US Rebates – Fall 2009

October 18th, 2009 Posted in Canon Rebates

Apparently starting this month
Pricepoint claims to know which lenses will be getting rebates in the US. They don’t know the rebate amount however.

I will point out the 70-200 f/2.8L IS is on the rebate list. This lens was pulled last minute for Canon Canada rebates.

thanks Raymond

I’d have to check to be certain, but I don’t see anything on this list that wasn’t also on the summer rebate list. Right down to the macro flashes.

The Speedlite 270EX is on this list, and wasn’t in the summer rebate list… but I agree, it looks like the same as the last one.

Hey CR guy, can’t you tell us what lenses will be announced at the launch of the 1DmkIV in Australia on October 20th? What kind of a rumor site is this that can not predict what will happen less than 48h ahead?

Canon has shown everyone that they’ve really stepped up the game in terms of plugging leaks. Many of the people within the company at higher levels that aren’t directly involved with product development do not receive specs and availability data until just before release.

so how about stop flaming the CR guy?

what kind of Canon fan are you that you don’t have any idea of how the company is currently operating?

wow calm down CR fanboy? Is it not a good thing that the site’s gotten to a point people expect better of them? Look at any established rumor sites out there and you would expect the same thing.

my problem is with the general attitude that people have developed feeling they are entitled to accurate information ahead of time, all the time, and that any time they don’t get it, that constitutes a website or organization dropping the ball. these people are the same people who make little effort to understand how the camera works and why it functions this way.

with the exception of Nikon and possibly Sony, no other DSLR manufacturer has Canon’s desire or need to keep such secrecy about its products. for everyone else, early leakage of mystery products can allow for hype build-up that can carry them to deeper market penetration. case-in-point: Olympus EP-1. however, for Canon, especially given the disproportionate (but well-directed) criticism it has received over the last generation of products, excepting the 5DMkII, pre-hype leads to excessive consumer expectations, leading to both disproportionate and sometimes baseless criticism about new-release products.

Canon has proven with the 7D it can plug the leaks — I followed a number of international websites that have in the past come through with accurate specs before product releases, and not a single website convincingly posted the full set of 7D key specs until just shy of the announcement. if they can do it for the 7D, they can do it for the 1DMkIV.

when it comes to marketing, canon is a leader. and they did do viral marketing in the earlier camera releases. But this time, since canon had bad pr about the AF, any clue before the release would trigger massive discussions about the AF, which canon would not prefer.

    0 leaks is impressive
wonder if Canon has held off on distributing 1dm4’s to the reviewers. Some one at dpreview has to have seen this camera if it exists and not a word. Hope it lives up to the hype or lack of hype.

At this point I’m doubting that much will happen on Oct 20.

Look at the amount of advance info that came out about the 7D the week or so before its official announcement. The weekend before the announcement we had pictures, specs, etc.

Most manufacturers want some leaks out there to tweak the public’s interest.

The 1D4 (or whatever they call it) is going to be announced on Tuesday. It is impressive though that there aren’t any major leaks, other than that everyone knows Tuesday is the day.

I don’t believe any company is so good as to contain all leaks, even Apple is not perfect, and they are about as obsessive as anyone in controlling leaks.

I also believe that Canon, just as they did with their 7D, wants some advance info leaked…it’s good marketing.

I hope the 1D4 is released Tuesday…but the more we approach the date with no leaks, the more I doubt it.

when you say “I don’t believe any company is so good as to contain all leaks”, how about referring back to the 7D released last month. who had correct specs from it? based on my recollections, pretty much nobody on the internet had a full set of correct specs.

what other evidence do you need to believe? Canon’s already done it once.

so you saw the pics and specs of 7d only on release day?

Re pre-announcement leaks for the 7D: if you read this website, or Northlight Images, etc…you were able to see pictures and an accurate spec list from Asian web sites, etc…

There was no shortage of info re the 7D going into the final weekend before its announcement.

The 7D rumormill was great it turned into posting after posting of debate between the full frame and sub frame camps. As a manufacturer what more could you want as far as pre-release excitement?
