Great shot that says a lot about the development of fighter aircraft.  I can't believe it's almost 40 years since the F-16 first flew.

I like this entire thread.  A lot.

Jim
I'd probably do better to invest more time and less money.

Went to an airshow and they had P-51 on display that was getting overhauled. Just in case your curious Champion spark plugs.  :)

Alan, all your shots are fantastic, even the fisheye B-29 shots.  Bravo!

The others who posted had great images too, well done!

I love the engine sound of those big warbirds, whether radials or the very distinctive sound of those huge V-12s.  Even when they fly low and loud overhead they're far more pleasant than a jet.
Way back, when I was still in my 20s, I wangled a ride in a 2nd-seat equipped P51 with an aerobatic pilot.
What an experience!  I held my lunch until we landed but I was as green as the camou' paint on that old plane!  That was 45 minutes I'll never forget.
I'd still like to find a ride in a Corsair and a P47.

Very awesome!  I've never flown in an aerobatic plane, or skydived...or even bungee jumped.  I'd like to do the first...and would do the other two to impress a female or something, haha...but the need has not presented itself!

I agree the radial engines have a very pleasing rumble to them.  The airshows I've been to in the past featured a Corsair and P-51 (it flew formation with a P-38 and an A-10 at the time...that was before digital photography).  Both prop planes seemed too quiet by comparison...but I have heard very loud warbirds before also.  The loudest part seemed to be the propeller, as it flew over on takeoff.

CAC Mustang shots from the weekend's 100 years of Military Aviation at Pt Cook.  CAC Mustangs were the Aussie built version of the P-51D.

Impressive and interesting, I didn't know Aussie's built P-51's...gotta love it!

Did you know later post war versions of the ME-109 used the Merlin engine?  I wonder what the Germans thought of that?  haha.  There's a reason they called it that, because it was "magic"!

Good place to plug the Chino CA. airshow that usually takes place the first weekend in May.  Emphasis on this
show is usually piston powered warbirds with an occasional nod to jets (before Obama cut demonstration funds from the air force and national guard).  great weekend for anyone interested in the old birds.
