I had the 28-300 VC a while ago and the IS on that was brilliant… supposed to be 4 stops and certainly seemed to be.

I had the (now) older version of this lens, was truly fantastic on the 20D.

I wonder if this newer version is also coming was a new AF motor that isn’t as noisy. It focused fast, but was pretty annoying.
