If there is NO firmware upgrade does that mean that that a 5Diii might come sooner? What reasonable estimates are there about the earliest and latest dates that a 5D3 might be released.

(I'm new to this website so forgive me if this topic has already been debated to death)

I use my 5DMK2 at weddings all the time, and have yet to miss a crucial shot due to focus issues. Also, when thinking about the reception where it is dark, or the ceremony where it is darker, I almost always have my 580EX2 on top, which assists with AF. No problems here!

Disagree - The 40D and 50D do not have very accurate AF IMHO. Sure, they're a bit faster, but they arent always more accurate. Another thing - the 5D has much narrower DOF at the same focal length of the 40D or 50D, therefore, for the untrained amature, it might be easy to miss focus. From my experience with the 5DMK2, I've gotten more consistent focus results that with my 40D.

When I go to the Supermeet site, the prize clearly says "24p/25p firmware to be released separately". That tells me they have zero idea when, and we're all still in the wait game. I'm just saying.

Seemed like at one point this thread had something to do with a firmware update. Apparently there is nothing to report since the original post.

I'm still awfully curious about the possibility of 720-60p along with 24p. Has anyone heard anything about that?

I don't think we'll see it, personally. Maybe it is possible to do, but if I was Canon I would not add this feature. I think there are too many people like me out there who are in need of both a 5D and 7D, but only want the latter as a second body because it offers 24 and 60. If the firmware includes 60, my 7D is ebay-bound. In effect, if Canon DOES throw in the 60p (yes, aliasing and all), it means $1400 (more or less) in my pocket.

(I'm not raking on the 7D, really. I just don't need it or prefer it for anything other than 24 and 60p. As a still camera, it's a fairly capable backup body, that is all.)

haha, your never gonna believe this but i totally read the first reply wrong. i thought instinctively by system we were talking about different models under one brand. not two different brands entirely. thaz my bad. so to clarify. i agree.

Couldn't have said it better.

The recent price drops of the 5DmarkII indicate they feel the heat coming or they are trying to get rid of inventory.

What? Use of facts and experimentation? We have no place for that here! :)

Seriously though, nice work, I'll have to look into a 135/2 lens then.

With all this hoohaa and flowing bile over the 5D2 focusing system recently, I decided to try mine again. It's usually used only for landscapes, more often with shorter manual focus lenses so AF isn't really an issue for me. I took it out to get some pictures of my 4 year old son and his older brother leaping around at play. Normally I would use either a compact with some pre-setting of focus or my EOS 350D for these sort of shots, but yesterday made a comparison of the 350D against the 5D2. Using the EF 24-105/4 lens honours were pretty evenly shared, so perhaps the 5D2 does fall rather short. However using the EF 135/2 the larger camera was streets ahead in speed and accuracy.

Maybe a rather rough and ready comparison, but one that suggests the 5D3 should get better AF, logically slighty improved weather sealing up to 7D standards too, but, please Canon, keep the facility to change screens! Oh, and 100% VF and +/- 3.0 EV please.

MP? I can crop slightly and still print to A3 at 300ppi, so personally, I don't want more – unless some future development with printers takes us past the 300ppi “barrier”. Personally, I would rather see improved IQ with the same number of pixels. Evolution rather than revolution.

Come on! Canon had THREE YEARS to update the 5D. In the meantime, the 40D and 50D came out with cross-type sensors at all the AF points. You're telling me that Canon couldn't do that most minimal improvement on a $2700 camera?

Also in the meantime, Nikon released the D300 with pretty much the same AF system as on the $4500 D3. Canon didn't notice? You don't think Canon had some knowledge that the D700 would show up with that same AF system? Yet Canon went ahead with the 5D2's very limited autofocus.

Yes, 21mp and high-rez video are nice, but as a still camera (the 5D2's basic function) we have every right to expect something better. Hearing top Canon spokesmen say that "there hadn't been any complaints about the 5D autofocus system," so they kept it for the 5D2, was just flat out insulting. Plenty of working photographers had made it known that better AF was a top priority.

Canon could get away with this crap three years ago when the 5D had the "affordable" full frame market all to themselves. The world has changed since then. Canon users/owners should be loudly demanding improvements to match now-current technical capabilities, not trying to defend Canon's marketing scheme.
