EOS 6D Mark II to Move Upmarket? [CR1]

We’re told that Canon hasn’t been fully satisfied with the sales of the Canon EOS 6D, a camera which I personally love for its size and simplicity. We’re told that the next iteration of the camera is likely to move upmarket in features and pricing. As it sits, there’s about a $1500 difference between the EOS 6D and the EOS 5D Mark III.

I think most people would rather see a $1499 full frame camera, but Canon seems to be marketing the EOS 7D Mark II on par with the 6D as far as image quality goes, so that might drive the 6D upwards, which in turn could also move the next EOS 5D body up as well. This is the opposite of where I saw things going, but increasing margins to offset decreasing sales numbers is good business.

Canon EOS 6D Firmware Update

Canon EOS 6D Firmware Update

Firmware Version 1.1.3 Incorporates the Following Fix
1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the Date/Time/Zone settings screen appears on the LCD display, after the user has already configured these settings. The values for the Date/Time settings may reset if the backup functions which retain those values do not perform properly.

Even if the camera does not exhibit this phenomenon currently, it may in the future. Accordingly, we recommend that you update the Firmware in the camera to version 1.1.3 as soon as possible.

Firmware Version 1.1.3 is for cameras with firmware up to version 1.1.2. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.1.3, it is not necessary to update the firmware. Before downloading the firmware update for your camera, please review the instructions thoroughly.

Canon EOS 6D Firmware by June? [CR1]

Improvements coming?
We’re told that a firmware update for the EOS 6D will be coming in the May/June timeframe if things go to plan.

The biggest addition to the camera will be f/8 autofocus at the center point. The AI servo indicator may also be added.

The firmware will also include other bug fixes and tweaks.

DPReview: Canon EOS 6D Reviewed

DPReview: Canon EOS 6D Reviewed

From DPReview
The review of the Canon EOS 6D has been completed over at DPReview. They seem to be fairly positive about it, maybe less so than I am. I think the camera is great with terrific IQ. However, they did notice the same thing that I did, the battery drain with wifi and GPS turned on is quite significant, so be sure to buy an extra battery if you don’t have one.

I also don’t miss the autofocus system of the 5D Mark III when I’m using the EOS 6D, 95% of the time I find I don’t need anything beyond the center AF point. However, this point is personal preference and you may decide you need more cross-type AF points.

From DPR
“If you’re an EOS shooter eyeing the 6D as a more affordable alternative to the 5D Mark III, even as a second backup body, Canon has made your decision fairly straightforward. Still image quality aside, the concessions you’re forced to make for the significant cost savings are substantial. A slower burst rate, less sophisticated AF system with smaller coverage area, and moiré-prone video headline the list of compromises. And while we can understand Canon’s desire to keep the camera’s price down, other seemingly arbitrary decisions, like the inability to save HDR raw images and a DOF preview button whose location is much less useful than it could be, smack solely of product differentiation…..”
