Predictions for 2010 Part 1 – DSLR

January 4th, 2010 | 82 Comments | Posted in Canon 1Ds Mark 4, Canon 550D, Canon 60D, Canon EVIL

What does CR Guy See Coming?
As always, trying to predict what giant multinational corporations is going to do with product development can be hard, but I’ll give it a go.

Digital SLR
Canon needs to get back in the game as far as DSLR’s go. There is a perception that Canon has fallen behind Nikon as far as tech goes. Is it true? Maybe a little bit. There’s no reason Canon can’t be out front of Nikon, they have the resources and manufacturing capabilities to take back the crown.

1Ds Mark IV
- 32mp or higher sensor.
- Same autofocus system as 1D4
- 5fps
- New video features to separate it from the rest of the lineup.
- DIGIC IV

The Rebel Line
- Two new cameras
- One camera will be 12mp and the other 18mp (Same as the 7D)
- One camera will have an articulating display
- Both cameras will have movie modes, one being better than the other.
- Ergonomic upgrades (Scrollwheel!) Maybe more of a wish than a prediction
- New chipped batteries
- Both cameras in the 3fps to 4fps range

60D
- 18mp sensor (Same as 7D)
- 720p Video Mode @ 30fps. 1080p maybe.
- 6.3fps
- A new autofocus system based on the 7D, but less focus points.
- Missing some of the 7D bells and whistles like the electronic level.
- Smaller VF than the 7D

- This is actually a hard camera to predict. What will they leave out from the 7D?

3D
- FF in the 16-21mp range.
- 4-6.3fps
- DIGIC V
- New sensor technology
- Same size as 5D2
- 7D Autofocus system
- 1080p movie mode, same as 5D2

EVIL (Electronic viewfinder interchangeable lenses)
There will be no Micro 4/3 style camera from Canon in 2010. If they ever get on board, they will be the last one to do so.

So that makes 5 new SLR’s in 2010. That could be far fetched, but why not? 2010 is going to be a better year for most everyone.

Part 2 (Later today)
I will focus on lenses.

60D & Lenses [CR1]

December 21st, 2009 | 253 Comments | Posted in Canon 60D, Canon Lenses

60D Specs
Someone claiming to be testing a new APS-C camera from Canon wrote in yesterday.

What are they testing?

Specs
18mp APS-C
6.3fps
Single Processor (DIGIC V?)
Looks like a 50D, but has a dedicated video button
1080p Video (no info on framerates)
Less weathersealing than the 7D

Lenses
The same person claims to also be testing the 24-70 f/2.8L II IS and a 100-200 f/2L IS.

The 200 f/2L IS is pretty big (and a personal favorite), how big would a zoom version be?

Odds & Ends

1D Mark IV Delivery?
I’ve received a couple emails that state Canon will begin shipping Mark IV’s mid next week. I have nothing 100% confirmed.

EOS 60D
Lots of 60D questions. I haven’t received any super solid information.

Some things that have popped up over the last month or so. I [CR1] all of this.

1) 60D will be launched in the Spring 2010 and shipping before summer
2) Upgraded 15.1mp sensor
3) 720P video at 24, 25, 30 & 60 fps (No 1080p mode)
4) Same AF system as the 50D with some AI tweaks.
5) 6.3fps remains.

As I said, not much is too solid at this point.

Lenses
I’ve had a lot of emails saying how happy people would be if a 600 f/4 DO actually gets made. If they correct the low contrast shown in the 400 DO, we could have a big winner.

I did receive an email saying we’d see 2 new fisheyes launched in 2010. One for APS-C and one to replace the 15mm fisheye.

Canon 2010 Roadmap? [CR1]

December 1st, 2009 | 275 Comments | Posted in Canon 1Ds Mark 4, Canon 3D, Canon 60D

This is an exact quote of an email I received.
“2010 will be the year for the (semi-) pro’s due to the fact that Canon lost huge marketshare to Nikon.

The new year will bring no 60D, and no follow up for the 500D.

What will be anounced will be the 1Ds IV. This will be a totally new product with a new design. The new design is needed due to the fact that new sensor will be 35×35mm. So sort of medium format but not a full medium format.

The new sensor and format is needed to go into the low 40 megapixel range.

It also paves the way for the new xD model (probably the 3D) which will be announced late next year. For this xD I do not have much technical specs for this product yet, except for a renewed introduction of  Eye Movement Focus Control which will be based upon advanced contrast focus while moving the pupil to focus on the subject. Also this camera will be a FF camera based upon the current 21 MP sensor with improved optical range.”

CR’s Take
1Ds Mark IV….. I think a replacement is coming soon, I’ve heard January/February from a few folks. A square sensor though? Wowzers, what do you all think?

60D….. I can see a lack of a 60D in 2010, the 50D and 7D seem to be perfectly placed for their segments. A $999 50D would a good seller. There are folks that don’t care about movie mode, but want a good build.

