Canon Rebel XS / 1000D

May 14th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon 450D

Is there a new Rebel in the pipeline for Christmas? With Nikon dropping prices on the D40 to below some P&S's, and Pentax readying a replacement to the K100D (apparently the K200D isn't it.. so says a salesrep) that will cost about $14, it only makes sense that Canon will look to upgrade the XT to something a little more appealing.

All this came about with a leaked model name in Canon's latest version of DPP.

What are the specs? who knows? I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the XT being shown the door.

Canon Rebel XSi availability

April 3rd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Canon 450D

There's a store in Owen Sound, Ontario called Foto Art that currently has one XSi left that is available for sale. $999 retail price with the lens.

Just an FYI if they're hard to come by where you are.

*Disclaimer… no I'm not paid by Foto Art! Just Google Adsense :)

Rebel XSi

I played with a Rebel XSi yesterday.

Things I liked cosmetically.

- Seemed to feel bigger in my hands that the previous 2 Rebels.
* for an entry level camera. It feels a lot better than the Nikon D60 & Sony Alpha 200 in your hands if you have big ones such as myself. I still think the Pentax K200 feels the best.
- Good button placement. i.e. the ISO button.
- Nice VF for a Rebel.
- New grip material
- Red striped strap =D
- The menu system
- The camera setting display is easy to read.
- The IS lens seems to focus fairly quickly.

Things I didn't like.

- New battery. Doesn't appear it'll work on any current universal chargers either.
- Contrast AF in LV isn't great.
- Flash (at least one the one I used) popped up a bit aggressively.

None of this has anything to do with image quality, I didn't have the time for that. The 2 at the store here were both already sold or I may have done some more with it.

Canon Rebel XSi Shipments will start soon

I have been informed that Rebel XSi shipments could begin this week.

Canon EOS 450D (XSi)

Here it is.

I did fairly well with my predictions. I'm a bit bummed there isn't a movie mode. The camera will be shipping in April.

The updates appear good, it makes the Sony Alpha 200 look ancient already.

The images will tell us more in due time.

A few things…
1. Does saying “XSi” seem weird to anyone else? “excess eye”… it's probably just me.

2. This new Rebel has contrast detect AF in live view mode. Here's hoping there is a firmware update for the 40D.

3. What is “Auto Lighting Optimiser”? A version of Sony's DRO?

4. There's a new battery form factor for the camera, which probably means a new battery grip is coming.

5. The switch to SD is a good move by Canon, i hope it continues into other models.

6. Adding an ISO button is long overdue, as is spot metering.

7. PRINT BUTTON LIVES ON!

2 New “Entry Level Cameras”

I received an email from a new source in regards to what is coming at PMA. He says he's pretty confident there will be 2 new entry level cameras announced at PMA.

The new Rebel is an obvious one, but what about the 2nd? Will it be something below the rebel or a new entry level FF camera? No one appears to be too sure about that.
