Title: Post Your Best Hi-ISO/Low Light 5DIII Shots!
Post by: killswitch on October 16, 2012, 01:19:51 AM
I was trying to find samples of high-iso/low light shots taken with a 5DIII but they are all spread around the net, and I thought it'be useful for folks if they could find some great sample shots taken under low light conditions under one thread. If possible please post basic exif data (ISO, aperture value, and shutter speed) along with the photos. If the thread seems redundant I guess the moderators can close it if needed.

Wow, wonderful shots Tammy! Watching this from an iPad and it looks fantastic, I can't wait to get my hands on the 5DIII and try out its high iso performance. Damn, loving the dynamic range especially on the first two shots.  :D

it's a great camera! you'll love it.. i feel it is worth every cent.. it not only enables me to do more of the things that i would like to do but also just makes shooting feel like/even more like a joy!

The 5DIII pretty much makes 3200 classified as "normal" for ISO range  :D
Man, if I can push for that camera then the jump from T1i to that is going to be amazing,
800 is already so noisy, and the loss of all the DR at anything higher indoors~

Nice shots Tammy ;D. It's always good to see real-world examples rather than arbitrary tests. Is that last one of ISO 25,600, F4, 1/8000s just a typo or was it really quite bright and you were having a play around with the ISOs?

I haven't actually done much low-light from mine yet (mostly day / flash) but following was a snap at a restaurant not long after I got it, ISO 10000 (had it set for auto-ISO in manual), 50mm, f/2.8, 1/125. Obviously not great overall but we were in a dark corner with all the light sources pretty much all coming from behind, front light is only reflections from a wall. Just thought I'd leave the lights in place rather than crop so you can see the general situation.

Great shots Tammy and PeterJ!

Q for both of you:  Lens used in those shots?  Tammy, my guess is the 24mm L.  PeterJ, my guess is either the 24-70L or one of the 50 primes.  What is your opinion of the AF performance at those light levels and were you using center point only or something else?

Tammy:  Ditto on PeterJ's Q about the last B/W shot, I would also like more of your thoughts on it.  It's well done considering the available light challenges.  All the other shots are nice and are good examples of what I am hoping to get from the 5DIII since most of my use is low light like that.

PeterJ:  I realize that you 'weren't really trying' with that shot but none the less, it's a stunning photo.  I'm guessing that is your family and I can't stop looking at them.  Absolutely beautiful.  The woman's facial shape, smooth complexion and captivating eyes are hard to ignore!  She looks very happy in that picture.  Then there is the reason it was posted... great DNR, handling of the backlight and shadows.  All in all, a picture to envy for many reasons both technical and emotional.

for most normal print jobs the 5diii is useable to ISO 12K or so, 25K in a pinch.  If you are printing very large then maybe scale back to 3200-6400 max.  For the web, IMHO, you can probably push it a stop beyond 25,600 depending on the use.

I just shot a number of night shots and many were at 12k8.

Thanks Rusty :) . Mine was taken with a 50/1.4, it handles low light focus really well even at outer points. I do have a 24-70L (Mk 1) and although good I really like he 50, it's always my preferred lens in that range unless I really need to zoom.

Thank you, both :)

The last black and white shot was in fact shot at 1/8000s.. at night! =)

It actually was not that bright, just an average acceptably lit pizzeria. But it's amazing what shutter speeds you can get at ISO 25,600 and fast glass! The light from the neon signs also affected metering. I shot it at ISO 25,600 strictly for creative purposes: to get natural in-camera gritty grain feel/look.. it was the theme for an available light photography school class that night and i was THRILLED to get out and shoot high ISO with my new 5D3 high ISO.. i knew that the noise was very fine and film-like and was looking forward to the photos i would get.. it was amazing to think that i generally HAD to set such a high ISO to get that noise when of course many of my fellow classmates were setting their cameras to max ISO's of 3200 etc or some with earlier Rebels to 1600.. how truly far technology has come in just a few years! we are blessed!

Great shots Tammy and PeterJ!

All of the shots except the escalator one were with the 24L II. The escalator one is one of my first shots with the 24-70L II.

The AF on the Mark III is going to be quite a step up from whatever you're currently using. Of course, it also depends on what lenses you are pairing it with. But, in general, low light available light shooting is my favorite and the Mark III is a very capable camera that, for me, makes it easier for me to take the shots i want without any hassle or limitations. Equipped with 41 cross-type F4 sensitive AF sensors, what AF point i choose to use depends on what aperture and depth of field i need/want. i have the camera set to single point AF selection and have the peace of mind and confidence to stray off and select an AF point at the edges in landscape mode or to select the one over the eye in vertical portrait mode and still know i'm going to get the shot! If at F2.8 or wider then I tend to use the center point or other double cross types.. but this all helps you get better or more accurate framed shots than using the center point and recompose method that you/many feel they HAVE to with a rebel/5D2 etc because many of their AF points other than the center are not accurate in lower light situations. So for low light autofocus flexibility/functionality, there just isn't much better design out there right now than Canon's current one in the 5D3 and 1DX!

How di you get the couple (last shot) to remain still for the long exp?

was it a composite?

What were you settings for the milky Way rendering?

Thanks.  The couple (actually my little brother and my mom;) just sat still for 30 seconds, not that long, and not super sharp is you blew it up really big (would have been better to do a composite, but we were kinda drunk and it was late).

The milky way shot was 30 seconds, 14mm L II at f2.8, 6400ISO I believe.

I use Lightroom and apart from setting colour balance and tweaking the exposure up a bit (I didn't think to use AE lock so was a bit under-exposed) just slid across the NR slider until I thought it looked OK. So really didn't put much effort in, I'm not really that good at PP and on my "to do list" is getting a bit better at it.

This image was taken at around 19:30 on Monday at a wet, windy and not that well lit Newquay station in Cornwall.   It's not exactly the final shot I was hoping for when I set out earlier in the day, in rather better weather, to travel to all five terminal stations on the Cornish rail network, but it does illustrate the high ISO capabilities of the 5D3.

No really fast motion apparent, why would you use such an extreme shutter speed?  I think you could have easily gotten away with 1/250, 1/125 or even 1/60 and had a much crisper image.  Also the focus seems a bit off, but that just might be due to the noise reduction...

50mm f1.2, ISO 2000, 1/320.
This was ambient light in a dim room just after the sun went down.  I needed a fast shutter speed because the little guy was moving around pretty fast.

Hi,

These twe shots were made at the besalèn of the Solonese gamelan maker Pak Tentrem. (A besalèn (Javanese) is a smithy, perapèn in Indonesian.)
The round object in the center is a kempul, i.e. a small (about 50 cm) hanging gong, with a boss in the center. Here you see how the boss is being hammered out, the last phase before the kempul is thrown in cooling water, the slug scraped off and polished.
In the back one can see another fire in which a wilah demung is being produced, heated and hammered alternatively. A wilah is a (bronze or iron) key of a metallophone with usually six or seven keys. The demung is a large and low-tumed metallophone.

I am not annoyed by the black AF points, if I can't see the AF point, it would be too dark for the camera to focus anyway...

There was a blizzard the other night, and even though I was tired from a night out on the town, the snow in the lights was so pretty that I had to walk around the block.  I wanted to try and get a very shallow DOF and have the snow be my in-focus subject.

Nice idea. I've thought of trying to photograph snow before, but we don't get it that often to have the chance.
