1Ds Mark IV & A New “Hybrid Flagship” [CR1]
File this under “I was speaking to….”
“the person said that Canon’s primary focus with the 1Ds Mark IV was per pixel sharpness and dynamic range.”
Expect an announcement “soon”.
Hybrid Flagship
The 2nd part of the same email spoke of “A dream camera for any pro photographer and cinematographer that needs the ultimate image and movie quality in difficult light environment”
The camera has been in testing for a short time now.
Specs:
- A lower mp full frame Sensor
- Dynamic range optimized
- Raw video
- Continuous focus on video mode
- Smaller form factor than 1D series.
CR’s Take
Does that sound too good to be true? I would have said “yes” a year ago, not now though.
If Canon had spent $5 on market research, they would have discovered there is a massive market for a low megapixel/high iso performance professional hybrid DSLR.
Take this with a big grain of salt. However, such a camera is very possible.

A Few 60D Specs [CR2]
A Couple of Specs
Received word today of someone seeing a presentation of a pre-production 60D. The entire spec list was not released to the folks being presented to.
Specs:
18mp (Exact same as the 7D & T2i)
Tilt Screen (No word on size)
“Video Optimized” (I’m going to assume better AF when filming)

I’m told that invites have come from Canon Poland for a private event to show a new “flagship dslr” on August 26, 2010.
I’d love to see an email or scan of an official invite.

Canon Looking at a Medium Format Company?
Bigger!
Received a cryptic email in regards to Canon having some interest in purchasing a medium format camera company. Apparently they’ve moved to the point of actually opening the company’s books.
There was no word on which company that was, but there really aren’t that many of them. There have always been murmurs about Canon moving into the medium format segment. I’m not even sure if it’s a growth market or not, or what use Canon would have with it.
I have been told in the past that Canon had interest in acquiring Pentax, but it fell through. Pentax has now moved into the medium format marketplace with the 645D, the folks in Japan will be paying close attention to its success.
If it is Pentax, I for one would love an orange rebel with a pink lens.

1Ds Mark IV for Photokina [CR1.5]
Is it really?
I’ve been told that a 1Ds Mark IV announcement can be expected for the Canon EXPO & Photokina. Availability of the camera could be some time after (2 months?).
Canon will make a “big splash” this fall with 3 digital SLR’s and a “revolutionary” PowerShot.
Too good to be true?
Steven Alvarez posted that his friend is indeed testing the 1Ds Mark IV.

Yeah, weird rating! I know the source, but they have about a 50% batting average.

Canon Invites to German Journalists [CR1]

Received a bit of info that Canon has invited some journalists in Germany to a press event.
I have no official confirmation of this. If you’re in Germany and have received the invite, please let me know.
That’s the day I get married, maybe Canon can hold off any announcement.

EF 35 f/1.8 & Tales of Backorders [CR2]

A source is nearly positive Canon will be releasing this for Photokina.
70-300 f/4.5-5.6 IS II?
As we reported before, the current version was heavily backordered. A local store has had 3 on order for nearly 2 months. One has been shipped, the other 2 have not yet.
This sort of backorder behavior has lead to replacements in the past.
Other significant backorders?
In Canada, 5D Mark II kits with 24-105 f/4L IS lenses have been backordered for over a month with some retailers.
A lot of retailer info has been coming in globally about 5D Mark II shortages. There could be manufacturing reasons for this, as we expect at least 2 new camera bodies for Photokina and perhaps a 3rd in Q4 2010.
I’ve also had 52mm drop-in filters for supertelephotos on backorder for nearly 2 months. Replacement! :)

50D & SX1 Replacements Next Week?
…. A Canon rep said
The August 11 announcement date is brought up again. This time from a Canon Rep in the southern hemisphere.
“The 50D and SX1 replacements will be announced next week.”

A few more confirmations of the S90 not appearing on new pricing lists in a few countries.
Lenses
No lenses mentioned for next week yet. This makes me think there will be 2 rounds of announcements.

I was just told the S90 has officially reached EOL (End of Life).
August 30/31
I received info that this is a timeframe that a new DSLR would be announced. I wasn’t told which model. Just that it would be as revolutionary as the 5D Mark II was. I was promised better information from this person in the next couple of weeks.
