New 1D & 1Ds in 2009? New “G” Thinking?

From DSLR Magazine

***This is a Google Translation. The grammar and spelling may be poor***

As published in our of our April 23, Canon shall, before the end of the year 2009, two new high-end professional models.

Without making estimarr their names, the first model will be presented in August, and will be “reporting”, ie, fast, and probably with a smaller sensor size of 24 x 36 mm.
The second model, by pure logic, is an evolution of the EOS-1Ds Mark III, and imagine what the issue is offered plus. Expectations are more megapixels, Canon continues as “focused” on making the competition a professional medium format cameras. Perhaps what most potential users expect the system-EOS is that for once the new cameras do not give serious problems from the outset.

In another vein, it seems that again a little sanity into the minds of some designers, and thus is only known to the future development or alternative to the current G10, offers a more sensible number of megapixels, with a view to higher image quality. Staying around the 9-megapixel, maybe you could do that, for example, the noise does not make an appearance as early as in the current G10.

Wait and see.

Our take
All signs seem to be pointing to a fall launch of the 1D Mark IV.

I have conflicting reports about the 1Ds. I’ve been told not to expect that until 2010. It will be priced in the D3x launch price range.

Canon is definitely developing a higher end compact based on CMOS technology. There is a good chance we’ll be seeing a larger sensored compact for the Christmas season.

1D Release 2010 Update

March 8th, 2009 | 24 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark X, Canon 1Ds Mark X

Spoke to someone in the know
He feels there’s a strong possibility the camera will be delayed until well into 2010.

He spoke of “a lot of Canon shooters still using 1D Mark IIn’s. Not by choice, but because their newspaper/agency didn’t buy new cameras. The others using Mark III’s don’t see their companies springing for new cameras anytime in the near or distant future. The D3 has sold well, but hasn’t made a massive inroad into the pro world. There’s been some switchers, but not as many as the internet community thinks. This is at least true in the areas of the planet I shoot”

He also said “this might be a good time to delay the release and concentrate on merging the 1D/1Ds line instead. If Canon wants to save R&D and manufacturing costs, this would sure be a good way to do it.”.

There’s going to be tons of opinion on this one, but both Canon and Nikon and the rest are changing strategies on the fly with the current situation around the globe.

EOS-1D Mark IV in 2010? [CR2]

March 8th, 2009 | 16 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark X, Canon 1Ds Mark X

Not the greatest thing to hear
An email I received has told me not to expect a new 1D camera until the 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2010. The latest fixes for the 1D series cameras is to help the pros and make a few extra sales for the Olympics.

The email goes on to explain the financial state of newspapers and news agencies around the globe. There isn’t going to be a lot of extra cash around to buy new cameras over the next while.

It’s sobering read to say the least and I can see the logic in it. Enthusiasts don’t drive the sales of 1D series cameras, a newspaper buying 20-30 of them at one times does.

1Ds Replaced Before 1D? [CR1]

February 13th, 2009 | 2 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark X, Canon 1Ds Mark X

Dell know something?
Apparently someone tried to lease a 1Ds Mark III from Dell and were told it was at the end of its product life.

From Northlight: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk

I’m guessing something was lost in translation. I could see them with stock of a 1Ds Mark II still.

PMA 2009 Predictions [CR3]

All predictions are based on rumors I have receivedPMA 2009
So what is Canon giving us next week? A lot of people want the world, unfortunately I don’t see it happening.

So what will be launched?

DSLR
Canon Rebel 500D

mp: 15.1
ISO:
100-3200
Proc:
DIGIC IV
LCD:
3″ VGA LCD
crop:
1.6
FPS:
3.5
AF:
9 Point AF
AF: Face Detection
Battery: LP-E5
Feature: LiveView
Feature: Movie Mode w/contrast detect AF

Possibly a jogwheel added to the body.

What’s not coming?
We will not see a new 1 series body. End of 2009 perhaps? It’s been suggested it could be early 2010 before we do.

As pointed out by a reader, 2010 is a winter Olympic year as well as the World Cup. There SHOULD be a new 1D for those events.

Lenses
I think the community is more interested in what lenses are rolling down the pipe. I’ll put the rumors in order of likelyhood.

Most Likely
EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM
- We’ve seen the 50L launched and upgrades to the 14mm and 24mm L’s. This is a logical next step.

TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II
- It’s generally accepted the current lens has been discontinued. I reported it could be f/2.8, I think it’s more likely to be 3.5 because of design limitations.

Don’t be shocked if a 2nd focal length Tilt-Shift is launched.

Possible
EF 100-400 f/4-5.6L II IS
- The Canon community wants this lens pretty badly. I just don’t think it’s coming. Kinda hope I’m wrong.

EF 24-70 f/2.8L II IS
- Possibly the most sought after lens Canonites are lusting after. Match Nikon’s optics and add IS? You’d have a massive sales success. It almost wouldn’t matter what it cost.

EF 50 f/1.4 II
- Heard various reports about low stock of this lens. A couple of places have said they can’t get them anymore. I’ve heard nothing concrete, nor would I really understand replacing this lens at the present time. Possible that they’ll just dump it and replace it with an EF-S 35? I’ve heard that theory before.

One or two of the big white lenses gets redone. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the 300 and 400’s get version II’s. However, that’s more likely to happen in 2010.

Not happening
EF 17-40 f/4L II
- I don’t think Canon needs to replace this hot selling lens just yet, there are too many other lenses that people want follow-ups to.

