EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS Review

The Review Has Been Posted
I took the new 70-300L on safari with me and really fell in love with the lens.

I tried to point out a few things that may annoy some people, most things were small issues.

Check out the review.

*Correction*
I updated the review to let you know the Kenko Pro 300 DGX 1.4 teleconverter will work on the lens.

thanks jason

5D Mark III [CR1]

First 5D Mark III Spec List.

  • 28 megapixel
  • 2 Stop Noise Improvement
  • 63-segment metering
  • 1920×1080 30/25/24 frame Video
  • RAW Video
  • CES Announcement

CR’s Take
I posted this because it seems like a rumor that may spread around the web.

It’s highly unlikely Canon will introduce a 5D Mark III at CES.

Canon at CES 2011. A Vague Initial Report.

Something coming
I received some vague information that Canon will announce something beyond point and shoots for CES, which runs from January 6 – January 9 in Las Vegas.

It is a camera of some kind, no word on exactly what.

I have been told there will be no lenses announced with the product.

I hope to have more information soon, and I expect I will.

B&H & Adorama Have the New Teleconverters in Stock

From B&H Photo
B&H and Adorama have the new teleconverters in stock. I have one of each on order.

B&H: Canon EF 1.4x III $499 | Preorder: Canon EF 2.0x III $499

Adorama: Canon EF 1.4x III $499 | Preorder: Canon EF 2.0x III $499

Worth an upgrade?

The Extender EF 1.4x III and Extender EF 2x III have been designed to complement the latest range of L-series lenses, matching their appearance and offering a visible differentiation from previous models. A carefully positioned lens release mechanism also makes it easy to mount the extenders quickly, reducing the time that the camera and lens are exposed to the environment. The extenders offer the exceptional build-quality expected from Canon’s professional products, and are resistant to both dust and water, allowing photographers to use them in extreme shooting conditions.

Canon seems to think so, I do expect performance improvements. Anything to speed up putting on and taking off the converters is very welcomed.

No 1Ds Mark IV in 2011? [CR2]

Really?
I was talking with a regular source and all indications he’s receiving is that there will be no 1Ds Mark IV or replacement of the 1Ds Mark III in 2011.

There is going to be a very big departure in the high end from Canon.

CR’s Take
The 5D Mark II took from the 1Ds3 market in a lot of cases (not all). A replacement of the 5D Mark II would do the same if they kept the status quo for a 1Ds4 upgrade.

I hope to hear more soon.

Tamron Lens Phenomenon Update

First reports of repaired lenses.
The first set of Tamron owners have received lenses back from Tamron correcting the cross-type sensor issue with certain Canon DSLR bodies.

The 17-50 f/2.8 VC was sent in and Tamron’s official statement for the fix was “autofocus adjustment”. This is a bit deceptive, what actually was done was a lens ID change from 37 to 137 (85 f/1.2L II lens ID).

Tamron Japan has not officially admitted that there is an issue. Perhaps this is being done to avoid a mass recall of lenses.

Cost of repair?
For the moment, the lens ID switch is covered under the standard warranty. No word on out of warranty products yet.

The Canon High End [CR2]

1D Mark IV Replacement?
A known source that has been right in the past sent me some info that is nothing like anything I’ve been told before.

It’s claimed the new “1″ series camera in 2011 will be a 1D4 replacement and not a new 1Ds. Full frame and slightly lower megapixels (15). Obvious improvements in ISO performance and other minor tweaks.

A short lived “1″ series camera has only happened once in the past with the 1D Mark IIn.

This also goes along with the notion that the next 1Ds would be a massive departure from what we have now.

5D Mark III
The same person also touched on the 5D Mark III saying it would be slightly higher megapixel than the current 21mp, and offer an AF system in line with the 7D.

When?
I’ve been told a couple of times all SLR announcements from Canon will be in the second half of 2011.

CR’s Take
I’m posting this because it’s from someone that’s been on the ball in the past. However, I’m skeptical about a 1D Mark IV replacement coming that quickly. Hopefully I get more information.

The 5D Mark III is probably easier to predict, I expect better AF, more megapixels and some new features.

Zeiss ZE News [CR3]

What’s coming from Zeiss?
Zeiss will introduce some zooms in 2011 for ZE (Canon) and ZF (Nikon). None of the zooms will go longer than 200mm.

A longer Zeiss prime in the 135mm range will also be announced.

Zeiss 35 f/1.4
Initial reports I’ve received say the lens is awesome. I cannot wait to try it out.
