7D Firmware Update [CR1]
October 13th, 2009 Posted in Canon 7D, Canon Firmware
In October
Received a link to a guy claiming Canon would be releasing a firmware update for the 7D sometime in the middle of October. Apparently the firmware addresses an issue with 720p. No word on what that issue is. There’s probably other small tweaks and fixes as well.

Does this firmware update remove the terrible 18MP sensor and replace it with something reasonable?

Have you even tried it? It’s far from terrible.

I hope it enables us to shoot 720p at 30 fps.

That might actually be “doable”; even better, if it came from a downscaled 1080p output the quality should improve quite a bit. Don’t see why it couldn’t be available at the same frame rates as 1080

Now if I can just pretend, for 12-18 months, that the 7D hasn’t been announced yet, I can get a ‘deal’ when it goes on rebate. If I could suspend reality a bit longer, I could get a used one on eBay….
Who am I kidding…

How has any discussion about updated firmware been up for this long without anyone mentioning a 24p firmware upgrade for the 5D Mark II?
Get on it people! I need unnecessary rants!

As a former 40D owner and current D300 user, I can honestly say that the 7D is awesome. Built with a purpose and new AF. 18MP? Well, I am actually beginning to prefer some noise in my photos but then again I prefer Nikon’s approach to noise processing.
Its fun to watch Nikon make a huge advancement (D3 D300) then Canon (5D Mkii 7D). Gotta love the free market.

yep, competition is awesome. technological maturity helps, too — we’re finally getting to a point where almost any DSLR product is good product; it’s just a question of how good.

Please add 24fps to 720P.
Please add low-level format option.
Please change main dial’s scroll direction. When I scroll counter-clock wise, I instinctly believe that it will scroll down, but it scrolls up.
Please give us a lower voltage sensor and AF system.
Please add variable/self-adjusting amplification to AF system(not a must, but an idea).
Please show power bar for 3rd party battery.

A battery costs almost an EF50/1.8II? That doesn’t sound too reasonable to me and the battery dried up really fast at its maiden voyage.

firstly, the EF 50 is a dirt cheap lens, so what’s your point? that’s how much batteries cost.
if it dried up really fast on its first use as you claim, perhaps someone didn’t wait for full charge before using it?
asking Canon to reverse the scroll direction simply because its not intuitive to you is really odd. firstly, it’s intuitive to plenty of the rest of us. secondly, there’s something called habit. nobody’s born knowing how to use a camera. but people are supposed to be able to learn?
lower voltage sensor and AF system — Canon’s engineers have already got the sensor running cooler than the 50Ds, and the general consensus is that sensor and AF are much improved over anything even remotely in this price range offered by Canon. the engineers are doing their job, don’t pretend to be one.
maybe it’s the third party batteries that need to figure out how to let Canon read them? I don’t think Canon engineers are intentionally handicapping third party batteries …
at least this bizarre list goes to show people are short on legitimate issues with the 7D so far

Common Sense says that if you use your right hand’s thumb to turn the thumb wheel and u flip ur finger up is suppose to scroll up not down, unless the menu was kind of stacked from left to right then u wouldnt be confuse, just use it and make a habit, ur thumb will adjust with time !

Phillip Bloom has been very close to Canon throughout the Camera’s pre-release. He’s a big name in the SLRcinema world. I think it’s safe to call this a CR3

Just an FYI: I had a 1D3 on order, which was being sourced directly from Canon through my local supplier. This camera was scheduled to arrive today, but my supplier has been informed that the product is now discontinued.
He also said that the 1D4 will be announced tomorrow, and that he would have availability and pricing by then.

Well, I spoke to them again and all I can say is that the announcement is on the 20th. I have a ballpark on the price, but that is it for now. Apparently everyone is still under NDA so pretty tight lipped.

Martin Beek from Marvels Film has published some more information from Canon on the subject, saying that the firmwareupdate addresses some issues he had with the camera, that can be read on his weblog: http://marvelsfilm.wordpress.com
Cheers.

Does anyone know when the 7D will drop in price in the US? (Or more important, on ebay.com). I really can’t wait to kick out my 5D, and get that new camera, but I’m on a student budget, so it can’t be right now
