Help a relative noob out? How can this significant a price cut be done without the retailer losing ample amounts of money? Or is it that they don't care?

The main question... Is there anything different between the ~1100 and ~800 lenses being sold on Amazon?

Might be a 'white box' version.  The 6D + 24-105L kit costs $500 more than the 6D body only.  Lots of retailers break apart those kits and sell the lens (which comes in a white box inside the kit) separately.

Ahhh. So that's what 'white box' means. I recently bought a 100mm macro from Amazon and wondered why the price had been dropped. It arrived in a white box as well. #brainsplode

I don't know of any Canon kit which included a 100mm macro lens.  But refurbished lenses also come in white boxes (they do say Canon on the outside, and the label says refurbished).  The kit lens white box is just a blank white box with no labeling.

I read a description by someone who bought the $749 version. I misunderstood what 'white box' meant. My macro came in a 'white box' but it had other words and logos printed on it. I didn't realize 'white box' meant that it is completely white and has no additional content - ex: instructions, etc.

A normal retail box, e.g. for the 100mm macro (non-L):

A 'white box' 24-105L:

It's likely a White Box version, as neuroanatomist pointed out.  The "white box" is simply a kit lens that came with another camera that the retailer decided to sell separately.  The lens is in a "white box" because it was shipped in a bigger retail box with the camera body.  Like anything else, just make sure the lens is new, unused, and has the appropriate USA warranty.

FYI, I purchased a new White Box 24-105 a couple years ago for $899, so this is a good deal, provided the caveats I mentioned are satisfied.  It looked just like the picture above.

seems like the ebay one is the proper whitebox OEM model with warranty. The amazon one seems to be just a lens chucked into any ole box, based ont he reviews...

Surprised at amazon... :o
