Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II [CR1]

October 29th, 2009 | 124 Comments | Posted in Canon Lenses

Coming?
Received a few emails over the last day or two that Canon would be announcing a new lens or two at the end of November. One lens will surely be the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II.

I called Canon Canada who is out of stock on them and they have no ETA.

I’m looking into info from Canon USA.

This is a CR1 rumor for the moment. We’ve never been super successful in getting lenses right, but we’re getting better after the 7D launch.

5D Mark II Contest by Shane Hurlbut

October 27th, 2009 | 21 Comments | Posted in Canon 5D Mark II

From Planet5D
Shane Hurlbut has a new video posted on his website with a little contest going on behind it, you’ve got to discover which parts of the video were done with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and which were done with a Sony 950 and an Arri 235 (yes, a film camera!).

I’ve seen plenty of comments/blogs/forums where someone is saying it is difficult to combine the different formats or the Canon EOS 5D Mark II isn’t made to do big screen movies etc. Well folks, Shane is just doing it. You should see the excitement he showed at the Collision Conference 2 months ago during his keynote presentation (actually, I think we might be able to share some of that – keep watching this space).

He is just so excited about the new options he and his team have to produce beautiful moving images. Read more about Shane and what his team are doing over on Shane’s blog!

See Planet5D: http://blog.planet5d.com/2009/10/…….

I did very poorly at this.

EOS 7D Trouble – Official Word from Canon Japan

October 27th, 2009 | 40 Comments | Posted in Canon 7D

EMail Translation
This issue pertains to burst mode.

It is said that a part of an image, shot prior to the one after may appear as an afterimage (like it has been burned in) on the following shot. It is most unlikely that you will notice this effect in a normal jpeg but it is said that it may become apparent when you adjust the exposure, contrast, etc in post.

Google Translation: http://cweb.canon.jp/e-support/products/eos-d/eos7d-firmware.html

There should be word from Canon USA soon.

thanks Clark

Out of the office today
I won’t be around today, I’m off to have some fun with some mates. Some little band named Metallica has rolled into town and invited CR Guy to come see them(for a large fee).

I obliged.

1Ds Mark IV [CR1 & CR2]

October 25th, 2009 | 138 Comments | Posted in Canon 1Ds Mark 4

When?
The 1Ds Mark IV is probable for Photokina 2010 at the present. I have also heard springtime.

Specs
32mp Full Frame (I have also heard 38mp)
Dual DIGIC IV (no one is making a peep about DIGIC V)
New Video Features (Natural evolution)
ISO Range 100-6400 (no word on boost)
5fps
Same AF System as 1D4
Same body as 1D4

Nothing extraordinary here. Although, the sensor spec of 32mp comes from a pretty reliable source.

More Sample Shots!
A cr fan sent me a link to his flikr site with ISO samples from the 1D Mark IV.

We think ISO 65535 is actually H3 (ISO 102,400)

thanks Bruce

I only kept one
I only downloaded one sample image that I’ve seen on the web from the 1D Mark IV.

I’m not sure if it’s irresponsible for me to post it after Canon ran around the web having them taken down, however… I never grew up… so here it is.

(This is nothing new, you may have seen it already. If you find any others, point me in their direction)

ISO 12,000 - 1D Mark IV

ISO 102,400 - 1D Mark IV - Click for Full Size

disclaimer: I’m using this without the permission of the person that took it. If you want it taken down, let me know.

1D Mark IV – By Ole Jorgen Liodden

October 24th, 2009 | 27 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4

Preliminary!
Tough crowd!

Canon is not letting anyone do anything with the camera. Samples and everything are being pulled down all over the web.

Part of why I posted this is because of this iron fist Canon has on testers. If the camera turns out trouble free, then we’ll all be happy.

Keep checking back to his site to see the indepth review of the camera. I was just pointing out a guy that has done some good write ups in the past and is a good contributor to Canon Rumors.

Even Mr. Laforet isn’t allowed to release much.

First Impressions
A new preview/review is up for the 1D Mark IV. This is very preliminary. I’m sure the final review will be coming closer to the time of release.

Contest Winners!

Harder to judge than I thought
It honestly took solid debate with about 15 people to come up with a top 5. It was hard, I wish I had 5-6 bags to give away. Alas, there can only be one winner.

Vincent Laforet’s forbidden short!
You can check out the latest short film piece by Vincent Laforet from a Canon camera. This is the 1D Mark IV in action.

Yes, if you have this camera this is what your films will look like. (update: this sentence was a bit of sarcasm folks)
