London, UK, 7th February 2011 – Canon today enhances its renowned IXUS series with the launch of the IXUS 220 HS – a strikingly elegant compact digital camera that blends classic IXUS design with leading performance. Sleek, slim and undeniably stylish, the new model is the latest in a line of premium, ultra-slim IXUS models, and balances greater style with a more advanced specification than ever before.
Canon’s HS System provides consistently high image quality in all conditions, while the inclusion of a 12.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor provides high-speed shooting functionality. Perfect for taking everywhere, the IXUS 220 HS also packs a 24mm ultra-wide angle 5x optical zoom lens into a sleek, stainless steel body just 19.5mm thin, making it the slimmest camera of its kind*1. The ability to shoot Full HD (1080p) videos with stereo sound also allows users to capture moving images in stunning quality.
Exquisite design, HS System-powered performance
Designed to provide an unrivalled combination of design and performance, the IXUS 220 HS is the latest IXUS to feature the HS System – an optimised combination of a high-sensitivity image sensor and powerful DIGIC 4 processing technology. Incorporating a back-illuminated CMOS sensor, the HS System lowers noise levels by up to 60% at all ISO speeds*2, allowing users to capture beautiful, high quality images with less noise and blur – even in low light. DIGIC 4 processing provides speed, superb image rendition, low image noise and accurate colour tones, as well as high levels of responsiveness in overall operation.
Ultra-wide, ultra-flexible
The IXUS 220 HS offers users exceptional shooting flexibility, thanks to a genuine Canon ultra-wide angle 24mm lens with 5x optical zoom and a highly-effective optical Image Stabilizer. Providing greater framing versatility, the lens allows users to fit even more into a frame at the wide end of the lens, and to reach more distant subjects with the 5x optical zoom. Canon’s leading optical Image Stabilizer also compensates for camera shake to prevent image blur at the telephoto-end of the zoom, or when shooting in low light – capturing sharp, detailed images in all conditions when shooting handheld.
A large, high quality 6.7 cm (2.7″) PureColor II G LCD is perfect for image framing, playback and menu navigation. The 230k-dot resolution ensures fine levels of on-screen detail, and a tempered glass outer layer provides a wider viewing angle with excellent colour reproduction and high contrast. The tempered glass design also offers outstanding durability, and Hints & Tips throughout the interface give a short explanation of camera features, helping users to learn about their camera as they use it.
Small, stylish, feature-packed
Despite its slim design, the IXUS 220 HS is packed with a vast range of features. The smallest Canon compact camera ever to feature Full HD video capture, the new model shoots stunning 1920x1080p at 24frames per second (fps) with stereo sound, capturing special moments in rich clarity. Users can utilise the optical zoom to reach distant subjects during video capture, and Canon’s Dynamic optical Image Stabilizer counteracts picture shake commonly recorded when the user is moving and recording at the same time, helping to produce smoother, sharper footage. A dedicated Movie Record Button makes switching from stills to video instant so no action is ever missed.
Incredible performance, outstanding ease of use
Ideal for users who just want to point and shoot, the IXUS 220 HS features Canon’s latest Smart Auto mode. Designed to make it easy for anyone to capture great-quality shots, Smart Auto evaluates each shooting situation against multiple factors and selects the optimum settings from 32 variables, capturing the perfect picture. All the photographer needs to do is focus on framing the shot – Smart Auto takes care of everything else.
Smart Auto features Face Detection Technology and the latest Advanced Subject Detection technology, allowing the camera to identify and lock onto human faces, or onto moving objects such as pets or vehicles within a scene. Once identified, Servo AF/AE keeps the main subject in focus and well-exposed, right up until the shutter release is fully pressed and the image captured. i-Contrast and Smart Flash Exposure functions within Smart Auto also ensure subjects are captured in the best possible detail, reducing the occurrence of harsh shadows and over-exposed highlights.
