Go apply for a job. Being smarter than all current Canon employees combined, you will make it straight to the CEO's chair. And one month later all Canon products will be perfect. It's that simple.

"...an 18mp 8fps Full frame sensor in a small body and a cheap price would kill the 5d mark II, 1D mark IV, and 1Ds mark III...

Well, the question is whether Canon wants to produce and sell such a killer camera, or continue sticking it's head in it's .... err, in the sand.... and let Nikon or Sony produce and sell such a killer camera without a Canon competitor.

For me the 7D has been the best camera I have owned and used to date. I have owned the 20D,40D & 50D and there is no question the pictures are truly amazing on it, and I would never go back to the 50D. Some people might have had a bad copy, but I also beleive that majority of the issues are user error. The 7D is a diffrent camera and takes about a month to figure it out. Watching the B&H Video on the 7D really helped me alot. A semi-pro photographer friend of mine shot with the 40D and bought a 7D also,, has never used the 40D again.. going to buy a second 7D because it is that good. The features IQ is excellent. Forget about this stupid reviews of images being soft. My 40D was soft and focus was terrible. If you set the right picture settings on the 7D, even the .jpg files are great out of it. If you shoot raw, and process the image,, you get excellent results.

I think you are right about a FF 3D. However, an APS-H 3D would make a lot of sense in the lineup. And the 1D mkIV AF system really only works at its best with f/2.8 and a very few selected f/4 lenses. For most of Canons lenses, the AF sensors are line sensors and not cross sensors. I think I would prefer the 19 cross sensors of the 7D (3D) over the many lines ensors of the mkIV. So, yes, a 3D could have a place in the lineup.

Thanks for taking the time for the long description of how to MA. It is almost overwhelming.

However, the AF error on the 7D I had my hands on seemed to be beyond micro adjust. It was front-focusing slightly at about 10ft and badly (totally blurred) at 200ft with my 400mm that hasn't been calibrated but focuses reasonably accurately (far better) with my 40D that I have had calibrated at a Canon repair center. Live View AF showed me that the 7D sensor isn't bad, and I may try my luck again sometime cause I liked everything else about the camera except IQ when using normal AF. Still, if I could chose between the 7D and a 3D with a lower high ISO noise APS-H sensor, I would go for the 3D as I live so far up north that light is in short demand for about one third of the year. I would love a camera with ISO 3200 noise at the same level as ISO 400 noise on my 40D.

Have you actually used a 7D and looked at the results? I have, and have been tempted to crossgrade from my 5D2.

I hope that you didn't dismiss the 7D completely? Give it a try once more. This time prepare yourself for precise calibration for chosen lenses. It's not an easy process and there are several methods depending on kind of lens. My advice is use a macro lens like Tamron 90mm or Sigma 50mm. Use macro rail because the DOF involved might be as narrow as 0.5 mm. Your goal is to check resolution of the sensor and calibrate camera at least for one macro lens. Forget about the birds for a while. Set the camera on sturdy tripod on maximum stable ground/floor. Set the rail on the scratch. Mount the 7D camera on the rail squarely against a A4 sheet of graph paper in distance corresponding to 1.1-1.2 reproduction coefficient. Draw diagonals to define center. Check corners to be sharp and lines parallel to viewfinder. It's time consuming process. The lighting must be stable all the time. Check histogram for correct metering -- it's important. Don't use anything Auto to prevent messing by the camera. WB set according to light source. Sharpening in camera: low or standard, depending on your needs. Check if AF is on. Set mode dial on Av and diaphragm at f/2,8 and make 3 consecutive shots. Write the time of exposition, switch mode dial to M and copy the time. Switch lens to MF. Now you are fully manual. Make series of shots moving camera 0,5 mm each time using release cable. Observe the file size. The shot with maximum file size corresponds to maximum sharpness when shooting JPG. Check difference between best AF and best MF. You need now to calibrate AF so the results were very near.
Next repeat above procedure with your 40D and make decision. If you can't do it don't complain about the 7D.

the 7d is the king of what it is designed to be. Releasing such a camera is a Landmark not only for canon but for general photgraphy industry. it reminds me with the release of the original 5d.

3d ? this is a drunk man's wish. for the most part, an 18mp 8fps Full frame sensor in a small body and a cheap price would kill the 5d mark II, 1D mark IV, and 1Ds mark III. such a specs will be sold above the price of the 1d mark IV and there is no space over there.

I replaced my XSI with the 7d...they aren't even close in IQ, the 7D is WAY better!!! I use mostly primes and L glass and the colors and detail are much better. Also after updating my firmware to 1.1.0 I'm not getting any ghosting issues. I am primarly a "birder" and action shooter so full frame for me at 3 frames a second and the ff sensor don't make sense. Just my thoughts about this great camera.

I agree with the APS-H comment. I like that as a nice compromise and it allows you to bump to say 13-14 megapixel and still support stopping down the lens for landscapes. Also, what is the point in a FF 7D and a 5D? It seems like at that point are merging the two lines. The sensor cost is a big deal and I would guess that APS-H size would be the right balance to keep the 5D, 7D and 50D well differentiated.

My 40D can't hold up well at 1600 ISO. Too much noise. So I try to keep it at 800 or less. For me, being able to shoot at 1600 with noise like I get on my 40D at 400 would be a real treat. That way I could bump to 3200 and 'cope' with the noise in post processing.

Also, increased dynamic range would be a real benefit. It sounds like the P&S folks are coming up with novel ways to deal with their camera's notoriously poor DR. Sony's idea of taking several very rapid shots (even handheld) at different exposures and combining them for high DR sounds promising.

Sony's entry into the marketplace has at least stirred the pot of cool alternative ideas...
