Canon EOS 70D
As expected the next DSLR from Canon will be the EOS 70D.
No specs of the camera have leaked out yet, but the last we heard it would utilize the 18mp sensor currently in the Rebel SL1. The specs have leaked.
The camera will come kitted with either the EF-S 18-55 IS STM or the EF-S 18-135 IS STM. The battery grip will be called the BG-E14
“D— —– —- AF”
We’re told the “surprise” announcement that we’re told is coming in July is for a new type of autofocus technology. This new AF tech will first appear in the EOS 70D that will be announced soon after.
What exactly the technology is, we don’t know at this time. Although we’re very excited to see if this information is accurate.
More to come….
Marketing for the new camera now under way
We’re told that the EOS 70D is in final testing and in the hands of some ‘Explorers of Light’. Canon is currently in the middle of production on a few commercials for the 70D that have been shot at various spots around the globe.
It currently looks like July is when we’ll see the replacement to the 60D finally get announced.
Not much buzz
There isn’t much information out there about Canon’s next APS-C cameras. Canon has alluded to the fact that both cameras are coming, we just don’t know when. We’ve been told previously by very good sources that only the EOS 70D will be available in 2013, though the EOS 7D Mark II could be announced in late 2013 for early 2014 availability.
We’re told a “surprise” announcement will be made by Canon in July, what that is we’re unsure. However, the source alluded to it being a camera body. I wouldn’t call the EOS 70D a “surprise”, but we’ll see. Could it be…….. something else?
21mp APS-C Sensor?
I received a very detailed email today about the future of the APS-C line at Canon. According to this person, Canon is prepping a 21mp (we’ve also heard 24mp) sensor for the 7D Mark II, and that sensor COULD also appear in the EOS 70D. The email detailed that Canon was going to launch the 70D with the same 18mp sensor as the EOS SL1, but is having second thoughts. Various prototypes and configurations of cameras tend to exist during R&D.
The issue is mass production of the 21mp sensor has not been finalized. This is delaying any announcement for a new APS camera that would use the 21mp sensor. Canon would prefer to announce a camera and have availability within 30 days of that announcement.
Both the EOS 70D and EOS 7D Mark II exist, there’s no surprises coming in that regard.
More to come…
Two people have written in to tell me that the April 23, 2013 date is not for the EOS 70D. With it being a week away, I tend to agree.
The next EOS
The next DSLR Canon is going to announce is the EOS 70D, we’re trying to confirm if it will come on April 23, 2013 as previously reported. Below is a spec list put together from various sources that have written in. All of it seems plausible and almost expected.
What to expect from the EOS 70D.
- 18mp Sensor (Same as SL1)
- DIGIC V (no one has said it will get DIGIC 6)
- SD Card
- 3.2″ Touchscreen LCD (No mention of swivel)
- Magnesium Alloy Construction
- Slightly larger than the EOS 60D
- $1199 USD Body Only
We’re told a lens will be announced with the EOS 70D, but we haven’t heen told what it will be.
We’re told Canon is holding press events on Tuesday, April 23, 2013. We have not seen any official invites, but this does come from a known source. I will post any invites I receive here to confirm.
No mention of what products to expect, though I would think an announcement for the EOS 70D must be close.
Pay close attention to the new sensor in the Canon EOS SL1 as far as performance goes. We’re told this sensor will appear in the EOS 70D, but not the EOS 7D Mark II.
Where is the 70D?
We’re told today that the 70D has been pushed into April, we had hoped that an announcement would be coming next week.
DIGIC 6 will be introduced tonight in the SX280 HS as reported a few days ago. We’re told we can expect DIGIC 6 to make its first appearance in an EOS camera inside the EOS 70D.
Keep an eye on the SL1, as it has a brand new 18mp sensor on the inside. As present, we can’t confirm that it’s also in the T5i, though it would make sense. We’re told that the 70D will have the same sensor. This is from a new source.
Nothing on the lens front, though we expect to see one announced with the EOS 70D.
The EF 00-400 f/4L IS 1.4x is becoming a running joke with folks at Canon, I don’t think any one really knows why it hasn’t been officially announced yet.
The Small DSLR
We were told this morning that two new EOS cameras will be announced on March 21/22, 2013. One of them will be the “diminutive” EOS 100D and the other was unnamed by this new source. It was also mentioned that the price of the EOS 100D was “a bit expensive”.
The same source said no 70D was coming this week, and it will be announced later in the spring. This point contradicts the information given by some pretty good sources, though it’s not impossible that things have changed since I first heard good info about the 70D.