High-speed and creative shooting
The IXUS 220 HS features high-speed shooting modes for capturing fast-moving action. High-speed Burst mode shoots still images at up to 8.0 shots/sec. in 3.0MP, while Continuous shooting mode captures up to 3.4 shots/sec. in full 12.1MP resolution until the memory card is full, so users never miss a moment. Super Slow Motion Movie mode offers a great way to slow down fast-moving action such as sports, shooting at 240fps at 320×240 and playing back at 1/8 of real speed, providing a dramatic account of action sequences. VGA-quality videos (640×480) are now supported in Super Slow Motion Movie mode, shooting at 120fps with playback at 1/4 of the real speed.
A new Movie Digest mode also provides users with a new, interesting way to capture a day’s events. When set to Movie Digest mode, the IXUS 220 HS will record up to four seconds prior to every still image taken, before joining all clips captured in the same day into a single movie. Offering an alternative method for users to record their experiences, Movie Digest mode is a fun, easy way to capture the story behind still images in movie format.
For users who want to try out different effects, six creative shooting modes are available to add a different perspective to images. In addition to Miniature Effect, Fish-eye Effect, Super Vivid and Poster Effect, a new Toy Camera Effect gives images the retro feel of pinhole camera photos, while Monochrome creates atmospheric shots with sepia, black & white or other monochromatic tones. Miniature Effect can be applied to movies as well as still images, recording 1.5, 3 or 6fps in movie mode to create the impression of a time-lapse video of a small-scale model.
Shoot underwater with waterproof casing
Versatile enough to take anywhere, the IXUS 220 HS is also compatible with a choice of new and optional waterproof cases. The slim Waterproof Case WP-DC320L is water-resistant up to three meters, making it an affordable solution for snorkelling or outdoor sports. The Waterproof Case WP-DC41 is ideal for more serious underwater shooting, offering resistance down to 40 metres, with full control of all functions – allowing users to adjust and tune image settings to reflect different scenes and situations.

Shoot more with Movie Mode
As well as impressive stills, you can instantly record Full HD 1080p movies by pressing the dedicated movie record button as the action unfolds – allowing you to capture special moments in stunning clarity. For even more artistic movies, Super Slow Motion Movie can capture life up to eight times slower than real-time. London, UK, 7th February 2011 – Canon today unveils the incredible new IXUS 310 HS – the latest touch screen IXUS that combines superior low-light capabilities, Full HD movie capture and manual photographic controls in a stunning stainless steel body. Designed for users who want superior performance and styling, the IXUS 310 HS provides excellent image quality and a host of advanced features, making it easy to capture crisp stills and stunning 1080p video.
Canon’s HS System and a bright, ultra-wide angle lens with optical Image Stabilizer allow users to capture any scene in fantastic quality. An enhanced version of Canon’s intuitive touch interface provides greater control over stills and video, and a new dedicated movie record icon enables fast switching between picture and movie capture. Combining a premium specification and stand-out IXUS styling, the IXUS 310 HS is the perfect compact camera for any situation – whether capturing stunning sunsets on holiday, the atmosphere of a city at night or fun portraits of friends on an evening out.
Ultimate low-light performance
The inclusion of the HS System enables the IXUS 310 HS to offer leading performance. The high-sensitivity 12.1Megapixel CMOS sensor combines with Canon’s DIGIC 4 image processor to form the HS System and realise the highest possible image quality, capturing images with significantly less noise in all conditions. Dynamic range is improved and users are able to capture sharp, blur-free shots of scenes in low light that would usually demand flash support.
The IXUS 310 HS features a genuine Canon 24mm, ultra-wide angle, 4.4x optical zoom lens with a bright f/2.0 maximum aperture. As well as providing greater shooting flexibility, the lens design enables faster shutter speeds to be used, capturing the maximum amount of ambient light for well exposed, natural shots. Users can also shoot with a shallower depth of field than most other compact cameras for more engaging portraits and creative macro shots. A 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer steadies the light passing through the lens elements, counteracting shake and image blur that can occur when shooting with slower shutter speeds or at the telephoto-end of the zoom.
