Title: Patent: Canon EF 14 f/2.8 with Fluorite
Post by: Canon Rumors on February 25, 2013, 06:57:25 AM

Patent for wide angle fluorite concepts

Canon has filed patent for a wide angle fluorite concept. Such a patent could be part of a new ultra-wide zoom lens, perhaps a 14-24 or a replacement to the 16-35. Egami also thinks it’s possible this patent could be for the EF-M mount. It’s an interesting read, even when Google translated. Read the full patent here.

Considering the already insane price of the 14mm 2.8 II, I fear the worst if a III version were to be launched

Let's hope it's fluorite.  Flourite sounds like a bread ingredient

Well spotted.

"Flourite" is a branded product. I may hasten to add that it has nothing to do with cameras / lenses -

"Flourite® is a specially fracted, stable porous clay gravel for the natural planted aquarium"

Uber sharp 14-24L or 16-35L III.
Bring it on.

Insane indeed.

$2400 14mm f/2.8 L
VS
$370 Samyang 14mm

And many tests has proven that the Sammy is equaly as good as the 14L.. Except for the lack of AF, but who cares?  :P

Canon, please stop being insane.

This is the 2nd time that a f/2.8-4.0 wide angle zoom has been mentioned.

This is a patent for an EF-S or EF-M  17-35mm f/2.8-f/4.0 lens

And two 14mm f/2.8 lenses.

The current 14mm f/2.8 I and II is a joke especially with the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 out there which in my experience owning all 3 the Samyang is the winner, and you barley need to focus on such a wide lens anyways.

The 14-24mm f/2.8 is an absolute joke especially compared to the 14-24mm f/2.8 from nikon or if you are willing to sacrifice fov the 17mm TS-E is so much better. I would pick any of those lenses before I went with Canon's one.

Anyways this patent also brings up an interesting idea, a 14-30mm f/2.8-f/4.0 lens. That's something I could get behind.

Whether a new 14mm prime or 14-24, it won't be that easy for Canon.

mustafa

you made me laugh out loud... that is so funny
I would EAT some flouite for an improved (as in PERFECT) 14MM lens

yes ...love that flourite...
..........

I have the 16-35 II, 14L II (ready for some improvement again ...as the 14L III)

how did I get so hooked on really  ' W  I  D   E '?

we are so spoiled....
and I love it
............

humor.... means ....thinking at a higher level
thanks again

TOM

P.S.
Samyang SEEMS like a good option for ... 4 times...ok ok....5 times... wait....6 times less $$ .........ha...
it has - I hear -  a bit more distortion, but should be considered...

I DO love my 14L II.. and DEMAND autofocus... in how I use it

but I would agree here that Samyang 14mm is a possible option....

can we please get Canon's head out of the clouds.......soon
we want the products but we cant all drive TestaRosas and Antique Aston Martins ...

A joke? How can this be when Canon does not even have a 14-24 f/2.8 lens to begin with?

Are you from the future commenting about a lens not released by Canon as on date? If yes, please let us know on what date the production model of the 200-400 was released ... I'm tired of waiting :P

So why fool around with a me too lens?

As Sigma already makes a 12-24 zoom (I owned a ver1) it seems to me that Canon could do Nikon one better and make  a 12-24 f4.
My Sigma was sharp in the center at f8 and smaller and sharp-ish at the extreme edges only at f13. I have heard reports that the ver2 is much better.

If Canon did this they would Me_Me_Me Nikon in the UWA zoom range and if we have any justice it would be as sharp as the new 24-70II.

If Kryptonite comes from the planet Krypton, Does that mean fluorite come from the planet Fluoron? This is important stuff to me - being the superhero that I am...

Sigma 12-24 is S**T in the corners! No point in getting the extra 2mm focal length when it is so difficult to construct a 12mm lens, and when corner performance is as bad as it is on the Sigma, completely useless!. Also before Canon tryes to make a 12mm lens they need to prove they can compete with the rest on 14mm!!  And forget about f/4, we need f/2.8 just like the Nikon and the Samyang. Canon need to release a 14-24 2.8 lens, no point in making a new 14mm alone, when Nikons 14-24 is sharper and optically superior @14mm to Canons prime 14mm lens. Also you can not use filters on Canons 14mm, so it basically has no advantage what-so-ever over the Nikon 14-24! I have both the Samyang 14mm and the Nikon 14-24, which I am using on my 1DX/5d3/5D2, and I have been using the Canon 14mm 2.8 v2 a lot, so I know Canon need to get a grip!

"Flourite® is a specially fracted, stable porous clay gravel for the natural planted aquarium"

So does that mean it is an underwater lens?
