Well, of course, just as soon as I drop $2000+ on a new 70-200 2.8 IS II...  So much for the previous rumor that there wouldn't anymore rebates until next spring >:(

Next Spring??  I've never seen that Rumor!

Canon has had almost continuous rebates for the last year.  Some involve only a few items and some cover a lot of items.  As long as the world economy is poor, Canon and Nikon will keep having rebates in order to keep the production lines going.  Its cheaper that way.  Shutting down a factory and restarting it later is incredibally expensive, while rebates just result in a lower profit margin, but its still profit.

Any knowledge out there whether this will affect prices in Europe, too?
(I am expecting to purchase a 6D or 5DmkIII very soon - actually planned for tomorrow, but now I may reconsider).

Aren't the "rebates" really just the actual prices so when they say "rebate" you feel all warm and fuzzy inside (and you can justify the purchase) that you are saving $200 on that 3k purchase?

Is there a way to return it and get your money back in case there are rebates for it next week?

I intended to buy the new 24-70 2.8 L II today but my local Canon dealer told me to wait until May 1st (or 2nd ad May 1st is a public holiday here). He said that I'd save 300 Euros as Canon would start a cashback action here in Germany.

So, if you are intending to buy that zoom and if you can wait a little bit longer you might save some money.

I went home with the new Siggy 35mm 1.4 Art line instead and will buy the zoom in May  :D

that would mean around 2500 euro for the 5D MK3.
i don´t think that will happen. but of course it would be nice.

Keep in mind that the Yes is now nearly 100 Yen to 1 USD from below 80 several months ago.

Increase margin and gives Canon room to fund rebates.

For those of us who have time to find the deals and wait, yes.  But many people need to buy NOW so for them rebates are less of opportunity.

Don't think I've ever seen rebates on the Super-Teles.  Supply is somewhat limited and demand still seems to be high for the MK II versions.  Hope Canon starts a new trend and includes the 500 F4 MK II in the rebates.  Then I can hustle and figure out a way to fund one!

I'd like to replace my 24-105L with primes.  This will be along term project but maybe I can start this week.  Don't even know what the plan is but the keyword is sharp.  Deciding between the 100 2.8L macro and the 135 f2L on the long end.  I have a 50mm 1.8 (first generation) that I am using more and more so I will sit tight until they refresh the 50mm lenses.  Yup,  I want rebates on sharp primes

Yes, but sometimes dealers will sweeten the pot because they know that buyers have been waiting for the starting gun and the start of rebates is what drives people to their computers.  So maybe we get an additional 5% credit to use on our next purchase ($150) which is pretty appealing.  Or maybe they throw in a software package... or maybe they are willing to do that and price match another deal... so that rebate on top of your other savings or freebies just started to add up.

They have had rebated on the 100 and 135 before... but I think it was only around $100... so the best value is still getting those refurbished from Canon directly.

I'm seriously considering a 5d mkiii... I already own a 24-105, but if I can save some cash and get the kit and sell the lens for around $800... I'm game.  I've done it before... and I'm sure I can do it again.

My buy it now, don't blind price for the body is $2500.  So that means $3300 for the kit.

Per Canon price watch, the best body price is around $2950... so I really doubt they are going to offer a $450 rebate on the body.  :(

The kit is $3600... so after an $800 sale, I'm looking at $2800.  I think it is more reasonable to believe they will offer a $300 rebate on the kit... but unlikely.  I guess I will just have to keep waiting.

I am hoping for a few lenses to get some significant rebates:

EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM
EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM
EF 135mm f/2L USM

Quote
The 200mm f/2L IS has had a $500 rebate in the past.

Now that is another deal I could get behind.  Also, if the TS-E 90mm f/2.8 gets an end-of-life discount, I could see that one as well. So many lenses, so few resources...

yes, the cashback-action in germany could come true in may, cause in UK it is almost active since 07.03.13 until 31.05.2013. The cashback for the new 24-70 II is really 300,-€  (terms and conditions here: http://www.canon.co.uk/Images/A4UKIRE_terms%26conditions_tcm14-1036724.pdf (http://www.canon.co.uk/Images/A4UKIRE_terms%26conditions_tcm14-1036724.pdf) )
And the cashback for the 5d3 is 200,-€.

