It’s Over, The EOS 5D Mark II Officially Discontinued

Good-bye old friend
Canon has officially discontinued the EOS 5D Mark II. Quite possibly the most popular and influential DSLR in history.

Some stock is still out there, but it won’t last for long.

Big Canon EOS 5D Mark II Price Drop Coming

Big Canon EOS 5D Mark II Price Drop Coming

Save a lot
I’ve been told by a couple of people that the Canon EOS 5D Mark II will see a big price drop this coming week in the USA, we should see it in other countries as well. We’re told the new price will be $1699 USD for the body until they’re all gone, which won’t take too long I don’t think.

Keep an eye here and we’ll post when the new price takes effect.

The 5D Mark II: Happy 4th Anniversary!

The 5D Mark II: Happy 4th Anniversary!

The 5D Mark II
Mitch at Planet5D reminded us that today marks the 4th anniversary of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, quite possibly the most important and successful DSLR Canon or anyone else has ever released. We already know it changed the video world forever, but it also changed the still photography world. How many people do you know that the 5D Mark II was their first DSLR? I used to work in retail and saw it a lot.

Do you remember the first time you saw “Reverie“? I do, I was floored. I think the entire world’s mouth was collectively open in awe.

Sales wise, I remember a huge retailer in Canada telling me that in 2009 the 5D Mark II was 25% of their TOTAL revenue for the year. Canon sold so many of these cameras, and they continue to sell today… 4 years on!

The 5D Mark II was also my first big camera launch here at Canon Rumors, and I completely blew it! I was away in Niagara Falls with my inlaws from Ireland and ignored the site on launch night. It was my first lesson in how crazy us photogeeks are, I haven’t missed a launch since. :)

Happy anniversary to a wonderful photographic and videography tool, and I suspect people will still be using you for years to come.

LONG LIVE THE 5D MARK II!

Announcements Before Photokina

Announcements Before Photokina

Next Week
Canon will be announcing new product next week in the lead up to Photokina. A few people have received invites to various press conferences around the globe.

So what can we expect to be announced?

Printers
At least two new “pro” Pixma printers. These will be direct replacements for the Pixma 9000 Mark II & Pixma 9500 Mark II. They’ll be be a smaller Pixma Pro-1, one with dye and the other with pigment.

There will be no 17″ Pixma printer announced this go around, but there are murmurs we will finally see one in the near future.

PowerShot
More PowerShot announcements are expected, a G12 replacement I’m told is likely, as well as a new fast lens PowerShot.

EOS Body
There is next to no talk about a new EOS body for Photokina. The next camera will be a smaller full frame camera, when is still the question.

Lenses
There has been talk of a new 400 f/5.6L being announced and not much else. I’ve had one other suggestion that a new couple of lenses for the EOS-M system could also be announced. A macro maybe?

Canon 5D Mark II & 7D Good Enough for The Avengers

Canon 5D Mark II & 7D Good Enough for The Avengers

So they’re probably good enough for you!
Canon USA sent out a press release  talking about how the 5D Mark II & 7D were used to film stunt sequences on the somewhat popular Avengers movie that just came out.

With intense action and visual effects captured by the Canon cameras, “Marvel’s The Avengers” required close-quarter action work with unrepeatable stunts. “The 5D Mark II and the 7D digital SLR cameras produce excellent, cinema-worthy images. They are great for shooting additional angles that give film editors more options for creating powerfully immersive and kaleidoscopic views of action scenes,” explained the film’s cinematographer, Seamus McGarvey.

You can read the whole press release here.

5D Mark III/X Information [CR1]

5D Mark III/X Information [CR1]

aaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!
Tons of information coming in about possibly the most anticipated camera of 2012 (sorry Nikon).

Announcement date of February 28, 2012?
I have received lots of emails saying that’ll be the announcement date. I cannot confirm it to 100% certainty, so for now it’s just a guess.

Specs?
All the same specs are coming in. 22mp, 61pt af, 6.9fps. It could definitely take the spot of the 7D, if the previous rumor is true.

Shipping?
Late March or early April is the mentioned ship times for the camera. If this is true, there should be real solid leaks coming soon.

Where’s my megapixels?
A lot of people are wondering why 22mp is it, especially after Nikon announced their 36mp D800 last week. Canon’s Masaya Maeda had some interesting things to say about a large megapixel body.

…Regarding how Canon responds to the competition from Nikon’s D800 and the concern of the successor of 5D Mark II, Maeda indicates that although he cannot leak information about un-announced product, the way Canon develops new product is to satisfy the needs of professional photographers. For instance, the introduction of EOS-1D X is to satisfy professional photographers to photoshoot sports events like the Olympics, in terms of their requirement of high FPS and high image quality under high ISO settings. If Canon thinks the market wants the high resolution models such as the 30+ MP of Nikon’s D800, they can easily develop such products…

The bolded part of the above quote basically translates to, “we have one, give us a bit to tear a D800 apart and make sure ours is better”.

I still want a 5D2!
There has also been a few suggestions that the 5D Mark II could remain current, even after a perceived replacement is announced.

Make Your 5D Mark II Infrared

Make Your 5D Mark II Infrared

When you get your 5D Mark III…..
Why not convert your 5D Mark II to an infrared camera?

Keith over at Northlight has been using an infrared 5D Mark II for a while now gives his thoughts with examples about the medium

Well it takes practice to get consistently good results. Focus needs care and it helps to bracket exposures to allow for the variable amounts of IR light in a scene compared to what you can see.

The ‘creative’ aspects of IR photography are more difficult to pin down from my own point of view.

There is that initial burst of enthusiasm for something different – that urge to explore and see just what you can do.
