5D Mark III & The Rest [CR2]

5D Mark III & The Rest [CR2]

The Next DSLR?
I’m told we’ll be seeing the 5D Mark III announced in October, with delivery shortly there after. I was not given any specs, which is probably a good sign.

We said originally, that the 5D Mark III would come before a 1Ds Mark IV or similar camera. Things appear to have come full circle and negate a lot of what I’ve been told this fall in regards to the 5D3.

Next Announcement Date?
We have the middle of September, possibly September 13-September 15 timeframe for a few more PowerShots. Some folks don’t read the site all that well and have posted other dates quoting us.

We should see the S95 & SX30 successors.

G13? We have heard absolutely nothing about a new G camera. It’s genrally on a 1 year product cycle, which would make it due for replacement any day now.

*BUSTED* 1D Mark V Spec List [CR1]

*Busted*
Another spec list torn apart by the community. The crop factors are off to a lot of people. APS-C isn’t 1/1.6.

Received 8 spec lists today! I expect 1.6x more tomorrow.

1D Mark V
A new claimed spec list of the upcoming 1D Mark 5.

We’re still getting conflicting 1Ds Mark IV & 1D Mark V model names. I’m still not sure what the new flagship will be called.

1Ds Mark IV & 24-70 II in 2 Weeks?

1Ds Mark IV & 24-70 II in 2 Weeks?

New Stuff?
I received a couple of emails today saying both the 1Ds Mark IV and 24-70 would be arriving in two weeks. This will be before the IFA event in Berlin.

1Ds Mark IV
The 1Ds Mark IV briefly appeared on Canon’s official web site. You can check that out at Photography Bay.

Still Quiet
I have to admit, all is still pretty quiet on the rumor front. One person has suggested we may get up to 3 different announcement dates in 2011. One for PowerShot, one for a flagship DSLR  and another lens announcement.

There has been absolutely nothing saying a 5D Mark III would be announced in 2011. Still a 2012 Q1 product in a lot of peoples eyes.

Quiet at CR
I’ve been away for a few days making sure my marriage remains intact. :)

*UPDATE* This & That

*UPDATE* This & That

I received a price list from a German dealer today, omitted on the price list was the 1Ds Mark III and 1D Mark IV. The dealer is a pro dealer.

Canon Australia bug or more?
The 5D Mark II is listed twice on the Canon Australia web site, it wasn’t like this a little while ago. A placeholder or a mistake?

*UPDATE* It was pointed out to me that if you click the second 5D Mark II link, the URL says “6D” at the end. *thanks Mike*

Nothing else too crazy today.

A Breakdown of Rumors

A Breakdown of Rumors

Opinion
Below is an update of the current state of rumors surrounding camera bodies. Most of what’s below is opinion, or clarification of what’s going on.

1Ds Mark IV
I was told a long time ago that a 1Ds Mark IV (or similar) camera would not arrive until late 2011 or early 2012 and would be 40+ megapixels. It would be a “big departure” from the current 1Ds line.

There’s been no information on the line that I’d call factual yet, the information I have been told seems to lead to a new type of camera on top of the Canon lineup.

1D Mark V
We’ve heard a lot about the amalgamation of the 1D/1Ds line over the years. It’s been a lot stronger in the last 6 months. It was over 6 months ago that I was first told a new 1D would arrive before any 1Ds replacement.

I personally think most spec lists recently have been wish lists more than fact, however I post them anyway just in case. I suspect we’ll have better information in the coming week or so.

All signs point to this camera, more than any other.

5D Mark III
Everything I get now says it’s a 2012 camera. Most likely in the February timeframe.

There’s a lot of rumblings about the line splitting into 2 models, nothing concrete though. If this camera was coming this month, I believe we’d hear a lot more about it.

5D Mark III, 1D Mark V & 1Ds Mark IV Tidbits

5D Mark III, 1D Mark V & 1Ds Mark IV Tidbits

Announcement(s) Soon
I’ll be posting more of the random stuff I get daily. Things are starting to heat up a bit as announcement season is nearly upon us.