550D…. I can’t see Canon going into Christmas 2010 without a new Rebel. Not sure on this one.

3D…. We hear about it all the time. A FF version of the 7D is a desired product. Would people pay $3499 for it? Eye control AF? I just got an EOS 3 and they better have improved it by the time a 3D hits!

Odds & Ends

EOS 60D
A battery charger claiming to charge a battery for a 60D has appeared at Best Buy. It could be the D60, or just a misprint.

60D Appears on a Universal Charger

60D Appears on a Universal Charger

7D Ship Dates
Best Buy expects first shipment of the 7D, G11 and S90 on October, 11, 2009.

7D available October 11, 2009?

7D available October 11, 2009?

thanks M

A report from the Netherlands says a Rep stated a ship date there as September 26, 2009.

Rebel XS/1000D
The Rebel XS has been removed from the Vistek web site.

A local store has had the camera on “eternal backorder”.

The camera is still appearing on Canon price lists in the US and Canada.

EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS
Canon Canada recently started instant rebates on select lenses. The 70-200 f/2.8L IS was originally part of the rebate program and has since been removed in favor of the 70-200 f/4L IS.

If you see any current Canon literature on the rebate program (I can’t find it on the web), you’ll see the 70-200 f/2.8L IS still appears on some of the literature in background images and the image for the 70-200 f/4L IS is different than the rest of the lenses on the rebate amount lines.

Canon Canada late to know something? Wouldn’t be the first time.

I’ll post pics of this tomorrow, I don’t have the literature handy.

Could be nothing…

Price Watch EOS
I have updated the Price Watch EOS page. It now includes the 7D. I have removed the 40D and G10 from the page.

A Roadmap: Odds & Ends [CR1-CR2]

From Facebook, E-Mail & [NL]
Received some information that’s new and matches some recent NL information.

More of the same stuff really.

7D Design Goals

The Lord of Darkness

The Lord of Darkness

- Speed (Apparently this may have the highest FPS of any DSLR ever)
- Dual Processors and Card Slots
- HD Video
- Articulating Screen
- Pro Style AF System
- Much Better LiveView Autofocus
- Noise Control
- Increased Dynamic Range

Rebel T1
This should be released alongside the 7D next week. Basically an XSi with a movie mode (720p tops).

60D & 1D4
The 60D will be moved back to a 18 month product cycle and will be released with a 1D4 upgrade in February. The winter Olympics aren’t as big of a deal as the World Cup is. If it was the summer games, different story. There’s no rush to get a 1D4 to the market.

60D may see a megapixel decrease. There will be new emphasis on image quality, noise control and dynamic range.

70-200 f/2.8L IS II
The perfect mate to a new speed demon camera. I’m told to expect it. I don’t have CR3 information on it yet.

As I said, this is more of the same information told in a different way from the last few weeks.

Big White Lenses
I’m also told to expect 2 of the big white lenses to get a redo along with the 1D Mark IV/4. The 500 and 600 are deemed the most likely by at least a couple of sources.

L Primes
I haven’t received any confirmation that the 135L is indeed being replaced. Most of my information I have about L prime updates dates back a fair ways. The 35L II to appear alongside a new 1Ds Mark IV? That’s still all we have at the moment.

This appeared in my Facebook inbox and in comments here
The top of a new Canon dSLR? You’ll notice the on/off toggle and m.fn button.

There also appears to be a popup flash cutout.

It appeared on forum based in Taiwan, I wasn’t sent that link.

The top of what?

A 60D & 7D? [CR1]

August 19th, 2009 | 171 Comments | Posted in Canon 60D, Canon 7D

From DPR

"I'm bringing a friend"

"I'm bringing a friend"

A DPR poster is making reference to a 60D being available alongside a cheaper FF 7D.

60D Specs
14.7mp (APS-C)
More AF Points
1080p Video

CR’s Take
I have never discounted that there could be TWO new prosumer SLR’s coming down the pipe. A 7D only would make very little sense spec wise. There would be no fast canon SLR other than the 50D and 1D Mark III (or IV when it’s replaced). We have heard solid rumors in favor of both cameras existing.

These 60D specs are pretty wonky, a new sensor? I think Canon could improve the current 15.1mp sensor as they did with the XTI sensor to the 40D.

Full Frame

August 18th, 2009 | 37 Comments | Posted in Canon 60D, Canon 7D

From the Canon Rep Said…..
Expect a full frame 60D/7D to be priced around the D300s on September 1st.

DPR: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/….

Reps do know stuff from time to time, whether one would risk their livelyhood is a different story.

Rumors Rumors Rumors

Current Lens Talk
The following are lenses that are being bandied about for release this fall.

100 f/2.8 IS Macro
200 f/3.5L IS Macro
70-200 f/2.8L IS II

50-200 f/2.8L IS
24-105 f/2.8L IS
15mm f/2.8 USM Fisheye

The only credible information I have on lenses is the two macros. We’ve always had a hard time getting lens info here at Canon Rumors, this round of rumors isn’t any different.