I thought about buying a 5d3 in April, but with your information I will wait until may - perhaps I`ll be a lucky guy and get the gear a little bit cheaper than now.  ;D

We will see

thank you for the information  :)

greetings from germany

So does anyone know if dealers honor the actual rebates or is this only from Canon direct? The 6D + 24-105 lens package has a $200 rebate bringing it down to $2399. But it's already $2399 from B+H and Amazon. Will they still give the $200 off? Just not super clear how it works. And this is the camera that I have been thinking of upgrading to.

Thanks.

No, you won't get the rebate on top of the current discount prices.  They'll raise the price then apply the rebate, maybe prices will be $50 less than current on higher end items, maybe no change after the rebate.

e.g. the 70-200 II has been on rebate for the last year pretty much

Wow those are some terrible prices from the Sammy's ad. $3899 for 5D MkIII with kit is laughable considering it was selling for $3449 everywhere in March. Similarly, $2199 for the 70-200 when Adorama is selling for $1949 this very moment. Hopefully B&H will have some prices tomorrow that resemble something like actual rebates.

What about on the multi-lens deals?  The reason I ask is that I bought a 6D + 24-105 kit and I'm still within the return period.  Looking at these, I could have gotten the 70-300mm IS USM basically for free.  It would suck to have to return the kit to get the free 70-300, but I can't ignore it...

in fairness,  the mkii was a big-time improvement over the 5dc.   the mkiii fixes all if not most of the problems with the mkii,  but in regards to studio and portraiture,  the mkii  will still be more than sufficient.   wedding and sport photography is really where the market  is.   I'm know people will disagree,  but the mkii  was a formidable camera.

in the past,  dealers were required to return their pricing to minimum advertised price to be eligible for the rebate to be applicable,  so you did see the price go up by a hundred and then drop by two hundred.   but last year canon forced authorized retailers to go to minimum advertised pricing which I don't think lasted long,  but I could be wrong about that.

I forget if it was adorama or b&h,  but they had their sale pricing at midnight and then the rebate kicked in so you could double dip.   and then the following day their price went to minimum advertised price.  so look around for what you want and maybe you'll find a good deal.

Ive been tracking the price of the 400 5.6L on B&H over the last while. It has been dropping in price since Christmas and earlier in the week it was down to $1199. The lens is eligible for $120 rebate now and the B&H price has gone up to $1339. So in my mind the rebate is not passed on to the customer.

The lens is eligible for $120 rebate now and the B&H price has gone up to $1339. So in my mind the rebate is not passed on to the customer.

Call and negotiate.  It's minimum advertised price.  Throw out an offer of 1080 and see if they take it.  DONE!

What usually happens is the dealers know people are going to buy these items as soon as the rebates start so they mark them up, but after awhile they begin to drop again and after a few weeks of rebates they end up lower than before the rebates started. Say for example the 24-70 is now about $2049. The 200 dollar rebate might end up bring it down to between $1949 to $1999. I expect it to be that price in a month or so. In December with the last rebates. I managed to pick up a new 70-200 II 2.8l for about $1875 counting a 10% off amazon christmas coupon and 1% back on my visa card. Also no tax in my state :) You just have to wait it out.

That 6D kit (with the 70-300f4-5.6 IS USM), wow, it's like they're throwing one of their best lenses at you for free.

Edit: For clarities sake I think I should change this to reflect that I though it was the "L" lens they were giving away.

While the L version of that lens ranks among their top lenses, the non-L version included in the kit could hardly be considered "one of their best".  At 300mm, it's about as sharp as a bowl of pudding.  :P

Thanks for catching that.

I'll go to the corner now and hang my head in shame (I can't believe I missed the lack of an "L", the most important designation in Canon's naming scheme).

B&H has now updated the prices on many of the Canon products. Unfortunately they are much higher than Adorama's, and some are even higher than the rebate that occurred in March.

70-200mm f/2.8 IS II: $2099
24-70mm f/2.8 II: $2049
5D Mark III: $3099

Very disappointing round of rebates at these price points.

It's too bad you can't use the rebates to any advertised price from an authorized dealer. Then, $300 discounts would mean something...  Why put out these 'Rebates' if you're not really saving? Just a waste of time and money...

