1D Mark 4 / 1Ds Mark 4 Info [CR1]

Samy’s
I received an email saying that Samy’s has the 1D Mark 4 and 1Ds Mark 4 in their system. The person also claimed to have laid a deposit down on one of the bodies.

Received another email saying Canon was inviting Canon Pro Dealers to an event on the 20th of October. They were showing off some new product.
No info on what exactly was being shown. I also have not received any official email invites to such an event(s).
One thing to consider. Pro dealers are the only ones that can carry imagePROGRAF products.

Wow. I can’t wait to see all the stats. Oh well its all a dream, I can’t justify a 1D body at the moment, but I can keep drooling over it :P.
On a different topic, I did a portrait shoot this last weekend using my profoto setup and the 5D Mark II. I’m happy again, I forgot how great of a portrait camera the 5DII was. Sorry, I’m just so happy I wanted to share it with the world.
My friend also suggested I try doing a custom micro lens adjustment to my 24-70mm and sure enough, those photos turned out even sharper. Geezus I was getting individual eye lashes at 21.1 MP.

“Custom micro lens adjustment to my 24-70mm”? Was it a difficult procedure? Thanks.

It’s a feature of the 5D2 (and 50D, probably 7D — I’m not sure if the 1D3 has it) that allows you to teach the camera focus offsets for up to 20 lenses. It doesn’t seem difficult to do, just kind of time-consuming. Basically, you set the camera up on a tripod, and using mirror-lockup and a remote shutter release, you take shots of a test target at a variety of offsets and keep the one that looks sharpest. The best test target is probably the LensAlign system, but you can use other things if you want.

It can be time consuming. I got lucky. I was taking the portraits and noticed that the person’s cheek was more in focus than their eyes. So I told the 5DII to focus +1…if I remember correctly.
So after that, bingo, the eyes were tack sharp.
My friend mounts his camera to a tripod and lines up multiple objects, each slightly further away. He focuses on a object A. Then he reviews the image, if object b is sharper he’ll play with the micro lens adjustment till focus of obj. A is sharp.
Hope that makes sense.
For a long time I thought something was wrong with my 24-70mm L. God I love that lens. I’ve dropped it, taken it to the ocean many times…and it still gives me beautiful IQ.

Sweet Baby Jesus! My primary camera is in the shop for a smashed LCD. I would love to order a shiny new 1D Mark IV.

It was a 40D. I just got the cost estimate, $329. I told them to do it. What else could I do? I need a decent backup for when I get my 1D Mark IV!

I also need to add that it was attached to my 500f/4. The lens didn’t get damaged, thank god.

I wonder if Canon originally planned to introduce these in January but moved up the introduction in response to the Nikon D3s. If they did, the change probably won’t affect actual product availability

I think it’d be a mistake to launch something in response to Nikon’s D3s release. I’d rather they take their time and not ruin their reputation.
But you’re probably right.

bah… no 1dm4… i wish they came up with a 5d mark III , aka 3D, aka 7d features with 5dm2 FF. small body, not pro 1d body.

I feel the same because that is what I want to purchase. But on a second thought I am happy that they didn’t release a 5d mk ii because I would not have now the money to buy it. So in 1-2 years I would welcome a 5d mk iii

The 5D seems to be on a roughly three-year product cycle, so I’m not expecting a 5D3 until 2011. They could always surprise me, of course.

Yeah, I definitely expect there to be an update to the 1Ds prior to the 5D. 2011 seems like a reasonable guess.

Same here. I really wish they had a 5D III equivalent. I would definitely buy that.
If you took the specs from the 7D and combined it with the 5DII, it might be good enough not to need a 1Dm4.
Although somehow the 1Dm4 would probably still be better haha.

This actually makes sense if Canon have verified the newer Nikon rumors indicating that the D3s may not have the rumored 14fps. If they can announce just after the Nikon unveiling, they’ll both prevent people switching and just maybe hamper Nikon’s early sales. Marketshare becoming an increasing priority, it would be a good business move. We’ll know in two weeks.

Anecdotal I’ve found that Canadian retailers are discounting 1D3, and seem to have very low (if any) stock. I just picked up a new 1D3 for about CDN $1200 off.

To follow up to this, my order was cancelled as Canon is listing the 1D3 as discontinued. The retailer says that the camera’s availability and price will be announced tomorrow.

I’m super excited that this might actually indicated a new 1D announcement next week. However, if this turns out to be a freaking printer I’m going to be pissed.
