Don’t know why you said no one uses the 10fps that’s all I soot with now on my mark III and have placed a order for the mark IV, I can handle the 10fps but the new focus is what I’m looking for and also the 16mp is great. I’m printing 24×36 posters every week with 10mp and can’t for the new camera. Everyone should be very happy with the Mark IV, I’m a sports shooter :)

I never believed that skipping of IV and going straight to V nonsense. These specs sound pretty reasonable to me. I think this is the real deal, get used to it

Cisco Systems skipped IOS 13 (unlucky in US) and IOS 14 (unlucky in some other cultures) on their way to IOS 15 after 12 – it could happen here too.

I could not agree more, this looks like a logical progression, nothing “revolutionary” to me here.

  11. rhlpetrus Says:

What about ISo range? The 25K “native ISO” does not make sense, since it’s 8tops faster than base ISO and where is the DR to do that? If sensor is 13 stops of DR (better than any previous Canon), there’s only 5 stops left and everybody knows the last two stops in LLs are just noise basically, so actually we’re talking about 3 stops left, I wouldn’t like to see that image.

  12. vettesight Says:

I agree, who cares what it is called. If it does 10 fps or more with 16 or so MP with large pixels for great low light ability without real noise and spot on AF Canon will then reestablish itself as the leader in sport/nature photography circles. Tomorrow will tell.

    Reply

    a Reply:

You mean larger photosensors. Pixels will remain the same size.

    practically twins
except for minor details like the mark IV tab, the mic holes, the front “bump” at the right near the connectors and some rubber like “cover?” on the back right side that doesn´t appears on mark III.-

Hmmm, you could be on to something. I know some scoff at such a screen, but it would sure come in handy for low level shooting, high level shooting etc. I know right angle finders are avail, but a screen would be a better solution.

    brett maxwell Reply:

Coincides with the October 20 date. At worst, I think this is a firmware update (24/25p) for the 5DII. At best, a 1D that Laforet has already shot a film with.

Now this is more like it…a decent image, that looks credible, and now of course the teaser by V. Laforet.

If there has been a shortage of leaks, I would attribute this to Canon moving up the announcement from next year in order to better compete against Nikon’s new D3s.

The only question is if Canon has moved up the release date. Either way carries some risk.

If not, it will be a bummer to announce a new model but make buyers wait until early next year. It will then be transparently obvious that Canon is reacting to Nikon.

However if Canon is moving up the release date, I hope they make sure the first models that ship work well and do not have any bugs as a consequence. First impressions are so important.

    kubelik Reply:

bit of patience wasn’t so painful now was it? it sounds like a lot of the pros doing early testing are clearly excited for the camera, which certainly bodes well. I think Canon has learned the first impressions bit inch by painful inch

Best Buy in Miami (cough... I mean Justin) Reply:

I agree here. I have a feeling we’ll see (as per the rumors) a release mid December or so. Great Holiday gift to oneself. In time for the Winter Olympics as well. Hopefully this one has been (is about to be) field tested and approved by the usual suspects. I do think we will see an evolution in video recording. 720p or 1080p at 60fps sounds about right. Video RAW would blow the top off the HD-DSLR industry!

I think this will be a big leap forward in the video dept, along with some rumored new accessories. This will probably be more of an incremental evolution in the still photo dept.

Canon gets it…that video in dslr’s is a huge market. Neither Nikon nor Sony appears at this point to properly understand that, or are moving way too slow.

    Breaking News:

Specification have now been confirmed here in Tokyo, the camera will be named the 1D Mark IV and the specs are as follows:

    - 21.1 Megapixels
    - Full Frame with 1.3 Crop Mode
    - 8 FPS in Full Frame Mode
    - 12 FPS in 1.3 Crop Mode
    - Dual Digic IV Processors
    - Native ISO 25,600
    - Boost Mode ISO upto 102,400
    - 45 AF Points – 39 Cross
    - 63 Zone Metering
    - 1080p @ 24-60 fps
    - 720p @ 120 fps
    - S-RAW Video
    - HDMI HD video output
    - 3″ Fold & Tilt LCD Screen
    - Self Cleaning Sensor

The actual body ergonomics haven’t changed a great deal, with the biggest difference being the new Fold & Tilt LCD and the appearance of large hot keys beside the screen, that look slightly like the ones on Phase One Digital Backs.

There will also be three accessories at launch:
    1. VDSLR Mount System
    2. XLR Pro Audio Module
    3. 1TB Flash Recording Module

The XLR Pro Audio Module and 1TB Flash Recording Modules are made to connect into the VDSLR Mount System to convert the camera into a fully fledged Video device, changing the form factor into one that Filmmakers are more familiar with.

Will report back when I get further information.

    I forgot to add:
“What’s New in the EOS-1D Mark IV: Advanced Autofocus System”

“The new EOS-1D Mark IV Digital SLR camera features Canon’s most advanced Autofocus system to date. It is equipped with a newly developed 45-point AF sensor featuring 39 high-precision cross-type AF points, and an all new AI Servo II AF mode that gives still photographers the power and performance to track and focus a fast-moving subject at speeds up to 10 frames per second. With more than twice as many cross-type focusing points as the EOS-1D Mark III and a new AF sensor construction that improves performance in dark and bright light, and with low contrast subjects, the EOS-1D Mark IV has greater subject detection capabilities than any previous EOS model.
The newly-developed, high-precision Area AF sensor has 45 AF points including 39 cross-type AF points. All 45 AF points can be selected manually as well.
To complete the range of AF improvements, Canon has developed a new AI Servo II AF predictive focusing algorithm that significantly improves responsiveness and stability by making better decisions on focus tracking in a variety of shooting conditions.”
