5D Mark III & More Information [CR1]

5D Mark III & More Information [CR1]

Random bits of information
5D Mark III (or similar) announced in the February timeframe.

  • Different sensor than the 1D Mark V
  • It is still not clear whether it will have 26, 28 or 32 megapixel.
  • The sensor tech of the 1D Mark V will be used for future crop bodies e.g. the 7D Mark II.
  • The 7D Mark II is a late 2012 camera.
  • Expect significantly better noise reduction in high ISO modes.
  • Another full frame camera for sports and press this fall?
  • Announcements could be as early as the week of August 29, 2011.

EF 14-24 f/2.8L
I’m told this will be announced in Q1 2012.

CR’s Take
This is a big [CR1], I am posting information that is at least plausible. Grain of salt and all that. Various rumor sites are going to get a lot of stuff coming our way in the next few weeks, sorting it is always a challenge.

1D Mark V Information [CR1]

1D Mark V Information [CR1]

1D Mark V Featureset Rumors
I received an email today outlining additional features of the upcoming 1D Mark V. Please note I do not yet have a [CR3] confirmation of a 1D Mark V being announced in August.

  • The 1D Mark V will have “built-in cropping”. You will be able to choose between full frame (32.4 mp), APS-H (27 mp) and APS-C (21 mp).
  • You can buy additional focusing screens to emulate cropping.
  • The fps are linked to the cropping factor. You can get 8.4 fps with APS-C and only 3.1 fps with full frame.
  • sRAW1 and sRAW2 is possible to speed up fps.
  • Burst mode will give you a max of 10.1 fps depending on the image size and buffer.
  • Expect some video tweaks.
  • RAW video was only enabled for the engineers.
  • Either a 24-70 II (no IS) or a 35 II will be announced with it.
CR’s Take
This is a BIG [CR1], rumor stuff is starting to heat up. I am going to post stuff that has at least ideas that are plausible.

Red Epic with an EF Mount

Red Epic with an EF Mount

Vincent Laforet is at it again

The angle of video of a Canon 600mm f4 EF Lens with a 2X converter on a RED Epic, is roughly one degree. (1 Degree, 45 arcminutes horizontally to be exact.)

The focal length in terms of 35mm is more than 3400mm – not too shabby when you consider this was shot at 4K, 120fps in full RAW on the Epic.

So who cares? Is this just a case of “just because you can…”

The yet to be released EF mount for the RED system fully supports IS, autofocus, digital aperture control, touch to focus, touch to rack focus and distance readout. All you need to convert your RED to EF is a Torx screwdriver.

Vincent shot this film at Mono Lake 45 minutes after sunset until it was dark. He used an ISO range of 800 to 2000.

Visit the Vincent Laforet Blog to see more images of the setup.

5D Mark III, 1D Mark V & 1Ds Mark IV Tidbits

5D Mark III, 1D Mark V & 1Ds Mark IV Tidbits

Announcement(s) Soon
I’ll be posting more of the random stuff I get daily. Things are starting to heat up a bit as announcement season is nearly upon us.

Random Info:

  • Canon Australia has sent CPS management to Singapore for product training. [CR2]
  • Any Canon announcement will come after Nikon’s announcement on August 24, 2011. [CR2]
  • 5D Mark III’s are in the wild and an announcement is imminent [CR1]
  • 1D Mark IV’s are out of stock or hard to come by in certain countries. A retailer in New Zealand actually said they won’t be getting any more. [CR1]
  • 1Ds Mark IV resolution correction, I’m told it will actually be 36mp.
That’s it from today.

Canon 16-35 f/2.8 DO Patent

Canon 16-35 f/2.8 DO Patent

More lens patents
This is an interesting DO patent from Canon. There seems to be a lot of them showing up, but no new DO products in a long while.

I’ve been told the lack of an A+ filterable wide angle from Canon for a full frame camera will be addressed sooner than later. Yes, there’s Zeiss, but most want AF.

Patent Publication No. 2011-145518

  • Release Date 2011.7.28
  • Filing date 2010.1.15

Example 1

  • Focal length f = 16.48 – 24.00 – 33.95 mm
  • Fno = 2.91
  • Half angle of 52.70 – 42.04 – 32.51 °
  • 4 aspherical surfaces
  • Zoom Ratio 2.06
  • Four-group zoom lens plus a negative sign
  • Second lens focusing is performed by Inner Focus
  • Solve various problems using the diffractive optical element
  • The astigmatism of the telephoto kept in order, to increase the refractive index of the positive lens
  • A high refractive index, chromatic aberration occurs
  • Aberration and astigmatism in the center of the telephoto image has a correlation, it is difficult to simultaneously correct
  • Made achromatic diffractive optical element, a positive lens astigmatism correcting high refractive index

1Ds Mark IV/1D Mark V Spec List [CR1]

1Ds Mark IV/1D Mark V Spec List [CR1]

Numbers!
Spec lists have been few and far between for any upcoming DSLR, this is the first one I’ve seen in a while. The commenter didn’t know if this was going to be branded 1D or 1Ds.

Specifications:

  • 32mp CMOS (Full Frame)
  • Evolved 45 point AF system (current 1D4)
  • Dual DIGIC 5
  • CF & SD Slots
  • New Battery
  • 3,7,9 fps
  • ISO Range 50-102,400
  • Ergonomic Changes
  • 100% VF
  • 3.2″ LCD (Highest Resolution Ever)
  • Improved AF in LiveView
  • Unknown Movie Mode and specifications
  • Unknown if there will be a wireless flash commander
  • In camera software feature upgrades

I expect a lot of these in the next month or so.

Announcement Date?
I’ve heard 2 different dates so far. I do expect multiple announcements dates for PowerShot and EOS.

August 18, 2011. I don’t recall the last Canon announcement to happen on a Thursday. Most, if not all are on a Monday/Tuesday depending on where you are on the planet.

August 30, 2011. This would come after Nikon’s announcements.

I don’t see September 6, 2011 as a possibility due to the long September weekend.

5D Mark III & Lenses

5D Mark III & Lenses

Nothing Major
Another known source has spoken up and said a 5D Mark II replacement will be in quarter 1 in 2012. It was also said the line would include a “surprise”.

Lenses
Canon has apparently told some dealers in Europe that the 5D2/24-70 kit will no longer be available.

Signs of a replacement of the 24-70 is starting to show some more signs.

EF 8-15 f/4L
I have been playing with one for a day or two, trying to figure out how to effectively use a fisheye. I’d like a review up by the end of next week.

More soon, been sick.