Working together, the HS System, the f/2.0 lens and the advanced optical Image Stabilizer become the ultimate tool for sharper and clearer image results in all lighting conditions – especially in low light situations.
Fingertip control, intuitive interface
A large, 8.0 cm (3.2”), 460K dot-resolution PureColor II Touch LCD offers excellent contrast and colour rendition, with a wide viewing angle that makes it easy to frame and play back images. Canon’s advanced, customisable touch screen interface allows the icons for various camera settings to be arranged according to the user’s preference. Touch AF sets the focus area with a simple touch, while Touch Actions and Tap Control offer an easy and intuitive way to operate the camera with simple pre-set gestures used for various functions, such as flicking through the image library, or changing settings on-screen.
Full HD movies made easy
IXUS 310 HS owners can capture all the excitement of a special moment in superb quality, thanks to Full HD movie recording with stereo sound. The optical zoom can also be used when shooting, and Smart Auto in Movie offers additional support, optimising the camera settings in accordance with the shooting conditions and scene.
Dynamic Image Stabilizer has also been included, allowing users to shoot smoother and steadier video – even if the footage is shot whilst walking or sitting in a moving car. For a “behind the scenes” story of the day’s shots, a new Movie Digest function automatically captures up to four seconds of video before a still image is taken, and then assembles all the day’s clips into a bonus reel of spontaneous, fun video.
Users can now shoot video in iFrame format, which requires no transcoding before being imported – making it faster and simpler to transfer and edit footage. HDMI-CEC compatibility also allows the camera to be connected to an HDTV and controlled via the TV remote control, making it easier to enjoy captured moments on a big screen.
High speed shooting
The inclusion of a CMOS sensor enables a number of high-speed shooting functions which offer more creative flexibility. Best Image Selection shoots a high speed sequence of five shots, evaluating all the frames and selecting the best one to be saved to the memory card. The IXUS 310 HS can shoot full resolution stills at up to 3.4 shots per second and 8.2 shots per second at a reduced, 3.0 MP resolution in High-speed Burst mode. Handheld Night Scene mode allows the capture of multiple shots of the same scene, before merging them together to create one image with the least possible blur and the best possible exposure.
The IXUS 310 HS also features Super Slow Motion Movie mode, allowing users to slow down fast-paced action, such as sports – capturing the scene in VGA resolution at 120 frames per second (fps), or in 320×240 resolution at 240fps. Play-back at 30fps enables users to analyse movement like a golf swing, or to add drama and atmosphere to fast-paced action.
Control and creative support
More advanced users will appreciate the control over aperture or shutter speed offered by Av and Tv modes respectively, while for those who prefer point-and-shoot simplicity, the latest Smart Auto mode is now capable of detecting up to 32 scenes, capturing well-exposed images without manually changing the camera settings. A new Advanced Subject Detection technology allows the camera to detect and track even non-human moving subjects, while Servo AF/AE ensures the subject remains in-focus and correctly exposed right up to the moment the picture is taken.
For those who want to experiment with their shots, six creative shooting modes offer the freedom and flexibility to create different effects. In addition to Fish-eye Effect, Super Vivid and Poster Effect, the new Toy Camera Effect gives images a retro, pinhole camera feel, while Monochrome creates atmospheric shots with sepia, black and white or other monochromatic tones.
Canon’s popular Miniature Effect can be applied to movies as well as still images, recording 1.5, 3 or 6 frames per second in Movie mode to create the impression of a time-lapse video of a small-scale model. Multi-Aspect shooting also allows the individual to frame their original photo in 3:2, 4:3, 1:1 and 16:9, to create the desired effect, right from the start.
For even greater flexibility, Smart Shutter makes it easy for the user to be part of the image. Thanks to Face Detection technology, the shutter can be triggered by a wink, a smile or by a new face being detected in the scene.

The PowerShot SX230 HS also features new GPS*1 functionality – a first for a Canon compact camera – allowing users to record the location where their images were taken and to record their journey with the GPS Logger.
