Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II [CR1]

New Source
I’m told to expect a new 70-200 f/2.8L IS to be announced with the 1D Mark V (Skipping IV?).
Lenses have generally been very tough to track down with Canon. The only real success we’ve had was with the 7D.
The new source says to expect 1 other lens to be announced with it. Availability in the distant future.

70-200 f/4 sharp with no vignetting, corner to corner, and a ridiculously impressive IS. I understand the new Nikkor 70-200VR is just sick.
This one is going to be expensive, thinking $2199 but if they nail it, it will be worth it. I can sell my f4 and 135.

CR1, oh goody, just oh-so reliable fan-boy wish-list.
Unless some major changes are made to this lens it seems like a puzzling “upgrade”, it’s already a very good lens and as sharp as zooms can be. Including a better IS system will not make it this upgrade a worthwhile one for those who already have this lens and it will just unnecessarily increase its price.
And I would like to start my own CR1 rumour – the new lens will be a macro one! Wouldn’t that be sweet…

I would LOVE to see a 70-200 2.8 IS replacement. I’ve had 3 and never been real happy with any of them.

You are the first person I have ever heard say that. I hope you are kidding, cause I just ordered mine and it is to be delivered on Friday…
The industry as a whole pretty much says this is one of the finest lenses ever created by any manufacturers…

The other lens being released is the 24-85 2.8L IS to replace the 24-70 2.8L

Would be very interested if they can pare down the weight of the lens to about 1.1kg and less.
Improvement in optics should be a ‘given’ assumption but that’s not what I would desperately seek on this already stellar lens.
Things I hope they have achieved with this lens and in order of importance to me:
i) Reduction of weight to 1.1kg or less ( 20% reduction)
ii) Improved IS on par with the 200 f/2 IS L
iii) Improvement in optics to levels wide open (f/2.8) on par with the F/4 IS sibling.
iv) A more power efficient IS engine. The current one is
pretty power hungry ( at least in my experience..)

On a side note, my friend and I (on different computers) in different areas of the city I live in. Have been banned from this site for “24 hours” for the last few weeks. I have no idea why as we rarely post here (if ever) I guess we are victims of a blanket ban or something.
I am currently visiting through a anonymous proxy which is a pain.
Could CR GUY please review his blocking/banning system so 24 hours are not weeks.

Im thinking about buying the current 70-200 2.8L IS lens, do you guys think that the introduction of a new lens will drop it in price? how long are we assuming till this mystery lens is released?

Dropped by a local Canon store and the sales rep mentioned the discontinuation of the current 70-200 f/2.8L IS production, so I’m guessing this rumor’s true.. H-IS would definitely be sweet, but let’s hope there isn’t a major hike in price since it’s a replacement and not an addition.

H-IS is a good thing for macro, may be for wide angle either, but useless for tele. A camara shift is not visible if the object is far away what you would expect with a tele.

Why not a “EF 90-300 F/4 L IS” or “EF 90-300 F/4 L IS DO” for the folks using “EF 24-105 f/4 L IS” ?
Please a really sharp lens to be compatible with the next generation of FF chips with 30MP and Canon 7D.

I’m guessing they’re not skipping the mark IV. They’re probably just dropping the “Mark” from the name and calling the it a Canon 1D V (V for Video).

A reason for skipping the nummer four could be because four is a unlucky number for the japanese. (Also the chineese) Four is pronounced “shi” which is the same pronunciation as death.
What Spanky McFly says could also be a very good reason for skipping the 4.

I do not understand the demands for IS on a 24-70 (or equivalent) – IS is needed on a telephoto lens, because a tiny handshake is magnified by a long lens, but what’s the point on a short lens? I can understand putting a cheap IS system into lower-end lenses like the 17-85 (now replaced by the 15-85), but I don’t see the point of it in something like the 24-70. A cheap IS system would wreck the lens, and an expensive IS would be wasted.
Maybe the fanbois don’t understand that? Or maybe their hands shake when they touch expensive glass? If they could afford everything they rave about, maybe they’d spend more time shooting and less time talking (and we’d all be better off!).
On the current 70-200 f/2.8 IS the IS is a fairly early design, worth 2 (ish) stops. Updating it to a more current design makes sense. Using the Hybrid IS that was announced just before the new 100mm Macro would be interesting, but might make it rather expensive (not that that lens has ever been cheap :) ). I seriously doubt, however, that they’d use the IS from the 200mm f/2L – that’s an extreme high-end design (5 stops!), for a lens that costs a lot more than the price of the existing 70-200. Since I got the f/2L I haven’t used the 70-200 :)

Cynic, “the point” would be to take handheld shots in low light with a moderate dose of ISO. The 24-105mm f/4L IS is great but sometimes you need f/2.8.
Although the 24-70 is not what I would call a _true_ macro lens (like my 100mm f/2.8 macro), it does nice closeups with about a 16″ minimum focal distance (and even says “Macro” on the side and in the distance window). This lens would be a natural for the new hybrid-IS and if they added that I would buy one tomorrow.

I was really hoping for something on the 24-70 regarding IS as well. Please make this happen Canon!
I bet they are skipping IV because 4 is an unlucky number in some asian cultures. This would not be the first time Canon had done that (Canon S3 IS went straight to Canon S5 IS). Probably there are other examples too.
Having just bought the previous version of this lens about 4 months ago, and having waited on a wide-angle lens hoping to buy the 24-70 with IS, I am a little ticked off right now! :)
