I’ve been sent this a couple hundred times, so I guess I should post it. :)

Canon USA has the fall rebate program rolling since the 22nd of October.

So are these the models that are earmarked for replacement with new models? Is this the method used for Canon to clear their stocks? (I’m waiting for a new model 500mm)

I just purchased the T1i and 70-200mm f/2.8 (non-IS) on Oct 1 from B&H. As you can see I put the money into the glass, not the body (the 7D is very impressive, I was just about $1000 short :) ) I checked B&H price today and their $80 “rebate” brings the price back down to my purchase price (from B&H). It seems like, at least with 70-200 f/2.8, they increased the base price by $80, only to offer an instant rebate of $80. Not sure about the other lenses.

That’s what they do. You’re better off buying the lenses from your local photography store during the rebates. I watch the prices on Amazon and Adorama about 4-5 times a week and they were ALL cheaper last week. Even the Flash units. The best one is the 70-200 2.8L IS –> It was $1649.00 last week and now that the rebate is on they are selling it for $1,799.00. That means that they marked the lens UP $300 for the SALE!!!!! Really, this whole “rebate” thing is a total sham rip-off! I’m not sure what’s happened that has forced the prices up so far, but the 70-200 2.8L IS was $1499.00 last November when I bought it on the “rebate”. So, I have managed to INCREASE the value of my purchase by $450 in one year. Not bad for me, but very bad for new Canon owners.

EU receives its own share of rebates, its just the lack of announcements that makes them seem like weird, random price jumps. :)

The dollar’s value has increased 11% from last year over the Euro and it has only fallen 3% compaired to the Yen. Regardless, this is not a long term slide and it is in fact on the way back up. I would expect the value of the dollar to increase 20% compaired to the Yen over the next 12 months. Bloomberg Finance has show research that proves this thought. I think that Canon is trying to gain additional profits on their camera equipment to help offset their losses in production of Micro Processor Manufacturing Machines, which is historically their biggest profit leader. I hope that Pentax, Sony, and Nikon take advantage of this and lower their prices to grab more market share. Canon has a great set of products, but they shouldn’t treat their loyal customer base as a piggy-bank.

Prices fluctuate for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to the wholesale price. This isn’t Econ 101 and there are numerous market conditions which might be responsible for any particular item’s price changes. The idea B&H would lay in wat for a manufacturer’s rebate just to hike a price to scam the unwitting is ludicrous and flies in the face of our 35+ year uninterrupted history of unimpeachable ethics and transparent integrity.

My comment above was only factual. I like B&H. I did a lot of research before spending >$2000 on new equipment (body, 70-200mm f/2.8, and filters). I had a problem with one of the filters and B&H took care of it – very quickly. I would definitely shop there for my next equipment. Very knowledgeable staff, excellent prices, and I like non-chains (shop local). I could have saved a few $$ at Amazon, but went to B&H.
Is this type of pricing indicative of a long term price increase from Canon?

Canon had a lens and flash price increase a couple of weeks prior to the rebates going into effect on 10/22. Some dealers might have raised their prices right away, some may have held off depending on their inventory and some might have looked at it on an item-by-item basis.
Unfortunately the timing makes it appear that dealers may have raised prices to offset the rebates. While I cannot speak for all dealers I would not hesitate to say that the reputable dealers simply did what Canon and the market (supply and demand) forced them to do.
If you want to point fingers, my suggestion is at Canon.

I am about to buy the 580EX2 at Amazon.
How to claim the rebate? The form doesn’t have anything to fill in.