Random Info:

  • Canon Australia has sent CPS management to Singapore for product training. [CR2]
  • Any Canon announcement will come after Nikon’s announcement on August 24, 2011. [CR2]
  • 5D Mark III’s are in the wild and an announcement is imminent [CR1]
  • 1D Mark IV’s are out of stock or hard to come by in certain countries. A retailer in New Zealand actually said they won’t be getting any more. [CR1]
  • 1Ds Mark IV resolution correction, I’m told it will actually be 36mp.
That’s it from today.

1Ds Mark IV/1D Mark V Spec List [CR1]

1Ds Mark IV/1D Mark V Spec List [CR1]

Numbers!
Spec lists have been few and far between for any upcoming DSLR, this is the first one I’ve seen in a while. The commenter didn’t know if this was going to be branded 1D or 1Ds.

Specifications:

  • 32mp CMOS (Full Frame)
  • Evolved 45 point AF system (current 1D4)
  • Dual DIGIC 5
  • CF & SD Slots
  • New Battery
  • 3,7,9 fps
  • ISO Range 50-102,400
  • Ergonomic Changes
  • 100% VF
  • 3.2″ LCD (Highest Resolution Ever)
  • Improved AF in LiveView
  • Unknown Movie Mode and specifications
  • Unknown if there will be a wireless flash commander
  • In camera software feature upgrades

I expect a lot of these in the next month or so.

Announcement Date?
I’ve heard 2 different dates so far. I do expect multiple announcements dates for PowerShot and EOS.

August 18, 2011. I don’t recall the last Canon announcement to happen on a Thursday. Most, if not all are on a Monday/Tuesday depending on where you are on the planet.

August 30, 2011. This would come after Nikon’s announcements.

I don’t see September 6, 2011 as a possibility due to the long September weekend.

1Ds Mark IV Dimensions Outed?

A little thing, but a thing.
Did the folks at Gigapan out the dimensions of an upcoming 1Ds Mark IV?

You can check out the page for yourself over at Gigapan. The numbers are width, height, depth and mass.

Thanks Victor

1Ds Mark III Has Left Canada

1Ds Mark III Has Left Canada

Maybe it was the heatwave?
A few people have pointed out that the 1Ds Mark III is no longer listed on the Canon Canada web site. It has been moved to the archived products section.

Big news? Not really, but we’re starting to get to announcement time.

The camera is still listed on the Canon USA web site.

The Future of the 1Ds & 5D Lines [CR2]

The Future of the 1Ds & 5D Lines [CR2]

Happiness coming?
I’m told there will be a shakeup in the Canon lineup by the end of 2011.

1Ds Series
We’ve talked about the amalgamation of the 1D and 1Ds line in the past, the next 1Ds may prove to make that talk a reality. I’m told that there will be no more 1D after the next 1Ds.

Does that mean the next 1Ds will do what the current 1D does? Or will the 1D Mark IV remain current until a 1Ds Mark V? I’m unsure at the moment.

It was also suggested APS-H in the EOS line is finished.

“5D” Series
I call it “series” due to the suggestion of a split in the 5D lineup.

A 5D Mark III with advanced video features and a 5D Mark III for stills?

Canon has yet to directly monetize video capabilities in DSLRs. Yes, the 5D2 is a bigtime video performer, but the camera wouldn’t cost less if it didn’t shoot video. If Canon does away with the 1D line of cameras, there will be a price hole that a video feature rich camera could fit into.

CR’s Take
All plausible and I’m sure I will hear a lot more about these ideas. It doesn’t make sense in my mind to have 2 EOS-1 bodies in the lineup, the number of these they sell compared to the 5D Mark II is minuscule.

I wonder about technology though, can you offer a 9fps+ capability in a 30+mp camera? There’s lots of technical people that know better than I do.

Splitting the “5″ series camera for stills and video has been asked for by a lot of still photographers who don’t care about video. You won’t see a 5D Mark III still camera with basic video features costing less than the current 5D Mark II, but a 5D Mark III with advanced video features will surely attract a lot of buyers even if it’s at a premium.

I’m willing to wager Canon could sell a lot more 5D Mark III “video editions” than 1D Mark Vs.