Replacing the popular and highly-acclaimed PowerShot SX210 IS, both new models offer a leading set of features perfect for capturing your travels. Each includes Canon’s HS System for outstanding picture quality in all conditions, a wide-angle 14x optical zoom lens, as well as Full HD (1080p) movie recording with stereo sound. Users can choose between pink, blue and black finishes for the PowerShot SX230 HS, purple and grey for the PowerShot SX220 HS.
The HS System: Premium image quality even in low light
The inclusion of the HS System in the new PowerShot SX230 HS and PowerShot SX220 HS means that both models can capture outstanding-quality images in more situations than ever before. Representing a unique combination of a 12.1MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor and Canon’s powerful DIGIC 4 processing technology, the HS System works to produce images with reduced noise and increased dynamic range that produces clear, detailed and natural results even in the most challenging of situations.
By reducing the occurrence of noise by up to 60% at all ISO speeds*2, the HS System allows users to capture beautiful, high quality images throughout the day and into the evening without using the camera flash or a tripod. The DIGIC 4 processor, unique to Canon provides accurate colour tones, as well as high responsiveness in everyday operation.
Record every step of your journey
The 14x genuine Canon optical zoom lens featured in both models offers a huge zoom range to capture a wide range of subjects. The 28mm wide-angle setting allows the capture of wide, sweeping landscapes or fit more of a scene into a frame, and with the full zoom at a 392mm equivalent focal length, users can reach distant subjects without having to move. Canon’s leading optical Image Stabilizer technology corrects camera shake, offering a 4-stop advantage to prevent image blur throughout the entire zoom range and when shooting in handheld in low light – capturing sharp, detailed images in all conditions.
Ideal for travellers or casual shooters, the PowerShot SX230 HS’ GPS unit will record where and when images are taken, allowing users to easily keep a record of the place and time their pictures are shot. Additionally, the GPS Logger facility can record the journey that users take, allowing them to later review their travels by using the supplied Map Utility software which integrates with Google Maps*3.
Both models shoot 1920x1080p Full HD movies at 24fps with stereo sound, capturing special moments with superb clarity. Users can also utilise the impressive 14x optical zoom to reach the most distant subjects during video capture, and Canon’s Dynamic optical Image Stabilizer counteracts camera shake commonly recorded when shooting movies while moving, helping to produce smoother, sharper video footage. A movie record button also makes switching from stills to video instantaneous so action is never missed.
A large, high quality 7.5 cm (3.0″) PureColor II G LCD provides the perfect platform for image framing and playback. A 460k-dot resolution offers pin-sharp levels of clarity during recording and playback, and a tempered glass layer provides additional strength and enhances visibility, with a wide viewing angle and excellent colour reproduction. A 16:9 aspect ratio is perfectly optimised for HD video capture, while Hints & Tips throughout the interface offer a short explanation of each feature, helping users learn more about the camera’s features as they need to.
Point and shoot – with amazing results
Ideal for users who just want to point and shoot, the PowerShot SX230 HS and PowerShot SX220 HS feature Canon’s Smart Auto mode. Designed to make it easy for anyone to get great-quality shots, Smart Auto uses Scene Detection Technology to evaluate each shooting situation against multiple factors and selects the optimum scene from 32 variables, capturing the perfect picture. All the photographer needs to do is focus on framing the shot – Smart Auto takes care of everything else.
Smart Auto also features the latest Advanced Subject Detection technology, allowing the camera to identify and lock onto non-human subjects such as pets or other moving objects within a scene. Once identified and the shutter has been half-pressed, Servo AF/AE ensures the subject remains in focus and well-exposed, right up until the shutter release is fully pressed and the image captured. i-Contrast and Smart Flash Exposure functions within Smart Auto also ensure subjects are captured in the best possible detail, reducing the occurrence of harsh shadows and over-exposed highlights.
Both new models feature a range of high-speed shooting features – ideal for capturing the fastest-moving action. High-speed Burst mode means that users will never miss a moment, rapidly shooting up to 8.1 shots/sec. at 3.0 MP resolution so every moment of the action is recorded. Super Slow Motion Movie mode offers a great way to slow down fast-moving action like sports, shooting at 240 fps at 320×240 resolution or 120 fps at 640×480 to provide a dramatic account of fast action sequences.
