Title: Moonbow!
Post by: acoll123 on October 30, 2012, 07:31:22 AM
No Photoshop here - I was just starting my morning run and noticed this. I quickly ran back inside and grabbed my camera. I have heard about them but never noticed one this spectacular!

I am starting to think the green streak is a meteorite - I think I am going to play the lottery today.

Awesome, congrats on the capture.  I agree with the possible meteorite.

In the business, we call those stars.  ;-)

I don't think so - the white spots are stars. I will take a closer look tonight to make sure - didn't have a lot of time with it this morning.

It rather looks like a landing Reptilian spaceship. It's even more rare than a meteorite, so bid double pot today. :D

Andy, lovely picture. What were your settings? I tried taking one 4 years back with my 300D and failed miserably :P

And I agree with marekjoz, definitely an alien ship   ;)

Cool moonbow!   The brightest 'star' actually may be Jupiter! The fainter point to the lower left of it should be Aldebaran.

Had a double moonbow here the other night, by the time I grabbed a camera it had swirled into a star/cog shape.

Is it on Cape Canaveral, FL? :)

Thanks  - I used my 5D Mark III    TS-E 17 mm    f/4.0    5 sec    400 ISO for the one with the meteorite the other was the same except ISO 800.

Beautiful!

According to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonbow), it's not really a moonbow, but a halo around the moon produced by ice crystals in cirrus clouds. I still think it's beautiful, screw you Wikipedia! :P

I am not sure about the settings Andy used, and I agree that it is a very cool picture, as is Crashers shot. When I shoot the moon I use spot metering (on clear nights), AV and last friday for this shot it was F11, which was the lowest combination I could get with the teleconverter :)

5D II, 800 F5.6L + 2x III teleconverter, @F11, ISO 100, Spot Metering, AV Mode, One Shot. Plus a very sturdy tripod and a Gimbal? head. 10 second delay (which with the speed of the earth made me put the focus point on the middle on the far right side, and by the time the shot was taken, it had passed the middle of the moon). It was also a bit windy, so my friend and I had to cover/shelter the lens from that additional shake. In addition three hours in minus three degrees celsius (waiting for the clouds to go away :)

Nice shot.

I took this shot when I lived in Texas (many moons ago). It was shot with a Hasselblad using 100ISO kodak  tungsten slide film. 15 min exposure. The moon is behind the tree and moved quite a bit - but I like the effect.

I see a lot of digital photos these days taken at night with black skies. A camera set to tungsten WB gives a much better blue.

This on spaceweather.com today...  http://www.spaceweather.com/images2012/31oct12/hathaway.jpg (http://www.spaceweather.com/images2012/31oct12/hathaway.jpg)

Given the same clouds/ice crystals one could have all that with the moon, a shot I'm kinda dying to get lol.

If you get some ground fog at night with a low moon look for these too...  http://www.extremeinstability.com/stockx/optics/o-f8475.jpg (http://www.extremeinstability.com/stockx/optics/o-f8475.jpg)  Lunar fogbow.

I think a Lunar or Moonbow is more of just a rainbow from moonlight, which I've still not gotten and is really hard in some regions.  Martin McKenna has gotten a lot of them now.  http://www.nightskyhunter.com/Rainbow%20&%20Moonbow%20Gallery.html (http://www.nightskyhunter.com/Rainbow%20&%20Moonbow%20Gallery.html)

Lovely! It looks like the tree is a puppeteer!  :)
