From memory of Canon lenses timeline charts, it takes Canon 10-20 years to release a new version of a lens.

I’ve heard a claim that the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS mkII was released now in response to Nikon. Yet, the mkI was almost 10 years old, and some of the new features (e.g. improved Image Stabalizer) were around for a long time.

Nikon’s 14-24mm is better than not only Canon’s 16-35mm mkII, but Canon’s 14mm mkII *prime*, released only a year earlier.

This comes with Sigma’s 2004 release of the 12-24mm zoom.

Those three data items together make me think Canon wouldn’t release a new ultra-zoom before 2014, which is why I put my money on a 2nd hand Sigma 12-24mm.

A full-frame retrofocus 35mm f/1.2L would probably cost over 2 grand and weigh at least a kilo.

I think I’d rather have a 35 f/1.4L IS :-). If you want ultra-narrow DoF then 35mm is not your focal length anyway.
