Tamron introduces 24-70mm f/2.8 with IS
« on: February 06, 2012, 05:55:27 AM »
Apparently Tamron has developed a new 24-70mm f/2.8 lens with IS: http://www.tamron.eu/uk/news/read/data/tamron-develops-full-size-high-speed-standard-zoom-with-built-in-image-stabilization-sp-24-70m.html

I wonder how Canon will respond. An update of the current 24-70mm, with IS would be most welcome.

Hopefully this will shame Canon into matching their offering.  There is however always the potential of a tradeoff between quality and image stabilization, not only because of the additional elements, but also because of the risk of decentering (this is afterall, what IS does).  It's not that these issues are insurmountable in a fast zoom, the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II is a good example that it can be done, but as this lens shows there is a monetary price to be paid.  Still, Canon 'L' lenses are supposed to be the best...

I am pleased about this announcement. Even though I have not had many Tamron lenses, the ones I had did not make me regret, you get a bit more than what you pay for  ;D

I have the Sigma 24-70 HSM. It's okay, but I felt the need to get the 24-70L.  I'm now tempted by the Tamron  but want killer quality.

Now that we see the Canon 24-70 II, the Tamron 24-70 and the Sigma, I really would like a comparison review to see which one has the best quality. Looking at the graphs of the Canon 24-70 II, it may be tough to beat

Alas, the new Canon 24-70 non-IS comes with a $1,000+ price bump. True, they will be making a great lens even greater, but Canon missed the boat by not having an IS version of this lens.

This Tamron is looking very, very tempting...

If the Tamron can autofocus worth a flip I'll probably buy it. No way I pay $2300 for a 24-70 when no camera body comes with it!

I dont know why everyone still harps on about IS

I do not even think its necessary these days, the 5d mk II has good higher iso & no doubt
the 1dx and the upcoming mk III will exceed the previous versions

in any case, looking forward to this lens as on a budget. my guess is around 1600 at launch

If it is anything like the Tamron SP AF 28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) lens, I'll be selling my Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L (first version) real quick and buying this new little tamron beauty. The only reason I sold my Tamron 28-75mm is because I needed more wide-angle. But the sharpness of the Tamron was better than my current Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L lens, even wide open, and contrast was not bad too.

Can't wait for the first MTF charts en real life shots.

Not everyone shoots on a 5DII or 1DX...

the MTF charts would be really interesting to look at... if its sharper than the original L, its a definite lens to consider..

I'm just hoping Tamron don't see the $2399 Canon 24-70 and decide "Ooh, we can sell our lens $1899 instead of $1099" (or something like that.) Note that the Tamron 24-70 was announced before the Canon lens and that they didn't announce a price with it.

Has anyone seen a availability date?  Then I am guessing it would take 30 days for a few reliable reviews to surface.  The price of the Canon 24-70mm II and omission of IS has me interested in the Tamron offering.