A new Movie Digest shooting mode provides a fun new way to add movie footage to a day of shooting still images. Movie Digest mode films and records the action up to four seconds before every still image taken, before joining all clips captured into a VGA-resolution movie. Users can also shoot video in the Apple®*4 iFrame Video format, which offers a simple way to work with video on a computer. Designed to work with Mac and PC video applications it can dramatically speed up the process of importing, editing and sharing movies across multiple platforms and devices.
Complete creative control
As well as a range of instant and easy shooting modes, both the PowerShot SX230 HS and the PowerShot SX220 HS offer complete manual control over camera settings, allowing users to get more creative with their pictures. SX130 IS 1.0.1.0 Firmware Update
New firmware for the budget superzoom.
- Fixes a phenomenon in which the audio and video get recorded out of sync when shooting movies with the image quality set to high definition (1280×720 pixels).
- This phenomenon occurs gradually from the starts of recording and becomes more noticeable as the recording time gets longer.
- The longest HD movies this model can record at one time are approximately 10 minutes in length.
- This phenomenon occurs only when the image quality is set to HD; it does not occur in the other settings (640×480 pixels or 320×240 pixels)

60D Review Coming
The M9 review was well received and I enjoyed doing it. I’m going to follow the same formula for the 60D review. Do not expect to see the review soon, I want to use the camera for a while and try to make good photographs with it. I’m debating whether to take it to Kenya with me in November. I might split the review into 2 parts, keep an eye out.
Canon Rumors is Moving
Canon Rumors is in the process of switching hosts, there could be a hiccup or two in the next couple of days.

Part 2: PowerShot
There are a lot of PowerShot fans out there, and Canon has unleashed another pile of cameras for you folks to choose from.
*NOTE* These opinions are loose and based the specifications of the products and initial impressions. I will delve deeper next week.
PowerShot G12
A very small upgrade to the popular G11. We can assume Canon is just coasting with this series of camera, they’ve had no real competition. The P7000 may look like a G11, but if it continues the Coolpix heritage, Canon doesn’t have much to worry about.
Should it have been more of an upgrade? It depends who you ask, but all people were criticizing with the G11 was the lack of HD video. That’s been somewhat rectified with 720p.
PowerShot S95
Pretty much the same type upgrade as the G12. I’ll find out next week if the looseness of the back wheel has been fixed. I hear it’s still a problem for some people.
PowerShot SX30 IS
Initial impressions? Completely absurd, an equivalent of an 24-840mm lens? Canon has lead the megapixel war, in some cases, too far. Now they’re leading the insane zoom war.
I’m going to be very interested in the results one will get at 840mm on an overcast day.
PowerShot SD4500 IS
This will probably become a very popular camera with travellers and the like. Women will also gobble up its small size and big zoom. I think it’ll be a sales winner.
PowerShot SX130 IS
A budget series continues. Not much to say about it.
What’s missing from the PowerShot announcements?
The first camera that comes to mind is a replacement for the D10. Canon’s first go at a waterproof camera had some serious ups and downs. I have heard there is going to be another waterproof camera or two, an announcement time for it/them is unknown.
Outside of that, everything that was expected came down the pipe. Very few are asking for a larger sensor PowerShot anymore, we all seem to be waiting for Canon’s version of a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera.
Safe, calculated and truly Canon. That’s how I’d describe the direction of PowerShots.
More 60D Stuff
After seeing what Nikon threw out there with the D7000, coming in at $100 more expensive than the 60D. there’s a perception Canon dropped the ball on this one. I think the 60D looks about $100 overpriced now.
That being said, Canon will still sell a lot of them to upgrading Rebel users. There are more Rebels out there than any other DSLR.
The D7000 is going to take new DSLR buyers away from Canon, but I don’t think it’ll make too many people switch.

