I’m told there will be a shakeup in the Canon lineup by the end of 2011.
We’ve talked about the amalgamation of the 1D and 1Ds line in the past, the next 1Ds may prove to make that talk a reality. I’m told that there will be no more 1D after the next 1Ds.
Does that mean the next 1Ds will do what the current 1D does? Or will the 1D Mark IV remain current until a 1Ds Mark V? I’m unsure at the moment.
It was also suggested APS-H in the EOS line is finished.
I call it “series” due to the suggestion of a split in the 5D lineup.
A 5D Mark III with advanced video features and a 5D Mark III for stills?
Canon has yet to directly monetize video capabilities in DSLRs. Yes, the 5D2 is a bigtime video performer, but the camera wouldn’t cost less if it didn’t shoot video. If Canon does away with the 1D line of cameras, there will be a price hole that a video feature rich camera could fit into.
All plausible and I’m sure I will hear a lot more about these ideas. It doesn’t make sense in my mind to have 2 EOS-1 bodies in the lineup, the number of these they sell compared to the 5D Mark II is minuscule.
I wonder about technology though, can you offer a 9fps+ capability in a 30+mp camera? There’s lots of technical people that know better than I do.
Splitting the “5” series camera for stills and video has been asked for by a lot of still photographers who don’t care about video. You won’t see a 5D Mark III still camera with basic video features costing less than the current 5D Mark II, but a 5D Mark III with advanced video features will surely attract a lot of buyers even if it’s at a premium.
I’m willing to wager Canon could sell a lot more 5D Mark III “video editions” than 1D Mark Vs.
1Ds Mark IV before 5D Mark III?
We’re told August will be a major announcement month. The 1Ds Mark III replacement and 3 lenses will be announced. No detail into what lenses.
5D Mark III to follow soon after according to a few folks.
It probably won’t be until July when we started getting solid stuff with specs and a clearer picture of what’s coming down the immediate pipeline.
Not until well into 2012 at the earliest. You can buy it, it’s a great camera.
Is 37mp enough?
This is the first bit of info I’ve received about a 1Ds Mark IV in a while.
All that was said is the next camera would be 37 megapixels and we’ll see it “soon”.
The best source I’ve had about a 1Ds replacement has said it would be over 40mp and come in late 2011 or early 2012. Nikon would also be doing a 40+ megapixel camera.
I have no doubt the next Canon flagship will be a revolutionary product.
DPR Rumor Fun
[NL] posted a link to a fun DPR rumor. I don’t post them often, but I’ve heard similar sort of stuff previously.
heard from canon themselves september release full frame 28mp, 10fps, digic v, new auto focus, 1.3 crop mode. 1ds replacement is into medium format around 42mp in a more compact body to competition set for end of year with 5dIII at 24.1mp and 7 fps
Lots of variables.
There is lots of stuff flooding in about the 5D3, 1Ds4 and 1D5.
1D Mark V
It’s been said before, but a new 1D in 2011. Announced in the June/July timeframe. Full frame this time around.
5D Mark III
I received 2 different announcement dates. September timeframe and in the 28mp range from a decent source and 30mp and June from an unknown source.
1Ds Mark IV
Another person in the camp of the 1Ds4 being in 2012. 40+ mp and announced in very late 2011 or early 2012. The gist of the comment was the “1Ds” moniker will be discontinued.
Stuff is starting to flow in again, there will be some truths buried in all of it. A camera announcement of some kind is on the near horizon. As always, I’ll keep digging.
It’s been suggested Canon has 3 DSLRs to announce in 2011.
1Ds Mark IV, 5D Mark III and ????. We’ve been told previously that a new 1D would arrive before the year is out. There have also been some 7D Mark II rumblings around the web.
I can get behind 2 new DSLRs in 2011, I don’t see 3 after all that’s gone on in Japan. Unless it’s a late 2011 announcement with a 2012 delivery.
A new timetable?
Comments from Australia [NL].
- The 5D Mark III will come at least 6 months after the 1Ds replacement. If a 1Ds is announced in April, that would put a 5D3 in the Oct 2011 timeframe. That would be just over 3 years since the 5D Mark II
- The EF-S line of lenses are not high on the list of priorities at Canon.
- “L” lenses and the development of them are whats needed to get the most out of the 18mp crop sensors.
- Australia could expect price drops in April to combat the grey market.
I will note, I have not yet heard from the “2012 for the 1Ds replacement” folks in a while.
Speculation starts up again
Over at NL, Keith was given some information at the focus show in UK about the upcoming 1Ds4. He was told he wouldn’t have to wait long and it would precede a 5D Mark III.
It is noted the source could have been fed a line to keep people guessing.
I personally haven’t heard anything different than the late 2011/early 2012 I’ve been told in the past.
EF 24-70 f/2.8L II
CPN magazine lists an “EF 24-70 f/2.8L II”. Typo? Probably. Here’s the picture anyway.
The lens is coming, the patent exists. Makes sense that i’ll arrive with the next full frame announcement from Canon, or shortly after. Who knows with all the Canon lens delays though.
EF 8-15 f/4L Fisheye Delayed Again?
B&H Photo is showing the lens will be arriving in May now, instead of March. Check it out.
EF 400 f/2.8L IS II
Delayed the same as above.
5D Mark III External Recorder?
A tipster said the prototype 5D Mark III or similar body is being tested with an external recorder capable of recording RAW video. He was unsure whether or not it was a Canon accessory or a 3rd party product.
1Ds Mark IV
I’ve received a couple of tips from underwater housing stores about the 1Ds Mark IV. It’s claimed it will be the same housing as the 1Ds Mark III.
Underwater housings have never been a good barometer for upcoming products, so I don’t even link the stores anymore. Everything I’ve been told about the 1Ds Mark IV states it will be an ergonomic change from the 1Ds3.
Lots of tips saying April is the month for the next announcement. Nikon is looking to be on the same schedule. I will be very wary of April Fools Day.
I’m off to Indonesia on March 24 for a couple of weeks. I may have a fill-in for a few days while I’m away.
A few people have told me there will be nothing on March 1 as far as DSLR’s go. April is going to be the announcement month. They were told the same thing at NL via Thom Hogan.
A suggestion of a redo of the 18-200 already. This time with USM. Big grain of salt here, though I don’t think Canon’s version of this lens sells as well as Nikons.
5D Mark III
More people saying to expect a 5D Mark III before a 1Ds Mark IV.
“No new system camera” in 2011. I’m going to assume a mirrorless solution is what was being talked about.