Bodies
The 60D/7D will be arriving to the real world next Tuesday according to most sources. A couple site August 25 as a possibility.

We’ll also be seeing a new Rebel. Canon will trump the D3000 and keep video in their entry level camera.

Flashes
There is nothing on the immediate horizon about flashes.

Powershot
An interesting email claiming Canon would be releasing another waterproof camera. It would have a 5x zoom and HD Video. It’s a [CR1] rumor.

Firmware
The 5D Mark II could be seeing a firmware update “any day now”. No word on what will be added/fixed.

Canon Rumors
The site is onto the dedicated server. We had very minimal downtown last night. All seems to be working fine.

Sorting through emails, more to come this afternoon.

Announcement Day! August 19, 2009 [CR2]

All signs point to August 19
According to a Danish site, Canon will be making their next round of PowerShot & EOS announcements August 19, 2009.

http://zoom.comon.dk/nyheder/Nyheder-fra-Canon-19-august-1.237240.html

The PowerShot lineup will receive its updates. There will also be 2 SLR’s according to multiple sources. The obvious 60D/7D camera and a 2000D/T1.

Another email stated August 25, 2009 would be the day for announcements, but my money is on the 19th.

1 SLR Coming In August? [CR1]

August 5th, 2009 | 82 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4, Canon 60D, Canon 7D

EOS 7D
The beginning of the 7D rumor began back in January. We had been told Canon would axe the “xxD” moniker and move to a more competitive camera with the Dxxx line from Nikon.

Just 1 SLR in August?
I received an email today we’ll only be seeing a replacement of the 50D in August. No 1D upgrade at this time. A 1D probably deserves its own launch anyway. Canon needs to market the heck out of the line.

Spec List 1 (NL)
* FF
* 3″ OLED
* 12.7 MP
* ISO100-25600
* Digic IV
* Wide DR mode, sRAW
* 9 focus points (+6)
* 3.4 FPS
* Pentaprism, same as 5dII
* No video
* No flash
* $1999 target

Spec List 2 (CR)
* 15.1mp (apparently it will be the same sensor with some internal upgrades)
* DIGIC V (DIGIC IV a stopover to a big advancement in processing)
* New 13 Point AF
* 1080p Movie Mode
* 8fps
* 3″ VGA LCD
* 98% VF
* New Battery
* Weathersealing
* Ergonomic Upgrades
* 1x Compact Flash and 1x Secure Digital Slots

A new one floating around today says Dual DIGIC IV, 8fps and a 15.1mp APS-C sensor.

No “Affordable” Full Frame
Another email today says we will NOT be seeing another full frame camera added to Canon’s lineup, nor will there be another APS-H.

60D Specs? [CR1]

July 30th, 2009 | 287 Comments | Posted in Canon 60D

UPDATE
The 7D rumor that was here briefly was supposed to remain a draft in Wordpress, not get published… apologies for that.

60D Rumor
Someone claiming to have seen the final proofs for the 60D brochure says these are the specs of the upcoming 60D.

I’d love to see a photograph of the brochure. All submissions are anonymous!

Here are some of the specs:
- sensor seems to be a tweaked version of the current 15MP sensor (better
DR, better high ISO IQ, eliminated pattern banding at high ISO)

- 98%-coverage, 0.96x magnification VF

- 3″, 1150K-pixel, active-matrix, organic LED display (25% higher-res than
current 960K screens)

- 19-pt., all-cross type area AF ellipse (basically, the current 1-series AF
point layout w/o the 26-pt. assist AF pts.; the new 1-series apparently will
have an all-new 45-pt., all-cross type AF module; what limits Canon from
drastically reworking the AF-point layout is the fact that all the currrent
Speedlights have AF-assist beam patterns that are designed only for 7, 9 &
45-pt. AF layouts–they just can’t make a new area AF design or add more AF
pts. that easily because of that).

- 1080p@30fps full HD video with full manual controls and contrast-
detect AF, stereo audio inputs

- 7.4FPS@14-bit mode (CIPA-standard testing method)

- new DiGIC V is more than 2x faster than current DiGICIV, enables
onboard processing of all those DPP functions still not done in-camera
with the current cams (i.e., lateral CA correction, geometric
distortion correction, better highlight & shadow detail extraction,
plus new “Diffraction Elimination” function: pixel-level contrast
enhancement and sharpening to counteract aperture-related diffraction
effects)

- AE microadjustment; +/- 3 EV range with 1/6EV steps; separate saved
corrections for Evaluative, CWA, Partial and Spot metering

- new higher capacity, slightly higher-voltage (to drive the faster
mechanicals & electrical readouts for the higher framerate), chipped
Li-Polymer battery (LP-E7), with new, magnesium-alloy framed BG-E7
battery grip with AF-ON and mini-joystick selector buttons duplicated

- lastly, an all-new, pleasantly surprising “feature” that would bring
a smile to all the Canon loyalists (just watch for it) ;)
