*UPDATED* 5D Mark II Firmware Update
December 6th, 2009 Posted in Canon 5D Mark II, Canon Firmware

This image is actually from the 1D Mark IV. So does that cast some doubt on 60fps @ 720p being available in the 5D Mark II firmware update?
thanks Tom
Still 2010
The new firmware for the 5D Mark II will not only feature 24p, but there will also be a 720p @ 60fps mode.
I neglected reporting on this because I just figured that was a given. I’ve received numerous tips on this.
Can-Do Film Festival
Philip Bloom has announced a film festival focusing on films made with Canon hybrid DSLR’s.

Smart move; the 5dii is still in many ways the gem of the entire Canon lineup; it will probably go down as a breakthrough camera, the one that ignited the video DSLR revolution.

Any chance of a firmware update for 24fps 1080p on the Rebel T1i?
Reply
Paul Reply:
December 7th, 2009 at 3:21 am
Think the T1i was capped for 1080p @ 20fps because of hardware constrains- i.e. that’s as much data as the hardware is capable of reading.
Anyone know for sure?

The 500D HD video capability was capped by the hardware constraint called “product differentiation”, nothing more.

Sure, world doesn’t stop and people still survive.
while it is a common practice in the industry, canon’s marketing is very particular about it.
Everybody and his mother in law knows nobody shoots 1080P with 20 frames. so what is the point in implementing it?

To give it the “full HD” tag. Anyways, there’s a Magic Lantern update to fix it. Just haven’t found it yet.

Truth be told, the vast majority of users can’t tell 720 from 1080, even the fraction who actually have 1080 displays. I’ll even be so bold as to posit that few can even tell 720 from 480. My wife sure can’t.

If it’s something you don’t like (1080p with 20 frames) then obviously you shouldn’t buy it?

switch to PAL from ntsc and 25 and 50 show up
Reply
December 7th, 2009 at 2:39 am
25 and 50 fps will appear when you switch to PAL mode. The image is showing NTSC formats.
Reply
December 7th, 2009 at 2:42 am
That screen shots only show 24p, 30p and 60p because video output was set at NTSC. If it is set at PAL the same menu will show 24p, 25p and 50p.

The menu displayed was froma 7D, Tim Smith was using it as a reference of what to expect from the upcomming firmware for the 5DMk2.

The YouTube video only – unambiguously – says the 5DII will get 24p . . . . like so many Canon rumours/leaks/announcements it is typically vague.
This is what is said: word for word -
” . . . there’s going to be a firmware upgrade coming for the 5D which will add 24 frames to the . . to the camera itself . . . and we’re expecting that . . eh . . first half of next year . . . so we’ll add . . eh . . the 24 frame rate to the 5D and that will match the other three cameras which do 24 . . 23.98 . . em . . 29 . . eh . . 30 . . and . . eh . 60i . . . I’ll just have the 20p [sic] as well as 1080 now . . so you have 1080 and 20 [sic] . . eh . . 720 . . it’ll do 60 frames per second . . 60p in 720 mode, so you’re going to get a lot of choices in terms of frames rates (unintelligible mumble) coming through . .”
Not entirely clear, but what is clear is that the 5DII will get 24p . . . “that will match the other three cameras which (also) do” . . .
Hmmmm . . . .
Hope I am wrong and the 5DII will get the whole range of frame rates – but this video is typically (forCanon) far from clear.

Curiously we posted this “new” at the 5dmark2 Blog 3 DAYS AGO, and twitted it, but since it seemed nobody saw or realized about it, we posted a picture on Twitter yesterday… then all the “roar” occurred (Re-twitts and 2,000 hits on the image)…
Clearly an image can tell more than words… but the post included the video, not only words!!
50/60p was never mentioned in the official announcement more than 1 month ago, so this is new, and coming from Tim Smith at a Canon Workshop we take it seriously.

What about Auto ISO in Manual shooting. Yes I know you can do it in Live View, when in movie mode.
I think this is a feature that Canon owes to 5D2 users. Especially those like me who bought after 7D was released, but was still willing to pay a 1K more for a camera that was a year older, just to have FF sensor!!

Agreed. We also included it in the List of FEATURES REQUEST:
http://5dmark2.wordpress.com/2009/09/28/5d-mark-ii-features-request/
(as told before to Erik) Call Canon, ask to register your Feature Request, they are taking them and are very nice people (even if you already called, you can do it again for another feature)
And you should mention you preferred 5D2 spending 1K more than 7D… good argument too.

Ok, very cool, and long overdue, but why not 720p 30fps? Wouldn’t that cut file sizes in half allowing for longer recording times?

P.S.: That is a VERY desired frame rate too, keeping good resolution (HD) while doubling the recording time….
That would be REALLY useful for lot of tasks…

As a landscape and event stills photographer, I am hoping that Canon remembers me and provides shutter speed limiting for auto-ISO, a feature that is on many point and shoots (e.g., my Panasonic DMC-LX3). With the unforgiving resolution of the 5DMK2 full frame sensor, I want to be able to limit my 16mm to 1/60th, not 1/10th, for example. And @Torban, I agree, autoISO in manual still mode.

You may not want to download this firmware update. Don’t forget that you are losing the lower-memory 30p option for VGA.

1st of all it won’t be out for 4-6 Months, so I doubt anyone will be downloading it for a while.
where is it announced that VGA 30p is being cut from the menu?

don’t expect so many months…
VGA 30p doesn’t appear on the menu at the picture, that lead to think it was cut, but since it’s not actually from a 5D2 firmware, there’s chance it still there :) (we hope) along with some (if not many) other “Film Making” features… Better Canon implement them, because they really can.

I can’t see them remove a feature, I can see the uproar and petitions that would cause.
I assumed that was in reference to the pic, but wanted to know if it was from somewhere else.

Sorry guys, this isn’t happening.
This screenshot was from the 1DmkIV. Not the 5DmkII.
The menu shot was mistakenly attributed.
The 5DmkII is NOT getting 720p or 60fps.

As I have stated earlier the menu screenshot was not from a 5DMk2 but from a 7D. Tim Smith was using this as a reference to what to expect with the new firmware for the 5DMk2. Do listen to what was said not just what you saw on the video.

You are right.
Either it’s from a 1D4 or 7D, Tim Smith was using it to explain what is going to be on the 5D2.
Some people here seems not to pay enough attention to what Tim says, or didn’t even watch the video…

What Tim said was rather jumbled. If this is official, and that’s what he meant to say, wouldn’t it be possible for someone to get him to clarify it in an email or something?

That is exactly what Tim Smith said, new 5D firmware will include 720p 60fps allowing more video options matching that of the 7D and 1DMk4. Couldnt be clearer.

A photo from a 7D labeled as a 5D MkII. You ought to edit the caption of the photo, since it’s just plain wrong. Make it plain that it’s a 7D photo and add that the 5D’s NEXT upgrade should look like this.

5.10 – ..firmware upgrade that will add 24p and we’re expecting that first half of next year..
…and we’re expectingthat first half of next year”
sentence ends there… then he repeats himself and its very jumbled, i think, im pretty sure the audio’s been doctored.

Hi all,
A bit off topic, but I’ve heard that Canon are working on a DSLR hybrid camera that uses the same full frame sensor as the 5D, but will be similar to the ‘RED’ series of cameras.
If true, this would be an amazing bit of kit!!!
