New ones coming
Future “big white lenses” are going to have a restyled lens hood mechanism. The big knob approach is going to be replaced for something much better. Canon has been researching lens hood protection of the lens for a long while now.
The updated super telephotos will get a styling, coating and IS update.
On the agenda to be updated? (From past reports)
200 f/2L IS NO
300 f/2.8L IS YES
400 f/2.8L IS YES
500 f/4L IS YES
600 f/4L IS YES
800 f/5.6L IS NO
The new hood design could appear in the 200 & 800 as a standalone update for those lenses.

Launched Quietly
Nikon has launched a new 300 f/2.8. They also launched a new 2x TC alongside it.
These companies seem to be launching stuff when it’s ready, instead of on a set schedule. That’s good for us!

Site Issue
The site issue some people experienced should be remedied now. If it still persists, clear your cache and relaunch your browser.
For those on Wave
There is a Canon Rumors Wave starting up. I’m a newbie at it, but maybe it can evolve into something cool.

New lenses in the wild
I’m told that a certain TV station will be using the 14-24 f/2.8L, 24-70 f/2.8L IS & 70-200 f/2.8L IS II for upcoming productions.
The lenses are planned for a 2010 release.
CR’s Take
There is going to be a lot of rumors piling up in regards to lenses over the next little while. Pay close attention to the CR ratings. Hopefully we get some CR2+ stuff soon.

Lots of patents, how many are real products?
Patent Number: 20090180199

I posted this a few days ago and removed it because I didn’t really understand it.
Patent Number: 20090201585
EF 600 f/4 DO
EF 70-300 f/4.5-5.6
EF 28-35 f/1.6-2.1
Patent Number: 20090284847
EF 14 f/2.8
EF 24 f/2.8
EF 300 f/4 IS

As always with patents, I really don’t speak their language and a lot can be lost in the translation. I’ll keep this posted and let you folks dissect them.

The Review
Here’s a head to head review of Nikon’s D5000 & Canon’s T1i.
Conclusion snippet
“This finds us in a familiar spot. The best camera of the two is really a camera that combines the features we like of both. Another “it depends,” but we find ourselves leaning towards the Nikon D5000 for a few reasons……..”

Replacement of the SX1 IS
Received an email saying Canon would be replacing the SX1 IS with a completely different camera. The camera would be modeled around the G11 and use a CMOS based sensor. The “GX1″ would also shoot 1080p video with various frame rates. All other features would be on par with the G11.
No word on whether noise would take a step back or not.
The camera would be a niche market product and carry the appropriate price tag (a big one).
Announcement near the end of January or early February.

This image is actually from the 1D Mark IV. So does that cast some doubt on 60fps @ 720p being available in the 5D Mark II firmware update?
thanks Tom
Still 2010

5D Mark II Menu System with new Firmware | photo: Planet5D
The new firmware for the 5D Mark II will not only feature 24p, but there will also be a 720p @ 60fps mode.
I neglected reporting on this because I just figured that was a given. I’ve received numerous tips on this.

Bring it on!
Our friend Ole Jorgen Liodden took his 7D to one of the most extreme areas of the planet and put it against the elements. The 7D appears to have won.
