Is there a way to avoid the processors in the 5d all together and use an external processor and encoder to choose what frame rate as well as video format? I’ve also heard that on the 1d there is a hack that uses the hdmi port for the same purpose.

GUYS! Where is that bloody FIRMWARE?!?! I got my 5DMKII and I need 25FPS, not 30!! And I need 60FPS!!! BTW, what must be the speed of my CompactFlash? I have Transcend 8GB UDMA 300x, is it ok for the video?

“Firmware Version 1.2.4 incorporates the following improvements and fixes:

1.Supports the WFT-E4 II wireless file transmitter that was released in December 2009.
2.Corrects a phenomenon in which visible noise may appear in images taken by continuous Bulb shooting.”

I can understand how Canon apologists are happy to pay any premium that Canon assigns to their cameras.

However, as a Canon customer and not an apologist, the release of the 7D is cause for hesitation. If you don’t believe that preserving the 5DMII price point is of concern to Canon, then you’re nieve.

The announcement of a firmware ‘update coming’ that virtually coincided with the 7D announcement is all the proof needed. Further proof is endless customer consternation at DPReview forums on whether to get a 7D or 5DMii and which is better.

Seems Canon is struggling to build a firmware patch to the 5DMII to justify it’s $1000 premium over the 7D.

The problem might be the 5DMII has just one lonely Digic4 processor for all the things it needs to do.

Reminds of Star Trek when Scotty warns Captain Kirk of the limitations of the Enterprise’s engine “She cannae take any more, Cap’n! “

Very possible indeed, we also thought that.

Although sounds bit “ridiculous” to release a 1.2.4 to the public even if they had to test/fix/rebuild lot of versions to get one good enough…

Anyway, the final result is what really matters :)

I won’t sleep until the 5D is capturing actual reality at the theoretical quantization of temporality.