EF 150 f/2.8L IS Macro
- I never reported on this lens because it seemed way far fetched. It makes sense to make a lens like this, I just don’t think now is the time for it.

EF 24-105 f/4L II IS
- There’s bee murmurs about this lens for a year or so, nothing substantial has come of it yet. I think the current one sticks around for  a while. People would go crazy if they upgraded this and left the 24-70 alone.

From Left Field
A new wide angle prime in the 17mm-21mm range.
- There’s been a few people around the web talking about such a thing. Even a comment on this site. It’s a great idea, nothing concrete.

EF-S Lenses
- I’ve received no information about a new EF-S lens at this time. Will Canon suprise and follow what Nikon just did with a new 35 for crop cameras? Possible.

Flashes
250EX
- I think a new small flash makes a ton of sense for Canon. You put flash shoes on the G, S and SX cameras, and don’t give the people a viable option for a small flash that can bounce? Seems poorly thought out to me. Nikon has one, why doesn’t Canon?

700EX
- I reported the possibility of a higher end flash from Canon. I think it’s out there and more likely to be launched with a 1 series camera.

PowerShots
Expect the following PowerShots to be replaced.

SD1100 IS
SD890 IS
SD770 IS
SD790 IS
A580
A590 IS

Expect more of the same type of upgrades from Canon for the above cameras. I’m not sure we’ll see a direct replacement of either the 580 or 590.

We’ve received a bunch of information about a waterproof/shockproof camera finally being launched. There’s also been a bit of information about a possible new CMOS camera being launched at PMA.

Canon have any surprises in store?
If they do, they’ve hid it extremely well. I don’t think this is the time for Canon to pull a rabbit out of a hat. We all hope I’m wrong with that assessment!

1D Mark IIIn Gaining Steam & EOS-1 Merger [CR2]

January 29th, 2009 | 12 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark X, Canon 1Ds Mark X

2009 is a possibility
I’ve been told from two sources that a 1D Mark IIIn is a definite possibility. Most people at Canon feel the AF system is fine, as does a large percentage of owners. An improved LCD, Buffer and possibly a movie mode could be added to the 1D3n.

I was told there was a newspaper that ordered 20+ 1D3 bodies and attempted to cancel the order at the height of the AF controversy. Canon shipped them 1/3 of the order to test the cameras out. A month later the newspaper requested the rest of the order and called them the “best cameras it had ever owned”. The camera has also been selling very well for the last 6-8 months.

Why no 1D4?!
As been talked about in the past, there is a murmur that Canon could be merging the EOS-1 line in Q4 2010. The motivation to lower production costs by manufacturing one camera. I think most people would agree it would be a good move. I’m not sure exactly how much money Canon could save having one body.

EOS-3D
I know some people are thinking it, I’ve never been sent any credible information about such a camera.

EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS not imminent [CR2]

December 29th, 2008 | 20 Comments | Posted in Canon 1Ds Mark X, Canon Lenses

From the same source as the 100-400
Canon has no imminent plans for an update to the 24-70. Canon has 5-6 lenses in queue for an update beforehand. There is a small chance you could see the lens at the same time as the 1Ds update in late 2009/early 2010.

One new lens that could be coming is a 500 f/5.6L IS. That would all but assure the end of the 400 f/5.6L. There is a market of baby boomers that are eating up higher end camera gear. Such a lens would be a sales monster according to a lot of people at Canon.

Ireland
Obviously I arrived alive. Working on getting this mobile broadband USB modem working, it doesn’t like Vista 64. That should get sorted so I can post a bit more often.

EOS-1 Ds Mark X

December 21st, 2008 | 16 Comments | Posted in Canon 1Ds Mark X

Some ideals of specs out there
I’ve read some various things around the web about the next incarnation of the 1Ds line. Some stuff is from conversations I’ve had as well.

mp: 28-38
proc: Dual DIGIC V 16bit?
LCD: 3″-3.5″
FPS (Still): 5-7
FPS: (Movie): Variable, 1-120fps.
AF: A new 45 point system
Feature: WiFi
Feature: GPS

I’m not sure Canon cares much about WiFi and GPS in camera bodies. I wouldn’t hate having wifi, I might use it. I have no clue why I’d want GPS in a camera though, Google Earth applications aside!

I’ll be weighing closer to its release. I have it penciled for launch in the first half of 2010.

1D & 1Ds Updates in 2009 [CR3]

November 20th, 2008 | 29 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark X, Canon 1Ds Mark X

What’s going on?
I’ve been asking a few people on their thoughts about the chances of seeing new pro bodies in 2009. The general consensus has been that we might see a 1D near the end of 2009 and will not see a new 1Ds until 2010.

1D
Since the sub mirror fix, the 1D has been selling relatively well. Obviously not as well as Canon hoped before the release. People have had very good experiences with the camera and the positive press from users has helped with a resurgence of sales.

1Ds
It has sold about as well as planned. It’s a high margin camera with a price tag that probably won’t be staying stable through 2009. You can expect solid price drops. It’s a great camera, with amazing resolving power that impresses anyone that uses it. Like the 1D, it’s just missing the “sexiness” of the D3… whatever that means.

Nikon D3/D3x
It appears Nikon will be launching a 24mp version of the D3 on the 1st of December if our friend at Nikon Rumors is correct. This will be sure to cause a lot of Canonites to become quite angry and green. I can almost see the forum threads now!

2009 isn’t going to be Canon’s year of “wow”(sorry Microsoft) unless you want a new Rebel or a 60D. So sit tight, and enjoy making great images with your currect EOS-1’s… I will be.
