5D Mark III
Lots of 5D Mark III stuff is coming to the surface now.
Over at DPR a post that was identical to an email I received, it uses the “I was told by insert retailer/rep” that the 5D Mark III would be coming in March. There’s lots of things coming in March from Canon, none of which I think are the 5D Mark III.
Here’s the thing about Canon Reps, if Canon USA or Canon Canada or any other Canon subsidiary tells their reps to deny healthy grass is green according to their NDA, they will do so. I know reps that have slipped up, but they do it by accident, they don’t offer information.
Whenever a Canon rep knows who I am at a trade show, I’m always told me about the 125mp 5D Mark VIII and the G17 with an MF sensor.
RAW Video
NL posted a bit about the 5D Mark III having some form of RAW video that will be editable with DPP. I think the RAW video feature will be talked about until announcement day.
5D Mark II Stock Levels
There’s lots of talk around the planet about depleted 5D Mark II stock. I think this is more because of manufacturing than the discontinuation of a camera. They could sell 5D Mark II’s well into the 5D Mark III’s product cycle. I wouldn’t read into it yet. I have some 5D Mark II’s on order, we’ll see if they show up.
February Announcement
There are no press events officially scheduled yet. The only date I’ve received was a February 22, 2011 announcement of something. With Canon, it’s always possible for multiple announcement dates for various products. PowerShots and SLRs are getting separate billing a lot.
Canon makes lots of money
There’s always tons of criticism of Canon from the photography masses, and that’s ok. One thing you cannot criticize is their ability to make money. A forecasted 26% increase in net income. Growth coming from DSLRs and office equipment.
Here comes Sony
Others have spoken about it, but I still find it worth repeating. Sony has taken Nikon’s #2 spot in the UK for interchangeable lens models. Canon remains #1, but with a falling share.
Mirrorless cameras are playing a big part in this trend, we know Nikon’s is coming… what say you Canon?
Canon Mirrorless
I’ve asked around and no one really has much to say about it. When you sell as many Rebels and G12′s as Canon does, I understand why they aren’t in a rush.
1Ds Mark Squared
Received some information that we talked about many moons ago. The shift of the top end 1D camera to a square sensor.
The information goes on to say Canon has the technology to do 8-10fps with a 35-40mp image file.
3D Returns
We all love to dream about it, and the 3D is making its annual return to the rumor mill.
From NL
- 3D full frame – 18MP
- No built in grip, 1 series ‘style’ build
- 7D/1D focus
- Active focus screen (as per 7D)
- ISO to 102400
- Video as with 7D
Another vote for a smaller pro camera
Along with the above square sensor information, I was told again to expect a new top end camera body. Again, the “smaller body” was mentioned.

PCWorld.in speculation
Canon EOS 5D Mark III
Canon may name the next product in this dSLR series, as either the EOS 6D or the EOS 5D Mark III. This product would succeed the current Canon EOS 5D Mark II. It may offer a 24 Megapixel sensor and dual DIGIC 4 processors. The 3-inch display may be an articulated LCD screen with 1.04 million dots. What is more, it may be touch sensitive, making it the first full-frame camera with such technology.
When it is expected: This model from Canon’s stables is expected to be available before the first half of 2011 ends.

I don’t know how to take this.

Maybe not so crazy
I posted the craziest rumor of the week on Sunday, it didn’t seem at all plausible to me.
One person in particular wrote in saying it may not be that far off. Such a camera was apparently discussed with him/her before Christmas.
Spec List!
- - New small body FF
- - Pro AF (45 point same as Eos 1D MKIV)
- - 16.7 MP
- - 6 FPS (booster with extra batterygrip up to 9fps)
- - ISO 100-12800 (L50 / H102400)
- - Single CF slot
- - Video as Eos 7D
- - Msrp $ 4,399
What I was told was the MSRP was way off, the rest of it was relatively on the mark. A CP+ announcement was unknown, as the source was told it would be announced at the end of February.
5D Mark III / 1Ds Mark IV
As most people know, the 5D Mark II completely killed the 1Ds Mark III sales numbers. The same source explains that Canon will move the 5D Mark III into the territory of flagship resolution camera and the 1D Mark IV/V will be the flagship “pro” body. The 1Ds Mark IV will be something completely different, yes, another person saying it.
CR’s Take
The whole Canon DSLR lineup is due for a big shake up, all of this info points to that. I’m not going to commit to all of this being true, but there’s an awful lot of people saying the same thing.