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., September 14, 2010 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announced the addition of the new PowerShot G12 and PowerShot SX30 IS Digital cameras with innovative features to help photo enthusiasts further develop their photographic capabilities. Once again setting the trend in the consumer digital camera market and solidifying its spot atop the PowerShot lineup, the PowerShot G12 will have High Definition (HD) video capture capabilities along with the HS (High Sensitivity) SYSTEM helping to produce outstanding quality in the toughest low-light conditions. The PowerShot SX30 IS Digital camera is the world’s first point-and-shoot model to feature a 35X-Wide Angle Optical Zoom lens with Optical Image Stabilization, making those long distance shots that much easier to capture and then share with friends and family.1 Consumers have grown accustomed to PowerShot cameras providing brilliant image quality while also offering the latest technological upgrades. The addition of these new cameras helps solidify Canon’s position as the leader in the digital camera marketplace.
PowerShot G12 Digital Camera

Canon PowerShot G12
As the feature set of the PowerShot G-series has evolved, the one mainstay has been the camera’s ability to provide complete creative control to the photographer. Keeping with tradition, the PowerShot G12 offers a full range of shooting and recording modes with new, exciting features such as High Dynamic Range (HDR) scene mode. Offering added flexibility to photographers, this scene mode allows for multiple shots to be combined into one image helping to capture the full magnitude of a scene that consists of very dark tones and bright highlights producing greater image details. With the use of a tripod, one push of the shutter button yields three sequential images with various exposures, and then combines them into a single optimized image. A feature such as this typically requires outside software, however, this process can be completed within the camera thus helping to eliminate one critical step in the creation and editing process. Another valuable addition to this new model is Canon’s Hybrid IS technology that compensates for angular and shift camera shake, helping to create a near perfect image.
The Canon PowerShot G12 has a large, bright 2.8-inch vari-angle LCD with 461,000 dots of resolution providing photographers with additional creative control whether holding the camera overhead or low to the ground. A new control dial has been added to the front of the camera as well for easy adjusting of camera settings similar to how users operate a Canon Digital SLR camera. Further adding to the overall appeal of the new Canon PowerShot G12 is a 5X-Optical Zoom lens with Optical Image Stabilization and its wide-angle capabilities starting at 28mm, which will help when trying to get a sweeping landscape into one image. When using compatible optional accessories such as Speedlite flashes, an underwater housing and a tele-converter lens the photographic possibilities for users of this new camera are almost endless.
The estimated selling price of the PowerShot G12 is $499.99 and will be available in early October.*
PowerShot SX30 IS Digital Camera

Canon PowerShot SX30 IS
The Canon PowerShot SX30 IS Digital camera is the perfect companion for photo enthusiasts capturing memorable images or videos at sporting events or special occasions. The addition of the new super telephoto lens, which ranges from an ultra-wide 24mm to a maximum length of 840mm, will offer unrivaled results while opening up a whole new realm of possibilities for users along the photographic journey. Helping to make this journey that much easier is a new Zoom Framing Assist button to aid in the tracking and capturing of subjects from a great distance away while keeping the lens in focus. At extreme telephoto settings, holding a camera unsteady can cause the user to lose track of the subject and make it difficult to find the subject. The Zoom Framing Assist button allows the user to zoom out, find the subject and then zoom back in.
The PowerShot SX30 IS has a 14.1-Megapixel sensor, DIGIC 4 image processor and a large, 2.7-inch wide vari-angle LCD for easy viewing of images along with added flexibility when trying to compose overhead or low to the ground images. In addition, the PowerShot SX30 IS for the first time will use a Lithium ion rechargeable battery rather than the standard AA batteries found on previous models, making powering up the camera much easier.
The estimated selling price of the PowerShot SX30 IS is $429.99 and will be available in late September.*

Coming with the G12 and SX30?
Received a little tip that the D20 will be coming officially with the G12 and SX30. I haven’t see a leak yet like the other two.
No specs of any kind were given. I think everyone is hoping for a form factor change though.
Seems logical, we’ll see.
