Canon E-1 Plugin (From Planet5D)
Canon releases a free EOS E1 video plug-in for Apple’s Final Cut Pro. The plug-in is compatible with Final Cut Pro 6 or higher and currently supports Canon EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 7D and EOS 1D Mark IV cameras.

This new plug-in allows simple and easy transfer of video content from Canon’s EOS DSLR cameras directly into Final Cut Pro. The EOS E1 video plug-in takes advantage of Final Cut Pro’s powerful Log and Transfer feature, which allows users to select and mark the video directly while it is still on the camera, add custom metadata and ingest the clips in the background so the editing can begin immediately.

The EOS E1 video plug-in is a free download and will be available here but so far, they haven’t posted it yet. We’ll let you know when they do.

Canon Introduces MPEG-2 Full HD Codec
Canon on Tuesday said it would be releasing an MPEG-2 Full HD (4:2:2) file-based recording codec that would debut in an unannounced but upcoming professional video camera from the company. The MPEG-2 Codec would bring with it twice the color resolution of the HDV profile format and be compatible with industry-standard editing and processing software. The codec would also have 50Mbps data recording speeds.

The new format would let users record 1920×1080 HD videos and include the open-source Material eXchange Format (MXF) used by broadcasters to edit recorded content. To make the system widely and quickly accepted, Canon is working with Adobe, Apple, Avid Technology and Grass Valley.

File-based recording, including the one in Canon’s new codec, is flexible as it can be used across a wide range of editing software and applications.

This info apparently comes from the Super Meet event in San Francisco. Canon is a sponsor of the event.

This information isn’t official from Canon that I can find.

Not in February…
We’re told the 5D Mark II feature firmware update will not be available in February. Another thing not in line for the firmware is 720p mode.

1Ds Mark IV & More

Coming February?
Another good source feels that the 1Ds4 will be announced in February.

From what’s been heard, the 1Ds4 will contain some 7D design features. There were no specifics given.

Electronic level comes to mind for me.

5D Mark II Price Drop
The 5D2 seems to be dropping in price. It’s $200 less at B&H. I’m not at home right now to confirm official price drops or dealer rebates.

The Nikon D900 is coming, perhaps that’s the reason.

5D Mark II Firmware 1.2.4?

Apparently the new version doesn’t add the new functionality we’ve all been waiting for.

I did receive an email a couple days ago saying we’d see a new firmware for the 5D Mark II to make it compatible with the WFT-E4 II. That new firmware should appear any day now I’m told.

The new firmware for the 5D Mark II will not only feature 24p, but there will also be a 720p @ 60fps mode.

I neglected reporting on this because I just figured that was a given. I’ve received numerous tips on this.

The EOS 5D Mark II, 7D and 1D Mark IV (no word on the T1i) appear to be affected by the issue.

What’s the deal?
“The article by Barry Green is about the oft-reported “aliasing” artifacts in video from the Canon HDSLRs (5D Mark II, 7D, 1D Mark IV). Barry does a great job of backing up a few steps and defining the term aliasing.

Aliasing occurs when you sample something infrequently enough that you create an impression of something that wasn’t there. Imagine a blinking light in a room with a door. You must open the door to check the status of the light. If you open the door often enough, you get a pretty good picture of the status of the light, maybe something like on, on on, off off off, on on on, etc. Your samples are frequent enough to accurately represent the light’s activity.”