BLAST!
I just checked B&H website and it's only 2199 now.  I gotta send it back and buy it again? #$**!!!

Just ask B&H for an adjustment or just to redo the paperwork.

They would much prefer skiping a return.

They've upped the price of the 24-105 kit on amazon to 2398, but it doesn't show the $200 instant.  It only shows the $300 on the 70-300.

...I sure hope so.  While it is most certainly preferable, it is also "old-school" (like me, regrettably, sigh...) and I am learning not to be so surprised at how the still-emerging "new-school" works...

$2398 on B & H for the 6D + 24-105 + 70-300.  So the question is, is the 70-300 worth $200?  I have plans to buy either the 70-200 F4 IS or 70-300L.  I might just do this deal and re-sell the 70-300 non L.  It'll depend on how Amazon handles it, since I bought the kit for $2329 a week ago.

I've had the 70-300 IS for several years now and it has really good iq on the 50- and 7D for a non-L lens.  I'll have to try it on the 6D and post...

OK...so the Canon rebate advertisement posted for this discussion lists the 135mm f/2L for $989 with rebate, so why:
Does B&H Photo not even list the lens on their website???
Amazon lists the lens @  $1131.00 ???
..and pretty much everyone but J&R who has the lens lists it for over $1100 ???
That price is higher than Canon's pre-rebate price.
kind of odd, no?
I must be missing something here. HELP! LOL!

This is my question too. Is that 70-300 worth picking up for $200? For all 3, the camera plus the 2 lenses, it's the same price that the camera +24-105 was. So almost like getting a free lens. ? But I'd rather just save the $200 if it's a crappy lens and/or one I can't resell for more than I got it for. Any thoughts?

Well The 70-300 isn't an L lens...(I guess you need to read some reviews to get an idea of the quality...I'm not familiar with the lens....but you will be using it on a current FF camera..so whatever is not good will really show), but hey it's selling at B&H for well over $400 so you could certainly get more than your money back by selling it if you do not like it!...

Aren't the "rebates" really just the actual prices so when they say "rebate" you feel all warm and fuzzy inside (and you can justify the purchase) that you are saving $200 on that 3k purchase?
I expect prices to go up.  They have in the past.  Canon requires sellers to give the rebate based on MSRP, which may well be a higher price than the item was selling for before the rebate started.

Well this is fracking stupid.  These rebates caused the 6D kit price on Amazon to actually go UP by $70 in the U.S!

The Best Buy website is at $2199, but as mentioned, they do charge tax, even for online only sales.  That's still $2330, which is cheaper than most other places now that the rebate has raised prices.

Sweet!  I almost bought the 24-70 2.8L II for $2049 during the last rebate period. Glad I waited.  Just snagged it for $1929 using the Adorama Coupon Code.  I actually prefer to do business with B&H (a couple of unsatisfactory customer service incidents at Adorama), but for that savings, I'd do business with the devil himself :)

You can probably get between $300-$350 on CraigsList for the non-L 70-300 IS depending on your local market. You might get a bit more on FM or eBay if it's new and unopened. There are a lot of them for sale but if you're patient it'll get you at least $300. I can't speak to how good of a lens it is since I've never actually taken one out of the box. I'll stick with a 70-200 + extenders.

I was looking at getting 2 Canon bodies. A 60D and a 5D Mark III. I know the Mark III on most of the websites were $2900 and change in March. Start a new rebate and jack up the prices?
Is Canon trying to slow their sales? It's confusing...
Maybe I'll try to call one of the dealers on the phone to see if they'll swing a deal if I'm purchasing 2 bodies.
Has anyone ever been able to get a lower price doing a deal like that? Just curious...

I'm still confused with how Canon works. Purchasing a camera at a decent price is almost like working on Wall st. Sometimes the prices go up, and sometimes the prices go down. I called B and H to see if they would come down in price if I purchased 2 camera bodies. They wouldn't budge. I asked them if they would give me a competitive price if I showed them someone selling for less. I told them who it was. They still refused.
I can understand making a profit, but with how this last rebate worked... jacking up the prices before the rebate had me feeling like I got the rug yanked right out from under me. Something just feels a little weird about this. Ya know? ;)
I guess I need to wait some more or, go with that company with the much lower price. We'll see...
