Sigma releases 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG OS

September 4th, 2009 Posted in Third Party Lenses

Woo
Sigma has announced an image-stabilized telephoto zoom in the shape of the 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG OS. Suitable for use on both APS-C and full frame cameras, this lens incorporates Sigma’s Optical Stabilization technology allowing hand-held shooting at shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower than usual, along with a circular diaphragm for attractive rendition of out-of-focus backgrounds. The minimum focus distance is 1.5m giving a maximum magnification of 0.26x; unlike Sigma’s non-stabilized 70-300mm zooms there’s no extended macro focusing option. The lens will available for users of Sigma, Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Sony SLRs.

Yeah, that lens makes perfect sense on EF-S mount, great way to limit its sales.

Doofus, there are already normal lenses for FF for a long time, we need one for the APS-C cams. And no, the wide-angle designs of the current FF 28-35mm primes are not the same as a properly-made-for-crop fast normal lens.

I like the royal “we”, do you often think that there is more than one of you? And just to answer you quickly, first of all it’s Mr. Dufus to you, secondly please do explain why the current FF lenses are not suitable for crop cameras, I’m all ears.

Okay pompous Michael without an E, try reading more on Canon lens forums to get you up to date. While you’re at it, read up a little on the differences between a wide-angle lens design and a normal lens design. Get back to me when you’re sufficiently edified.

I have asked you a direct question – please do explain why according to you (and you only) the current FF are not suitable for crop cameras. Please do explain why would Canon want to release a top-notch, good quality lens as EF-S only mount that severly limits its sales. Do not escape into firing cheap shots and hiding behind empty rhetoric. You have made a statement, you have been challenged as to its accuracy so now answer the questions. If you can, if not please just remain silent for the future.

Idiot, I wouldn’t waste my time spoonfeeding you with knowledge I have gained by studying resources readily available on the Net. Like I said, read up a little before you expose your ignorance again. Your opinion is worth nothing unless you educate yourself first.

Don’t know US prices, but here in the UK its slated at £399 RRP.

Thats as much as the Canon 70-300IS is selling for right now, so it will have to be heavily discounted.

There are so many Canon 70-300mm tele zooms out there, consumers are already greatly confused.

I think it will flop as far as Canon versions go, but for other cameras, it might sell well.

So many? I only know about two. But yes, there are many 75-300s, including those out of production but still popping up on used market.

Sigma’s 70-300 non APO is trashy. I hope to god the redid the design. Otherwise this will be like putting sparkling candles on a log of crap.

Let me ask a novice’s question: when using such a 70-300 lens on a 1.3 crop camera is this lens – though suitable for the APS-c cameras – going to be 105-400 (in picture area of course, or a regular 70-300 one?

    Reply

    Squeege Reply:

Of there’s a crop factor (like a 1.3 sensor) the you times by 1.3.

    Reply

    Anonymous Reply:

    70 x 1.3 = 91
    300 x 1.3 = 390

On a 1.3 crop or APS-H sensor you will have an angle of view of a 91-390mm lens.

APS-C is 1.6 crop in Canon, so you’ll get 112-480 as a result.

Sorry, but I would not buy this lens. I have the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro. It is a lens that is capable of producing very good images, but you have to work to get the good ones. I found that AF with the lens was hit of miss with both the 300D and the 40D. Most of the time I used manual focus as the keeper ratio was better.
This new lens lacks the APO moniker and will probably mot be as good.
What did I replace my Sigma lens with? A Canon 72-200mm f/4L. Not as long, but with two features that make up for it. First, my Tamron 1.4x works perfectly with no visible IQ deterioration. Second, I can crop tighter to produce the same fov and wind up with a better image.

Unfortunately they didn’t keep the extended macro focusing option, the only reason which make me hesitate to throw this lens away.
It’s often handy to be able to take proxi photo with the same lens…

I, for one, would like the next lens rumour to be regarding only the new 70-200mm 2.8L IS II. That is the lens we all want to hear about.

You’ve got to love the Internet and the anonymous trolls, it’s so easy to show up and some forum and make an idiotic, baseless, sweeping statement like that. Of course they don’t know and people who think different and the thousands satisfied customers are just wrong:
