feel like Charlie Brown

    Reply

    kubelik Reply:

I’m sure what you have to do is so impossible that the current Mark 3 (? I assume you mean either a 1DMkIII or 1DsMkIII) cameras can’t handle it… despite the fact that they are still top performers for the rest of the photographic industry.

and really? you couldn’t tell from the advertising, the location of disclosure and event, and the image from the original advertisement that it had nothing to do with photography? because most people did.

poor ol’ Charlie Brown … just never was too bright

You guys do realize that 65%+ of Canon’s revenue is from business machines, right? And they’ve had the No. 1 position for something like 25 years? Camera gets the glory, copiers brings the money.

Actually, the collaboration between Adobe and Canon was announced on 9/16 in Europe, and 9/22 in the US. It coincides with Canon’s announcement of the new imageRUNNER ADVANCE MFP devices. It’s a big deal in the hard copier/MFP world.

The difference between the Japanese and other markets announcement is that Canon’s sales company in Japan will resell the the Adobe LiveCycle server, and the other markets won’t.
