This and That

Nothing much going on
I’ve received no great rumors over the weekend. I’m sure they’ll heat up soon.

I’ll be emailing some folks tonight to see if there’s any new info.

24-70 f/2.8L IS
Received my first bit of info about such a lens today. It comes from a Canon employee that advised someone to “wait a
bit” before buying the existing version of the lens.

This sort of this can happen from time to time.

1Ds Mark IV
Nothing on this camera, just some bad rumors floating around right now.

More soon.

More Speculation

Big White Lenses
On a personal note, I recalled I ordered some drop-in filters for the big whites a long time ago. In fact, they’ve been on backorder for almost 3 months from Canon Canada.

New filter system in store?

Canon EVIL [CR1]
Received information that someone had see 2 pancake lenses from Canon. A 24mm & 55mm.

I’m sure a small interchangeable lens camera from Canon is in testing, just do not expect it this fall.

I’m abroad
I’m in Ireland now, so keep emailing away. I never stop working.

Canon PowerShot G12 Leaked By CNET

Canon G12 Leak from CNET Asia

We were wrong about the sensor in the G12, makes sense that it’s identical again to the S9x camera.

EOS 60D Coming August 26 [CR3]

Where are the SLR’s?
The embargo on the 60D doesn’t end until August 26, 2010. So that’ll be next Thursday.

No word on what else will be announced with it.

Expect at least 2 lenses.

1Ds Mark IV
I’ve heard nothing about an announcement date for the camera, only that it’ll be around for Photokina.

Big White Lenses
A few people are saying all 4 of the big whites are being replaced. This may be true, but I still believe they’ll be updated in pairs.

Lenses Lenses Lenses

From EOS-Numerique
A thread has shown up on the EOS Numerique forum about what’s coming shortly. I will talk about what’s posted there.

http://www.eos-numerique.com/forums/f11/les-nouveautes-canon-pour-la-rentree-153805/

Here’s what I know so far
As I wrote yesterday, 2 of the big white lenses are going to be replaced. The above link says all 4, however I’m still told it’ll just be 2 at a time.

300 f/2.8L IS II
400 f/2.8L IS II

[CR3] on at least 2 big white lenses getting replacements.

Zooms
The above link points to a 100-300L. I’ve heard a bit about this over the last few weeks.

If I had to guess, it could be an EF 100-300 f/4L IS.  It wouldn’t be 2.8 and I highly doubt it would be variable aperture.

A wide angle zoom is also coming, I’ve heard 16-50 f/4L IS. It may be something different, but I do not see a 2.8 replacement of the 16-35 f/2.8 II.

The 8mm-12mm mentioned in the forum post I’ve heard nothing about.

Like we’ve said in the past, there are 3-4 lenses coming this fall.

I will [CR2] this.

The Bad News
I have heard NOTHING about the following desired lenses.

24-70 f/2.8L IS
If it’s coming, it’s been very well hidden. Not a single source has mentioned anything about it.

50 f/1.4 II
Nothing has come my way in a long time.

August 19 Announcements
The above thread also says there will be announcements tomorrow. To be honest, I’ve received an equal number of yays & nays for camera stuff being announced tomorrow.

More soon

*UPDATE* The Big White Lenses [CR2.5]

*UPDATE*
Do not 100% quote me on which of the 2 big white lenses will be announced. It could be the 300 & 400 or 500& 600. I’m still working that out. The 300 f/2.8L IS seems to be the #1 candidate.

I’m still working on when.

Updated Supertelephotos
I own a lens rental company and buy these big things. I own all the Canon supertelephotos. I was going to buy one more of 2 of the lenses and was told some things.

World Cup
I reported in the past here & here that new Supertelephotos were at the World Cup. We’ve also reported lens hood design changes for the big lenses.

Big White Lenses Being Replaced
300 f/2.8L IS
400 f/2.8L IS
500 f/4L IS
600 f/4L IS

Now what may happen is only 2 of them being replaced at one time. The most likely candidates are the 300 f/2.8L IS & 600 f/4L IS.

What will be upgraded?
The obvious upgrades will be the IS systems and coatings on the elements.

The BIG feature will be significant weight reduction. How much? I can’t say, but that’s what I’m told.

How much will they be?
If you want an ultra sharp out of this world supertelephoto from Canon, just buy any of the current ones. I own them all and they’re great. The new ones will come it AT LEAST 25% more expensive.

When?
This is why it’s [CR2.5], I don’t have a definitive time-frame. I’m told “soon”.

Lens Hood Design
I for one think the current lens hood design is annoying at the best of times. The one thing I do like is that the fastening mechanism is reliable, I have yet to see one break. If they do redesign the hood locking mechanism, lets hope it holds up over time.

What about the 200 f/2L IS & 800 f/5.6L IS?
I’m not sure if either of these are included in the supertelephoto replacement. Outside of perhaps a new hood, I can’t see them included.

400 f/4 DO IS?
I’ve heard nothing about a replacement for this lens.

7D Studio Version Official

Canon 7DSV
I’ve received lots of information about the 7D Studio Version w/Barcode Scanner.

7DSV

This thing started to ship almost a month ago, that’s why I didn’t post about it.

From Canon’s Official Press Release

For wedding and portrait photographers, one of the most enjoyable parts of a project is the actual photographic element with the laborious work starting when the time comes to organize files, edit and ultimately provide the finished product. To help make this process less cumbersome, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announced the launch of a new EOS 7D Studio Version DSLR Camera, ideal for professional school and event photographers which features four levels of “locking” camera controls for studio environments. In addition to the “locking” feature on the new EOS 7D Studio Version, the Company is also introducing a Canon Barcode Solution, which links customer data directly with the image file so that it can be maintained throughout the entire workflow process, ideal for school photographers, forensic and medical photo workflows.

Canon Radio Flash Trigger Patent?

Radio Ga Ga

See USPTO Appl. No. 12/700,098
Photography Bay has uncovered a patent for what appears to be radio based flash triggers from Canon.

It’s an obvious evolution and much needed feature in todays DSLRs.

The patent application tells us that Canon’s proposed wireless flash system is based off of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, which is more commonly known as a wireless standard applied for low-rate wireless personal area networks operating at 2.4GHz, 915MHz and 868MHz. The 802.15.4 standard is the basis for the likes of the ZigBee specification, which these little chip antennas use to garner an impressive range of 300 feet (using the 2.4GHz band).

This is not a whole lot different in concept from the good ole 802.11 WiFi; however, power management, critical latency and cost are key concerns in the 802.15.4 standard, which makes it a seemingly ideal fit for something like TTL flash radio communication.
