5D Mark II Firmware 1.2.4?
December 14th, 2009 Posted in Canon 5D Mark II, Canon Firmware
From a Chinese Forum
Apparently the new version doesn’t add the new functionality we’ve all been waiting for.
Forum Link: http://translate.google.de/…..
I did receive an email a couple days ago saying we’d see a new firmware for the 5D Mark II to make it compatible with the WFT-E4 II. That new firmware should appear any day now I’m told.

Well, personally I really would appreciate the firmware for shooting movie in 720p instad of full-hd. I burn my video on DVD – so 720p is far enough for me and hopefully it comes with the 25 fps allso, for supporting the PAL instead of NTSC… I see a lot of interlacing on my video :/
I know it’s not a Video recorder, but options limited to either vga or full-hd is simply not enough, there should be a step inbetween!

Interlacing on 720p .. euhm?
I agree with the step in between, not that I would use it..

It doesn’t sound like a reasonable firmware version number (at least for an Official release of the 24/25p -and 29.97fps- update) and doesn’t show the Video tab menu either….
This could be a different firmware version for other purposes. Or a fake too.
We could expect 1.2.0 to be the 24/25p update, but 1.2.4… sounds even further, with more fixes/improvements (but no video menu…)
But who knows. We’ll probably have some news soon.

It’s possible they used a bunch of firmware #’s
trying to get the 1080p24 to look good

Very possible indeed, we also thought that.
Although sounds bit “ridiculous” to release a 1.2.4 to the public even if they had to test/fix/rebuild lot of versions to get one good enough…
Anyway, the final result is what really matters :)

Is it possible to crank up the fps of 720p to 120fps like the RED? I would love to make some slow-mo action shots of me and my girlfriend riding bikes, and can’t seem to do it with the limited 60fps.

100 fps would be satisfactory too. Maybe at 1080p.

No, we must push for higher and faster. Forget dual digic, we’ve got to get sixteen digic processors with a new type of central processing chip. Kind of like multi core processing.

Are you sure that’s all she’s riding ;)
In all seriousness though, you guys are asking too much for more than 60fps. It won’t happen.

you might see 720p120 from the 1DsIV
but I think its unlikly to happen, the read out speed of the sensor will have to be faster.

What type of sensor would that be? I’ll do whatever it takes to capture the gelatin nodules of her thighs ripple while enjoying her evening bike ride.

I won’t sleep until the 5D is capturing actual reality at the theoretical quantization of temporality.

Seems Canon is struggling to build a firmware patch to the 5DMII to justify it’s $1000 premium over the 7D.
The problem might be the 5DMII has just one lonely Digic4 processor for all the things it needs to do.
Reminds of Star Trek when Scotty warns Captain Kirk of the limitations of the Enterprise’s engine “She cannae take any more, Cap’n! “

The $1,000 is worth it for IQ, FF, and resolution alone. Please.

I can understand how Canon apologists are happy to pay any premium that Canon assigns to their cameras.
However, as a Canon customer and not an apologist, the release of the 7D is cause for hesitation. If you don’t believe that preserving the 5DMII price point is of concern to Canon, then you’re nieve.
The announcement of a firmware ‘update coming’ that virtually coincided with the 7D announcement is all the proof needed. Further proof is endless customer consternation at DPReview forums on whether to get a 7D or 5DMii and which is better.

Is there a way to avoid the processors in the 5d all together and use an external processor and encoder to choose what frame rate as well as video format? I’ve also heard that on the 1d there is a hack that uses the hdmi port for the same purpose.
