Here’s the Canon EOS Rebel T4i/650D & EF-S 18-135 IS STM

The New Rebel
Here’s a picture of the new Canon EOS Rebel T4i/650D.

The lens on the camera is not the new rumoured 18-135 IS with a silent AF motor. Below that is a picture with the new EF-S 18-135 IS STM (silent motor).

There are no confirmed specs at this time, we expect those soon.

*UPDATE* Canon Rebel T4i/650D on June 8 [CR3]

*UPDATE*
I upgraded the announcement date to [CR3]. The specs I’ll leave at [CR2], I haven’t heard a confirmation of the short list below.

New Rebel this week?
It appears June 8, 2012 may be the announcement date for the new Canon EOS T4i/650D. I am told the NDA’s lift that day. Friday seems to be the new favoured day of the week for Canon announcements. I didn’t get any new specs on the camera, so I posted the specs we reported earlier. I’ll post more if I get more.

I also expect a new EF-S 18-135 IS to be announced alongside the EF 40mm f/2.8 pancake.

Specifications

  • 18mp (no word on whether or not its a new or modified 18mp sensor)
  • 9 AF Points, all cross-type
  • Touchscreen LCD
  • Continuous AF in LiveView & Video Recording

Canon Rebel T4i [CR2]

Canon Rebel T4i coming soon
I’m told the announcement for the Rebel T4i will happen very soon. There may have been multiple delays in announcing it while Canon deals with production of already announced products.

The megapixel count will not match the 24mp of the new Nikon D3200 I am told. It will have DIGIC V, new video features and a few ergonomic changes. Still waiting on the definitive specs.

From a different source, we’ve been told there may be a new autofocus technology when shooting video, as well as a touchscreen.

T3i Showing up “Discontinued”

T3i Showing up “Discontinued”

T4i Soon?
A large retailer in the US is showing the Rebel T3i as “discontinued” in their stock system. Could the arrival of the T4i be around the corner?

We have previously been told the T4i would come with a new 18-135 IS lens that has a silent autofocus motor, along with a unique and inexpensive 40mm f/2.8 pancake.

Everything has been silent since then.

Canon is having a technical dinner next Monday at NAB in Las Vegas, it’s rumoured they will be talking about the new 4K DSLR camera. I can’t imagine it would be for a Rebel.

Rebel T4i/650D Information [CR1]

Rebel T4i/650D Information [CR1]

The next Rebel
Information regarding the next Rebel is quite scattered. Though we have confirmed a new 18-135 lens with a silent autofocus motor as the new feature of the lens.

Since talking about that lens, there’s been a lot of speculation as to whether or not the Rebel would receive a new autofocus feature for video recording. I cannot confirm or deny that, but for a camera that is more consumer aimed, it would be a welcomed feature to those wanting to shoot video.

There has also been a few suggestions the next Rebel will have a touchscreen and built in WiFi. Niether feature can be confirmed at this time either.

Other unconfirmed specs show the camera to be 18.1mp and running DIGIC 5, which should improve noise performance and overall image quality. I’m told we won’t see a new APS-C sensor until the 60D and 7D replacements are addressed.

I think we’re going to see T4i/650D info and an announcement after the 5D Mark III begins shipping across the globe this week (Asia and Europe have seen some shipments arrive). It’s possible a new Rebel could arrive before NAB next month in Las Vegas.

What’s Next? A General Breakdown

What’s Next? A General Breakdown

Ready yet?
The excitement around the 5D Mark III, EF 24-70 f/2.8L II and 600EX-RT was on a level that I have never seen. It’s going to be pretty hard to top in the future, maybe the 5D Mark IV will be able to do it.

However, there’s always “what’s next?” when it comes to gear in the ever advancing photography and videography world. So I may as well get right to it.

On the immediate horizon
I don’t have an exact announcement date for the gear below. I do expect these items to be the next SLR related gear to be announced.

– Rebel 650D/T4i
I haven’t received any specs of the camera, just proof that it exists and it’s coming soon. I expect DIGIC 5, articulating LCD and new movie features.

– EF-S 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS II
A second version of this lens already? That’s the word. This time it will come with a silent autofocus motor, perhaps as part of a new video AF feature in the Rebel T4i. I wouldn’t expect anything revolutionary in that regard considered the 5D Mark III and 1D X didn’t get anything advanced in that regard.

– EF/EF-S 40 f/2.8 Pancake
No word on the mount for this lens, but it’s coming and it’ll be quite inexpensive. Sub $200 I’ve heard.

– EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4X TC
This lens still hasn’t become an officially announced product. The rumored price tag is between $11,000-$12,000 USD.

Sometime in Quarter 2 or Quarter 3 2012
There are going to be some more gear announcements heading into Photokina 2012 in Germany. I have heard between 10-13 lenses will be announced in 2012 from Canon. No word if that includes any lenses for the predicted mirrorless camera.

– EF 35 f/1.4L II
This is the next likely prime candidate to be released by Canon. No word on an announcement date, but preproduction lenses exist.

– EF 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS II (the current version starts at f/4.5)
I’m told this will also arrive sometime in 2012. It will be a replacement for both the 100-400 and 400 f/5.6L. If it performs like the current 400 f/5.6 prime does at 400mm, then we’ll have a winner.

– Cinema EOS DSLR
I haven’t heard anything more about the 4K DSLR Canon said they were developing. There is speculation that it will appear before NAB 2012 in April. Nothing can be confirmed on that front.

Canon EOS Rebel T4i [CR2]

Canon EOS Rebel T4i [CR2]

The next Rebel
I received some early specs about the coming update to the T3i. We’re told to expect it before CP+ in February.

The camera will probably be a new 24mp APS-C sensor and run a DIGIC 5 processor. The DIGIC 5+ won’t be used.

Expect some standard upgrades in ISO performance, HD movie modes and some creative control updates. The final spec list is not yet finalized.

It was mentioned that Canon may keep the new sensor for a 60D upgrade, with the next Rebel sticking at 18mp.
