What I Know

February 22nd, 2010 | 103 Comments | Posted in Canon 1Ds Mark 4

Not much
1) If there is a camera tomorrow, it’s the closest guarded camera I’ve run into. None of my CR3 sources have said a thing. I don’t initiate contact with them, I just wait for emails. Nothing has shown up.

2) DigitalREV had a post on their twitter account that tomorrow was about a workshop and not a camera launch. That twitter post has since been removed, what’s that mean?

3) We still have the missing camera ID from the 1D Mark IV firmware.

4) 1D Mark IV reviews are getting out fast from folks.

5) I can’t believe Canon is going to WPPI with a Rebel T2i, a 70-200 f/2.8L IS II and nothing else. They have the biggest booth at the event.

I won’t be sleeping tonight. I hope our CR2 stuff comes to pass, but I’m fully prepared to eat crow at this point.

Just going to develop some film (gah! film!), and wait for my email sound to chime. New EOS-1v? :)

1D Mark IV Review – DPReview

February 22nd, 2010 | 55 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4

Just Posted1D Mark IV
DPR has just posted their review of the 1D Mark IV.

The Final Word (From DPR)
A lot has already been said about the 1D Mark IV, both by people who have tested it and those who have tried to weigh it up against the D3S and that kind of nit-picking makes it easy to overlook what an astonishing camera it is. And looked at from a neutral perspective, both it and the Nikon are unmistakably the best sports cameras that modern technology allows.

Its talents are slightly different to those of D3S but its strengths will be a great asset to many people – the smaller sensor that prevents it competing at the very highest ISOs delivers the kind of extra reach that many touchline shooters will appreciate. Frankly there’s more to both cameras than just their high ISO performance and, while the Mark IV isn’t the best high ISO camera on the market, it’s still an exceptionally good one. From the point-of-view of the tasks it was built to tackle, there is nothing that can touch the detailed, high resolution images that it can deliver ten times a second.

What’s Coming Next Week? [CR2]

February 18th, 2010 | 408 Comments | Posted in Canon 1Ds Mark 4, Canon Flashes, Canon Lenses

From one good source
This is a CR2 source that has been right on multiple occasions and missed a few.

Next week I’m told we will see the following.

Camera:
1Ds Mark IV  at 32mp. No other spec details.

There will be no 60D at this time.

Lenses:
EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS

I’m told this is for sure, take it to the bank. I have yet to hear from CR3 people in regards to the lens.

2 other lenses would be announced. One would be niche market and the other an EF mount lens. There is currently nothing more definitive out there.

Flash [CR1]
2 different sources said we’ll see a new speedlite. Both are CR1

There should be ton of info over the weekend, and I’ll be awake for most of it.

Apparently Canon Canada has told dealers to expect initial shipments next week. Canon Canada also claims to have a lot of them available. There are high expectations for the camera sales wise.

Sensors & Lenses!

February 17th, 2010 | 130 Comments | Posted in Canon 1D Mark 4, Canon Lenses, Nikon

From DXOMark
DXOMark has released their findings for the Nikon D3s and Canon 1D Mark IV.

Canon 1D Mark IV vs Nikon D3s

It’s about a wash between the 2 cameras outside of what we already knew. The high ISO performance is superior out of the camera on the D3s and it’s lower megapixel/larger sensor.

Again, take it for what its worth.

The lens will retail for $2499 USD. I’m still searching for places in North America to preorder this thing. I have yet to see pricing in Canada.

Cosina APO-LANTHAR 90mm F3.5 SL II for EF

February 17th, 2010 | 43 Comments | Posted in Third Party Lenses

Press Release (Google Translated)
Cosina has announced the Voigtländer-branded Apo-Lanthar 90mm F3.5 SL II close focus lens for Canon, Nikon and Pentax mounts. Maintaining the same 50cm minimum focusing distance and optical construction of the previous, SL version, the lens has been redesigned with a smaller body. Additionally, by mounting the included close up lens, its closest focusing distance can be reduced down to 32cm, giving a magnification ratio of 1:1.8. Priced at ¥58,000 (~ US $645) for the Canon EF mount and ¥55,000 (~ US $610) for the Nikon Ai-S mount and Pentax KA mount, it will be available in Japan from early March 2010.

New Flash? [CR1]

February 15th, 2010 | 68 Comments | Posted in Canon Flashes

New Pro Speedlite
I was told today that a new pro flash is in the process of being tested and will greatly benefit users of gels, as well as a “few other surprises” I haven’t been told about yet.

Feature List
- Gel info built into unit
- Custom gel accessories from Canon
- A guide number higher than 58. Perhaps as high as 70.
- Some functions of the flash unit are not yet available in EOS cameras, not even the 1D4. Possibly new camera firmware needed.
- Exact announcement date unknown, although 2010 is likely.

That’s all for now.

Canon Prototype Full Frame DSLR Shooting RAW Video?

February 15th, 2010 | 142 Comments | Posted in Canon 1Ds Mark 4, Canon 5D Mark III

HDSLR w/Raw Video?

1Ds4 or 5D3?

In my inbox, as well as posted on Planet5D (not sure which came first). There is apparently a full frame dSLR being tested in Europe that can shoot RAW video.

Could the camera be the upcoming 1Ds Mark IV or early testing of the 5D Mark III? I’ve been told previously that the 1Ds4 would have video features currently not available in any Canon dSLR.

The 5D Mark III is starting to get whispers around the web. From myself as well as others. I won’t be posting much at this time about such a camera until regular sources start to say something. The camera could come as early as Photokina in September, but I’m still wagering on a 2011 release.

1Ds Mark IV Release Date
Everything has been quiet about a concrete launch date. There also hasn’t been any new word on lenses. Going by past experience, this is the calm before the storm.
