A Canon Roadmap? & CR Rating Changes [CR1]

A Note about CR ratings
I changed the rating system and how it is used on the site now.

Check the graphic at the top for the new rating system. I think this is a better and more accurate way of rating stuff. I hope you agree. The old way just wasnt working.

This was the idea of a reader. Thanks!

Canon Roadmap [CR1]
I received an email outlining a Canon Roadmap

Quote:
Canon is going to put all cameras in the xD-line.

1D/1Ds for pros
3D (1D Class for semi-pros)
5D (1Ds Class for semi-pros)

7D (70D) and 9D (600D) for hobby photographers.

There will be no 70D, 600D or 3000D. The 2000D is planned for this June/July. (15.1mpx, 960p video @ 30fps, articulating screen and much cheaper than the Nikon one ;)

CR’s Tak
This seems more like a wishlist of camera models. I think there are too many. The 2000D also appears to be overspecced with the little bit of information. I’d have to see more.

An unlikely roadmap, but I passed it on anyway. Stranger things have happened.

Canon T1/2000D June? [CR2]

Rebel T1
We will see a Rebel XS replacement announced in June. I was told the current XS will remain current while the XSi will be discontinued over the summer.

We’ll still have 3 Rebels for Christmas. The XS could reach the $400 price point. I still think that’s a little unrealistic.

The T1 will not have a movie mode. It’ll basically be a rebadged XSi.

Lenses?
Not likely before the fall.

2000D in May?

Canon EOS Rebel XS (1000D)

Coming up on one year
The 2000D will be a year old come June, will Canon be releasing a new one?

Northlight points out the Aussie PMA being in June, so perhaps a May announcement?

2000D? I havent heard anything about it. I think Canon may just keep the 1000D around through to Christmas. A $399-$499 dslr perhaps?

Nikon has discontinued the D40, so there’s a hole in the really cheap SLR segment from the big 2. I’ll assume that the D60 will be the new cheapy when Nikon makes their announcements on the 14th of April.

I haven’t seen any imminent discontinuation of the XSi or XS yet. I’ll have to keep an eye on price sheets.

I admit I laughed at Sony for having 3 entry level cameras, but here we are with 3 Rebels. I think at their current price points, they’ll sell a lot of each of them.

The Next Rebels [CR3]

A tidbit of info
Canon is looking to expand their entry level line of cameras. Nikon has grabbed a lot of market share with theirs, as has Sony.

Some features being considered:

Articulating LCD on one model
Movie Mode with AF
A far more consumer friendly liveview mode.
Inbody IS does exist in Canon R&D labs

There is little chance of adding a 3rd Rebel, but they will continue to develop 2 different models

Announcement in February? [CR3]

February 10, 2009?
I received some info today that Canon is planning their next announcements on February 10, 2009.

SLR’s being announced:
1D Mark IV (won’t be given the “4/IV”moniker)
Rebel XSi Replacement
Rebel XS Replacement

*UPDATE* As always with Canon, there’s a chance these cameras will be split into 2 different days of announcements. Ala the 50D and 5D2.

Lenses
There will be 2 lens announcements. One of them will not be the 35L, that’s being held for the 1Ds4 launch in the fall.

The 40D will also be discontinued by this time and the 50D will come in around the $1000 mark. This will again leave a gaping price point in Canon’s lineup. The source didn’t say there would be a camera added to the lineup beyond the replacements, It just looks like there could be…. again.

One thing that could determine Canon’s direction with product announcement is how well this Christmas season goes and how the economics of the planet are doing. A model or two could be held off until Christmas 2009.
