Title: Autumn/Fall Color Photos on 5D Mark III - Any Lens
Post by: revup67 on November 24, 2012, 12:21:09 PM
Didn't see any recent threads on this except for a 24-70 - thought to give this topic a whirl before the season is over

Here's a few to get started:

Beautiful fall photos. I see they were taken in NJ. What lenses did you use?

Christian nice work on "Sleeping Giant State Park, CT (EF50/1.4)" - which reminds me on how much more I should use that 50 1.4.   I caught (not literally) the leaves in the whirl wind.  Was this done in post process (the tunnel effect) or did you swivel the camera on a tripod head ?

Thanks!  It was handheld at 1/30 sec.

Btw, thank you!  Your photos convinced me to order the 16-35II.  Your photos are so clean and sharp.  I've been reluctant to get it because the photos I've seen on flickr have such awful vignetting.

Christian..cool..glad you liked the lens and my UWA posts although some were with the 24-105 L.  I have had no issues with the vignetting (16-35) even with an 82 mm filter such as the B&W ND or the Marumi Polarizer.  I did run Focal on the lens re:  the sharpness so that also may have helped as there was some adjusting on the AFMA.  I also use the RAW format so in DPP on that last tab be sure and select the check box to adjust for distortion.  I don't sharpen much on the landscape shots so that are somewhat flat in that sense.

Can you offer more insight on how you obtain that complete circle view..saw your post on hand held at 1/30 - did you just sway your wrists a full 360 and getting those two leafs in the center without blur was excellent.

Here's another foliage shot..this is about a block from Bruce Springsteen's home and also Bon Jovi's drummer

Thanks for the info,  I might check out that Focal.  I really need to learn to AFMA now that I have the 5DIII, which I didn't have on the 60D. I'm still waiting for B&H to ship my 16-35, crossing my fingers that it would be a good copy like yours.

Your whole upper body would turn since you're going to be looking through the camera.   I pre-focused and took lots of shots before I got the composition I like.  This also works better during mid-day and you'll have plenty of time since it's awful to shoot anything else. lol

Dylan..thanks for the kind words. I now realize it is so easy to over do it on HDR.  I showed my brother about 3 weeks ago HDR for the 1st time and anything and everything that Photomatix produced he thought was cool.. it's grossly and overly abused without the proper finesse.  Gotta work those sliders :)..yep I am in the Mission Viejo area..maybe I'll bump into ya sometime

Just realized we're all SoCal, though I'm further south.  Anyway, I love the composition and colors of this one.  Just curious about that teal spot in the middle, is that from the sky, post-processing or lens hotspot?

Dylan I used DPP, Photomatix, Photoshop CS 5 and ACDSee Pro 5.  Once in awhile Lightroom 4.1 though not crazy about having to EXPORT everything and having to import new pics and changes to photos whereas ACDSee if you add a new pic, new folder, new whatever the photo manager picks it up immediately.  Used to be $229 USD they are running a promo at 69.99 presently.

Christian - yes good call on the teal in the center..looks more pronounced here (web) then viewing locally though. That was probably my fault.  I just redid the HDR process and found the culprit - it's called "Natural" in Lighting Adjustments in Photomatix.  As soon as I clicked this effect the Teal center came in to view.  Perhaps time for a redo.  Maybe we 3 can start a local Canon club or help each other find new locales for photo shoots..I know this area quite well with respect to nature and hiking trails but always looking for new places to shoot.

Update:  -just redid the photo and uploaded..see if this looks any better though I notice more glow around the tree...uggh.  Slight vignetting in upper left corner I know perhaps HDR did this don't notice on original single image.

PS - i just sent a message to you both (PM) - check messages..cheers

The first shot is awesome

you should give LR enfuse a go it runs inside LR and is awesome, no halos at all, clean images no added fuzziness, no wierd colour shifts then you can just use all the LR edits straight away on the output HDR image
and NO added noise!
it produces a very natural base image which you can dial in all the tweaks you like nice and easy within Light room

here is a sample 5 shot bracket with 1EV gap each shot 1Dmk3 24-105 @47mm f8 and handheld

Wicki..I will try that and I am assuming you are referring to loading the JPG (the HDR pic) into LR then attempting the prescribed formula above.  I will admit the sky does look quite good...nice work.  I am still reluctantly trotting away with LR but practice can make perfect.  Thanks !

Nope it processes raw files directly and fast then automatically brings a tif back into lr for you to work on
Once you get a workflow sorted with lr using anything else feels clunky and slow

The new edit looks good too!  I use photoshop for tone mapping because i like to use the brush

cool tire and bike pic.  You using Fusion still ?

Thanks! I use little bit of everything, fusion, hdr, and blending.  Really depends on the particular challenges of the shot.

Thanks! Yes, it did need post to get rid of the atmospheric haze. The distant part of the scene looks pretty much a total wash out in the raw capture. It's surprising at times on how much can be pulled out of the raw file.
