EF-S or EF 35 f/1.8? [CR1]

EF-S or EF 35 f/1.8? [CR1]

Another 35mm?
An email not in english came in talking about a slower  35mm that would be launched in the near future.

The lens would be a 35mm f/1.8 with a lower build quality than an “L” lens. However, I am unsure from the communication whether or not the lens would be an EF or EF-S mount.

CRs Take
There has been a recent issue of 35 f/2 stock, however a lot of that can potentially be attributed to manufacturing challenges in Asia.

Powershot Gx? [CR1]

Powershot Gx? [CR1]

Canon PowerShot Gx
So is the next Power “G” series camera going to be departure? From the purported spec list below, that seems to be the case.  There was non mention when a “G” replacement would be announced.

  • 12mp (Larger CMOS Sensor)
  • 6.5x Zoom
  • f/2 The Largest Aperture
  • 1080p HD Video (Upgraded Video Features)
  • Optical VF Removed
  • 3″ Articulating Screen (High Resolution)
  • $600 USD

This will not be a mirrorless camera, but a high end fixed lens PowerShot. The departure has been hinted at previously.

CRs Take
I don’t doubt they’d sell a boatload of higher end, higher IQ PowerShot cameras. There are lots of people that desire a on camera solution with great IQ. The source is new, so I’d get the salt shaker out.

Canon Files a Patent for a Bunch of Lenses.

Canon Files a Patent for a Bunch of Lenses.

All at once!
Canon has filed patents for a bunch of fast aperture telephoto lenses.

We’ve heard a number of times that Canon will update a lot of current lenses in 2012 and beyond. I think the 50 f/1.4 is the one that is in the most dire need of an update. An 85 1.2L III with a faster AF would also be welcomed. I hope they don’t update the 200 f/2L IS, I already love it and I would be forced to love the next one too at $6K+.

  • 50 f/1.4
  • 85 f/1.8
  • 85 f/1.2
  • 100 f/2
  • 135 f/2
  • 200 f/2

7D2, 5D3 and Megapixel Insights

7D2, 5D3 and Megapixel Insights

Some insights
[NL] mentions we’ll be seeing the 7D Mark II as well as a 5D Mark III by the time Photokina 2012 rolls around next September.

They also go on to mention that if Canon does release a higher megapixel full frame camera (30+ mp), it won’t be the 5D Mark III that gets them. The testing of higher megapixel sensors was also mentioned and it’s said all of this will depend on the “market”.

With all that being said, is it being insinuated that the 5D Mark III would get the same or similar sensor to the 18mp one in the 1D X?

The recent price drops of the 5D Mark II (down to $1999 in the US) I don’t think are a direct precursor to an imminent 5D Mark III announcement.

7D Mark II
Absolutely zero information has come my way about a new 7D. What I don’t think will happen is an APS-H 7D. They won’t eliminate the use of EF-S lenses on the body.

I’ve only heard about a 24mp APS-C, and an updated 18mp APS-C sensor. Niether of which there is much information about.

Nikon D4 Specs Revealed? 1D X Has Competition.

Nikon D4 Specs Revealed? 1D X Has Competition.

*DISCLAIMER
Yes, this is Canon Rumors, but a new D4 probably matters to a lot people that require cameras like the D4 and 1D X.

The 1D X to have competition soon?
Nikon Rumors has posted specs of an upcoming D4. They claim it’ll be announced before CES/PMA in January. The 1D X is no longer alone.

Don’t expect a quick to market product, I’m not sure you can even buy XQD cards yet!

  • 16.2 MP
  • 11 fps
  • 100-102,400 native ISO range, expandable to 50 and 204,800
  • CF + XQD memory card slots! That’s right, the Nikon D4 will have the new Compact Flash XQD memory card slot.
  • Compatible with the new Nikon WT-5 wireless transmitter
  • Integrated Ethernet in the camera
  • Face detection/recognition function that will be working in the viewfinder (maybe some type of a hybrid viewfinder? Nikon had several related patents)
  • Improved video, I have no other details on that but my guess is 1080p/30/25/24 and 720p/60/30/25/24 similar to the Nikon D800
  • Uncompressed video out through the HDMI port
  • Ability to assign the two buttons on the front of the camera to smooth aperture control during video recording
  • Improved 51 AF points
  • AF detection range will go down to EV-2.0 (the D3s went to EV -1)
  • Autofocus system: 9 cross-type sensors that are operational up to f/8

An EF 70-200 f/4L IS II in Mid January? [CR1]

An EF 70-200 f/4L IS II in Mid January? [CR1]

The lenses keep on coming
I received some pretty good detail about a new EF 70-200 f/4L IS that may be announced in the next month.

The first version of this lens is terrific, and for a while outperformed the 2.8 IS counterpart (other than light gathering ability).

Some points on the reported new lens.

  • It will include a newer version of the Canon fluorine coating reducing light scatter within the lens.
  • The new coating will drastically increase the scratch resistance on the front element.
  • The lens will be fully metal, besides the zoom and focus rings.
  • The image quality is supposed to be the best as far as Canon zooms go (like version 1 was).
  • Mid January announcement.
We have been told that Canon will be updating a lot of current lenses in 2012.
