Finally Coming?
Received word today that Canon has 2 lenses planned for announcement on January 3, 2012. That’s a week before CES.
The 35 f/1.4L II and the 24-70 f/2.8L II are both mentioned. The source claims there is no IS in the 24-70.
The source has been right about lenses in the past, but I’ll keep it at [CR2] until I hear from others.

From Sigma
I received word that a few lenses are on schedule to be announced in 2012.
Lots of people would welcome some updated fast wide angle primes that dont cost $1500.
Lenses Mentioned
- 24 f/1.8 (Full Frame)
- 35 f/1.8 (Full Frame)
- 300 f/2.8 OS
- 500 f/4.5 OS
It may have been suggested that the 500 could turn out to be an f/4, I had a hard time with translation.
From Tamron
I’m told a new superzoom is on schedule. Something in the 18-300 range. An updated 70-200 f/2.8 VC was mentioned as well as a new macro.

CES (& PMA) is Coming!
The Consumer & Electronics Show takes place in Las Vegas between January 10 – January 13, 2012. This is the first year that PMA will be combined with CES for a full consumer electronics experience.
I’ll be there for a few days to bring the Canon perspective from the show. I’m sure the 1D X and C300 will be front and center. If there is a product announcement before CES, it would probably be in the January 3 – January 5 time period. Canon has previously announced lenses as well as cameras the week before CES.
I hope to get a few interviews set up, if there’s anyone brave enough to talk to me. The ideal interview? a few minutes with Chuck Westfall… real or fake.
CES is obviously a well covered event. However, if there’s something you specifically want covered. Please make a comment in the forum thread associated with this post and I will try to accomodate.

It’s been awhile
I hadn’t heard much about the 5D Mark III for a while, after the excitement surrounding the 1D X and C300, I can understand why.
The information below comes from various sources on the web and in my inbox.
Specs?
Two different pieces of information put the camera above 30mp. I get the idea there is more than one sensor being put through the paces. It will not have a pro AF system. It was suggested by one person that the AF will actually be a lesser version of the 7D autofocus system. The camera would not have a crazy frame per second rating, something in the 3-4fps range like the current 5D Mark II. It will be equipped with the DIGIC 5+ processor and be aimed at high megapixel/high ISO performance. The 5D Mark III will not be the 4K Cinema EOS prototype Canon previously announced was in development. There were no details given about the video functionality of the camera.
Most everyone is saying do not expect an announcement until at least March when the 1D X should be shipping. Announcement dates can always change though. It may depend on what Nikon does with the D800.

5D Mark II @ B&H
The next Rebel
I received some early specs about the coming update to the T3i. We’re told to expect it before CP+ in February.
The camera will probably be a new 24mp APS-C sensor and run a DIGIC 5 processor. The DIGIC 5+ won’t be used.
Expect some standard upgrades in ISO performance, HD movie modes and some creative control updates. The final spec list is not yet finalized.
It was mentioned that Canon may keep the new sensor for a 60D upgrade, with the next Rebel sticking at 18mp.

More aggressive pricing from B&H on Canon gear. They seem to be going beyond the Canon rebate pricing.

Canon Medium Format?
A lot of discussion around the web about whether or not the 1D X is really a unification of the flagship line. A lot of people want that big megapixel studio camera.
[NL] posted an interesting quote from an interview with Canon Japan recently.
While we hear the voices, we want to see what the actual sales numbers will be for the 1D X and so determine how many 10,000s of customers we might be losing if we do not introduce a higher resolution camera and if the projected profitability of a higher resolution 24×36 mm format camera will justify development, marketing, and manufacturing investments , or if there is a sustainable market for the even greater costs of development, marketing, and manufacturing medium format cameras and lenses – an area where we have no internal expertise.
A few people I have spoken to desire a flagship camera that is high megapixel. They would like performance beyond what could be had for $2500 or so in a 5D Mark III.
I haven’t heard of a medium format prototype within Canon, however I have heard in the past that Canon has considered purchasing a medium format company. I’ve personally never understood why they would, they are more than capable of entering the market themselves.
Canon Mirrorless [CR1]
Will Canon target the niche market with any sort of mirrorless camera in the future? That’s what one person told me this week. There’s no interest in the company in releasing an NEX or Nikon 1 kind of mirrorless.
B&H Deal of the day
B&H has the Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II in stock and selling for $2074 until January 7, 2012.

*UPDATE* B&H Replaces The Camera for free.
It turns out that B&H Photo sent Kurtis a new camera on the house.
Sorry Kurtis
I don’t like to be entertained by other peoples mishaps, however I think this is a public service announcement in some ways.
There is a nice lead up to the death of a 5D Mark II. Mother nature is fun.
