Eventually, it probably will. Looking at the recent release of the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, once that lens came out at a significant premium over the MkI, retailers started selling the MkI version at or near list price, so used prices actually went UP in parallel.

does anyone think a 50mm 1.4II will drive down the used-market price of the current 50mm 1.4?

I thinks Canon should make a USM, IS 28mm f1.4 lens that is optimized for APS-C sensor. This will be an excellent "standard , all around lens for the ASP_C sensor user. If canon cannot make it as f1.4 , either due to size, weight, performance or price, I will settle for f 2.0.

i can only hope that we get a full-USM, modern 50mm 1.4 update from canon.

the sigma has crappy AF, and the current OEM 50mm 1.4 is unacceptably soft at max ap.

i won't hold my breath, but this is (i must admit) exciting "news".

Canon usually announces lenses in Jan-Feb and in Aug-Sep. Canon has announced 4 lenses a year for 5-6 years.

So, I guess Canon will announce 3 new lenses in Aug-Sep, possibly in Photokina.

Yes, different sensors is what we're talking about for this purpose. If both of them were the same design (including same pixel density), there won't be any extra "reach" :)

How do you like your Sigma 50? What camera are you mounting it to and how well is the autofocus working? Thank you.

$699 for an EF-S-only lens? I can't see it.

Other than that the specifications sound alright. I'd definitely enjoy IS.

I think the 50 1.4 remake is a fabulous idea. It needs to be complimented by a few other lenses though. So right now I would not purchase it.

I'd very much like this rumored 50 1.4 to replace my 35 1.4 as my standard indoor lens. But then I'd need to get something else to get wide at 2.8 or better. 24 1.4 II I'm told is soft to very soft in the corners at anything below 2.8. So in order for the 50 1.4 to work with my shooting style I'd probably need Canon to release either a 14-24 2.8 (hoping it's sharp in the corners like the nikon) or the long- rumored, mythical 24-70 2.8 IS which would probably be better anyway for my style. In this way I get back my wide angle lens and gain IS for low light indoor shots.

Taking their sweet time. We've had one lens announcement and one release. These happened in early January and March respectively. It's been over 6 months since we knew about any new lens releases.
