Apple’s Aperture can now convert the Canon 7D Raw files.

Update Notes:
This update extends RAW image compatibility for Aperture 2, iPhoto ’08 and iPhoto ’09 for the following cameras: Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, Canon EOS 7D, Canon PowerShot G11, Nikon D3S, Nikon D300S, and Nikon D3000.

Magic Lantern on the 7D

Magic Lantern is coming to the Canon 7D — the dev team can produce valid, signed firmware images and run their own code on the camera. The first video shows a 7D booting into a test firmware that draws colors bars and writes the ROM image to the CF card for analysis.

Darwin Wigget’s 7D Review… the counterpoint
Pro Photo Home has posted a retort to the claims made by Darwin Wigget and his review of the 7D.

Pro Photo Home seems to be doing tests at f/5.6 & f/16. I think the issue with the 7D was in the f/8 to f/11 area. Most seem to be saying that diffraction sets in with larger apertures on the 7D compared to the XSi.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but check it out.

The bad news? You still can’t use a polarizer. There is a company working on a solution so you can actually polarize these lenses as well.

Camera Raw 5.6 also provides a a fix for an issue affecting PowerPC customers using the final Camera Raw 5.5 and DNG Converter 5.5 updates on the Mac. The issue, introduced in the demosaic change to address sensors with unequal green response, has the potential to create artifacts in highlight areas when processing raw files from Sony, Olympus, Panasonic and various medium format digital camera backs.

Lots of Windows & Mac talk
There’s an apparent uprising to the fact there is no Mac version to the software! Planet5D says they have a 50/50 split between Windows and Mac users visiting their site. So here are my stats.

Canon Rumors Operating System Split (July 1, 2009 – July 31, 2009)
Windows 66.64%
MacOS 31.38%
Linux 1.78%
The Rest 0.2%

The maker of the software has done so for free and made it available to the world. I can understand time constraints with other things in life. Perhaps someone can contact the maker of the software and bring the world a Mac version!

A Most Useful Utility (For Windows Only)
This utility will find your shutter actuation if own a DIGIC III or IV EOS camera. It will NOT read the actuation of any 1D/1Ds series camera.

Vista 64 .CR2 Thumbnails

Didn’t know it, but it exists
Thanks to the folks at Ardfry Imaging, I was able to test out their .CR2 thumbnailer for Windows Vista 64bit. Like a lot of people, I was waiting for Canon to come up with the software. That doesn’t appear to be coming anytime soon!

Review
There’s isn’t much to say other than how easy it was to install and set up. The software works like a charm.

The coolest thing is it thumbnails my .CR2 files faster than Windows thumbnails jpgs. I can’t complain about that.

The software is available for .CR2, .DNG and .NEF for the 64 bit environment as well.