Coming, but perhaps delayed
Things are a bit chaotic in the lens world of Canon at the moment. The well known issues with manufacturing are probably the biggest reason why.
2011 should see 2 new L primes being announced (other than supertelephotos). It wasn’t mentioned to me which 2 lenses would see updates. The usual suspects are the 35L and 135L and I’ve heard some murmurs of a 50 f/1.2L II coming to market sooner than later.
I think this year is going to be a mess for lens announcements.

New Sunday Feature
Every Sunday I am going to post the craziest “rumor” I’m sent from the previous week for your enjoyment.
I will say about crazy rumors, there was one rumor I was told about that I dismissed. I thought it was loony, and that was the 8-15 f/4L. I was never told fisheye and didn’t think fisheye.
Spec List!
The person writing in stressed this wasn’t the 5D Mark III and to expect an announcement in the next few weeks.

A Long Way off
I was asking around about the new 500mm and 600mm lenses and when they’d be available.
I was told mid to late 2012 at the earliest before anyone would see delivery.
The manufacturing issues at the new lens plant are delaying a lot of things.

Weird
Can you make your 1Ds, Mark II or Mark III reflect a fully gold logo like this one?
I’ve tried, I can’t.

This camera photo came from a photographers facebook profile.
There’s probably a good reason the logo is gold, other than a new camera.

*UPDATE*

It looks like the paint around the “Ds” can come off, as seen above.

Clues about Canon’s Plan?
As we know, a lot is being said about the demise of the 1Ds Mark III. It’s disappearing from stock at stores, from Canon’s own web store and anywhere else you can think of.
So what gives?
I’m told Canon may be quietly letting the 1Ds Mark III sail away into the sunset without a replacement right away. The 5D Mark II cannibalized a lot of the 1Ds3′s sales since it hit the market and became one of the best selling dslrs ever. The people that wanted a 1Ds3 for it’s full frame and build quality have probably already ponied up and bought the thing.
Canon will put larger differences in resolution between the 5D Mark III and 1Ds Mark IV.
I’m told the 5D Mark III will be first and be a slight upgrade in megapixels. 28 seems to be the number I keep hearing.
The big megapixel cameras from Canon or Nikon won’t be until the end of 2011 and into early 2012. Expect a big jump in megapixels above whatever the 5D Mark III turns out to be. 42mp from Nikon, around the same for Canon. None of this is written in stone yet I’m told, Q2 2012 is also a possibility.
CR’s Take
As I said yesterday, I’m cautious about anything 1Ds Mark IV related. This information seems completely plausible to me. Eventually Canon has to unleash a camera that shows their financial muscle in R&D and manufacturing. A 5D Mark III will bring in a boatload of revenue, more than a 1Ds camera ever would. I think we’ll see it first. I have been wrong before though.
I have posted that a new 1D would come in 2011 before a new 1Ds, that could definitely be a stop gap for a full frame pro body. I’m not sure if they solved the issue of not being able to do 10fps with a full frame sensor, 9fps was possible when the 1D Mark IV launched.
However, there is a part of me thinks Canon is still behind the APS-H sensor and thinks there is a market for it.
16-35 f/2-2.8 Patent
PR via egami posted a patent to a lens that I think already exists. It’s exactly the same as the 16-35 f/2.8L II.
This f/2 zoom patent looks different.
