1Ds Mark IV
Stephen Alvarez (NG Photographer) posted a tidbit of information on his blog. 4-5 people sent this link in, so I’ll pass it onto the rest.
“A friend told me that there are some Canon 1ds MK IV test models floating around.”
http://www.picturestoryblog.com/2010/08/canon-1ds-mk-iv.html
Nothing extraordinary.
S90
I was just told the S90 has officially reached EOL (End of Life).
August 30/31
I received info that this is a timeframe that a new DSLR would be announced. I wasn’t told which model. Just that it would be as revolutionary as the 5D Mark II was. I was promised better information from this person in the next couple of weeks.

5D Mark II
The 5D Mark II currently has an instant $500 rebate in Canada.
I do not recall ever seeing that big of a rebate on a camera body. The 800 f/5.6 which costs about 5 times more than a 5D Mark II has a $1000 rebate.
I’ve received some info about a new Hybrid camera for September that is a giant leap forward.
I’m not saying 5D Mark III, but that’s a big rebate for an “affordable” camera.
D700 replacement imminent?
60D
Various reports of reps saying a 60D is on the near horizon.
A lot more stores reporting a dried up inventory of 50D’s and inability to get more.
100-400 Replacement
More reports of a 100-400 replacement.
I’m going to say it isn’t coming based on past experience ordering products that are about to be replaced. The 100-400 is still very easy to get from Canon Canada.
I’ll monitor this closely.
One thing that may suggest it’s coming is Nikon is preparing a replacement of the 80-400 I’m told. If we go by the 70-200 f/2.8 replacements, we could expect Canon to upgrade theirs as well.
I will note the 100-400 is a massive seller for Canon as it sits.
500 f/5.6 or 600 f/5.6
I’ve heard a couple request for both of these lenses. With the ISO abilities of camera bodies now, why do we need to lug around f/4 supertelephotos?
A replacement of the 400 f/5.6L with a 500 f/5.6L IS makes a pile of sense. A lot of people take the 100-400 over the 400 prime. A 500 prime at f/5.6 could cost $3000-$4000 and sell very well.
A 600 f/5.6? A lot less likely. I’d expect to see a 600 DO first.
Canon G12
The next “G” will be CMOS equipped and shoot HD video. I’m told I can guarantee it. Not really a reach after seeing the SD4000. :)
Another suggestion is a form factor change and a better optical VF.
Gearing up for Rumor Season
A lot more little things are coming in now. Expect things to take off soon.

New Waterproof Soon
A sign a new waterproof camera is on its way is Canon Canada seems to be replaceing broken D10′s with whole new cameras, instead of fixing them.
I’ve seen this once before with a midlevel PowerShot, and sure enough it was replaced shortly after.
There are lots of factors that probably go into these decisions, but cost of warehousing them is definitely a factor. A discontinued PowerShot is a hard sell for retailers outside of the G series.
Theres also perception issues and high administrative costs to just pricedrop a camera to get rid of them.
Entire 2010/2011 Season of House By Canon DSLR?
I received information that the makers of House plan to shoot the entire next season with the 5D Mark II and possibly the 7D.
However, this time they would be adapting PV & possibly PL lenses.

PowerShot Fun
The announcement of the SD4000 is pretty significant to the PowerShot line. It definitely tells us what else is coming down the pipe.
It uses a 10mp backlit CMOS sensor. This will apparently greatly improve high ISO performance.
I was told the sensor was made by Canon, I’m just trying to confirm it through other sources.
I had a chance to play with one for a few minutes today at the Canon booth.
The camera I shot these with was NOT a final production model.

ISO 1600 - Canon SD4000 - Click for Full Rez

ISO 3200 - Canon SD4000 - Click for Full Rez
They aren’t pulitzer shots, but it should give you an idea what this little camera is capable of.
The shots were shot at 7.5mp and not the full 10mp. I only had about 20 seconds with the camera.
More to come later.

5D Mark III in 2011
Vincent Laforet on a recent webcast alluded to the next incarnation of the 5D coming “next year”.
He also mentioned Canon is committed to improving the mini HDMI connector on the cameras.
It’s rare to hear any of the sponsored photographers mention future products.
New Flash
A brief comment I received said Canon is readying to replace the 580EX II with a new unit. This will not be an addition to the flash lineup. There will be some new technology built into the flash as well.
PowerShot SX20 Replacement
The SX20 replacement will take a bit of a departure from the SX10 & SX20. Expect a new lens setup, design and image sensor technololgy.
The source also says expect the SX20 to be the last superzoom from Canon that uses AA batteries. I know that will NOT be music to the ears of a lot of people. It seems to be a 50/50 split for LiIon vs AA with the camera line.
New Waterproof Camera
Expect a new waterproof camera to be announced with the 60D in the coming month. I’ve also been told there could be a waterproof camcorder.

DPReview
DPReview has completed their review of the Canon PowerShot S90.
Final Word – DPR
Photographers looking for a serious, pocket-friendly, compact camera haven’t had a lot to choose from, and the S90 offers the first real competition to Panasonic’s LX3, the success of which almost certainly led Canon to revive the long-running and much missed ‘S’ series. I may not have liked it when I first used it, but I soon found myself picking it up every time I went out the door.
It is, above all else, a great walkaround camera, capable of results (particularly at lower ISO settings) that most serious photographers would be more than happy with. The control system encourages photographic experimentation (unlike so many compacts, which simply make it too painful to work manually), but the automatic systems are also reliable – and intelligent – enough to give you great results if you prefer to just ‘point and shoot’. The tiny body might not make for particularly good handling, but it’s small enough to carry anywhere and the image quality it produces rarely disappoints.

CR’s Take
I own this camera and love it for the most part. My biggest gripe with it is the same as DPRs; the backwheel gets spun too easily.
The solution Canon?
How about a firmware update to add a back wheel lock to the “S” button on the back. I could do away with a quick access to ISO for a back wheel lock.
I have the camera set up to have aperture on the front ring and exposure comp on the back wheel for those keeping score.
Canon Canada Rebates

New Stuff in May?

Received an email today saying Canon will make some minor product announcements in the May/June timeframe.
By minor, I’d assume a PowerShot or 2 and the new remotes we were told about earlier in the week.
The only PowerShot I’ve heard anything about has been a replacement of the D10.
I think major announcements will be saved for closer to Photokina in September. There’s going to be some great stuff.
