Collaboration with Apple?
I’ve received a few pieces of information about an upcoming collaboration between Apple and Canon. What that collaboration is hasn’t been spelled out to me. It could be with the upcoming Final Cut Pro 8, or maybe something more.
Canon Wants a Medium Format Company?
I’m not sure if stuff I’ve written in the past is getting recycled, but I’ve had a rash of comments recently about Canon’s desire to purchase a medium format company. We’ve heard before they’ve had talks with Hasselblad. It could be more of the same.
Canon Mirrorless
I’ve received emails recently saying we’ll see an EVIL announcement in May. I rate that CR negative 5. The best information I have is that Canon is still in the exploratory stages with a mirrorless solution. There’s no rush to get something to market.

At least we aren’t talking about RAW video!
Codec talk has been running rampant for a while in regards to the 5D Mark III, is most of it fact or wishlist?
According to EOSHD, Canon is working on an MPEG2 based codec for the 5D Mark III. It will have a 4-2-2 color space. Another feature will be a variable bitrate up to 50mbit. The codec will be an improved version from the XF305
The move is motivated by the desire to avoid paying Sony and Panasonic a licensing fee for AVCHD/H.246.
Adobe and Apple have already taken up the format, so applications for native editing will not be a problem.

The end in sight?
A good source says “I’d be surprised to see the next 24-70 not announced in April”. The source does caution things could go awry because of these apparent lens delays.
The source also says the lens will be “with IS”.
I look forward to the end of the speculation on this lens.

EF 24-70 f/2.8L II
CPN magazine lists an “EF 24-70 f/2.8L II”. Typo? Probably. Here’s the picture anyway.
The lens is coming, the patent exists. Makes sense that i’ll arrive with the next full frame announcement from Canon, or shortly after. Who knows with all the Canon lens delays though.

B&H Photo is showing the lens will be arriving in May now, instead of March. Check it out.

Delayed the same as above.
5D Mark III External Recorder?
A tipster said the prototype 5D Mark III or similar body is being tested with an external recorder capable of recording RAW video. He was unsure whether or not it was a Canon accessory or a 3rd party product.
1Ds Mark IV
I’ve received a couple of tips from underwater housing stores about the 1Ds Mark IV. It’s claimed it will be the same housing as the 1Ds Mark III.
Underwater housings have never been a good barometer for upcoming products, so I don’t even link the stores anymore. Everything I’ve been told about the 1Ds Mark IV states it will be an ergonomic change from the 1Ds3.
April Announcements?
Lots of tips saying April is the month for the next announcement. Nikon is looking to be on the same schedule. I will be very wary of April Fools Day.
Indonesia
I’m off to Indonesia on March 24 for a couple of weeks. I may have a fill-in for a few days while I’m away.

Rumors
There’s nothing much going on for the moment. I don’t think much will be happening before April.
I don’t think Canon will introduce anything DSLR related before NAB which takes place April 9, 2011 – April 14, 2011 in Las Vegas. There will be lots of cool third party stuff for Canon HDSLRs announced.
I still expect a 5D3 before a 1Ds4.
New Lens Availability
There’s been a few suggestions that we won’t see the new 300 f/2.8L IS II & 400 f/2.8L IS II in March. I haven’t heard the same about the highly anticipated 8-15 fisheye. This is unconfirmed for the time being.

I apologize for the messy RSS feeds with my live blogging testing. Unfortunately that was the only way for me to test it was working.
Final Cut Pro 8
We’ll see Apple release a new Final Cut for NAB 2011.
